  1. larbgai, great tips- I actually took the test at 12:15, and I was also taking my GMATPrep tests around that time to simulate the test. I tried to simulate it as close to the actual test as I could. I really do need to calm down and remember that this only a test. And I've not been so bad about taking tests either! I appreciate your advice and see if I can get a better score :).
  2. Thanks everyone- I think I'll take Otorio's suggestion and take a week out to look over this. Any suggestions on where I could find some advanced Quant questions to practice with?
  3. actual- 570 (Q 35, V 34). I totally bombed out on my GMAT today! I'm very upset because I feel like I did everything right during my preparation. In fact, I didn't score this low in any of my practice tests so I'm very disappointed and confused on whether I should take the GMAT again. Btw, this is the 3rd time I took it. What I did different this time? - my preparation was much more solid. That is, I paid more attention to what I was getting wrong and why. - in verbal, I took the time to learn the various sentence correction errors. - all in all, my preparation was very disciplined, and in fact, my practice scores say a lot about my preparation. My prep scores: MGMAT 1-6 - 640-680. GMATPrep 1 - 690 GMATPrep 1 (repeat) - 730 GMATPrep 2 - 720 - taken exactly a week ago. Today: I thought I had a good start on the Quant section and felt confident that I had at least the first 5-8 questions correct. At about the 15th question is where I thought things might have fallen apart. But my score says otherwise. The verbal seemed okay- not too difficult. I had a few SC initially then a CR and then an RC. Please make some suggestions- should i take the GMAT again, or give up on the idea of B-school altogether?
  4. Ankost- great explanation. Thanks. I got down to n(n-1) and just didn't recognize them as consecutive integers! Doh! Appreciate the help :)
  5. Not sure if it is a formula. Just remember that SD gives you the distribution of all the scores from the mean. From that you know that SD is a constant.
  6. Gmatrookie1 - for exponents, the only time you can add the powers is when the bases are the same and you are multiplying. ie 2^4 x 2^3 = 2^(4+3). Even if the bases are the same, in this case the question is asking you to add all of the numbers. Therefore, the ans is iii). Hope this helps. The Manhattan GMAT math books are great for understanding the math fundamentals, such as these :).
  7. Ans = A = 74. The way I figured this is that if 58 is 2 SD away from the mean, and 98 is 3 SD away from the mean, that means in total there's 5 SD in between, and the difference is 40. Since SD is equal, 40/5 = 8. That is SD = 8. To check for accuracy, 98-24= 74; and 58+16=74. Therefore, mean = 74. Please let me know if my ans is correct. Thanks.
  8. Q If m and n are integers, is m odd? 1) n+m is odd 2) n+m=n^2 +5. Please be sure to explain you ans choice. How do you decipher something like statement 2? Appreciate your help. :hmm:
  9. vgs - how did you get x=12? The stem clearly states x is a prime. So x can't be 12 :). Just thought I'd point it out in case you missed that. :)
  10. Ans should be C: Remember, the stem does not specify if x is an integer or not, so you must remember to consider fractions. From stat 1) x^3(1-x^2) => x is a -ve integer, then 1-x^2 would yield a -ve and x^3 would be a negative, therefore, x cannot be a -ve integer. => x is a +ve integer, then 1-x^2 will be -ve, and x^3 would be a +ve, and x^3(1-x^2) would be => x could also be a -ve fraction. In this case, 1-x^2 would be +ve, and x^3 would be -ve, so then x^3(1-x^2) would be Therefore stat 1) alone is INSUFF as x could be a -ve fraction or a +ve integer. From stat 2) x^2-1 From both stats, you can confirm that x is a -ve fraction, and therefore x is negative. SUFF
  11. Ans is C: From stat 1) No info about y. From stat 2) y=(z-1)^2, when expanded, gives you y=z^2-2z+1. Insuff as no info about x. Both together, sub x=z^2 in stat 2) to get y-x= -2z+1. Multiply both sides by -1, and you get x-y=2z-1. Anything multiplied by 2 is even and -1 makes it odd. SUFF
  12. 800Bob- thank you for the great explanation. That was just what I was looking for!
  13. Please include explanation: Q) If x a) -x; b) -1; c) 1; d) x; e) sqrt(x) My confusion- how do you know if it should be -x or x as the ans? OA is
  14. My experience with the GMATPrep - your score is not entirely dependent on the # of questions you get right or wrong, but actually how many you get right up front. You can experiment with the GMATPrep (after you're done taking the tests) and see how your score changes if you get the first 5 to 10 questions wrong vs the much later in the test.
  15. IMO.. C & A. For the second Q, A seems to strengthen the argument by indicating that knitting needles are dangerous too. I feel that there is no info in the argument to support C.
