  1. Hi: I'm applying for a part-time mba program at UCLA. In one of the essays which asks about how events have shaped who you are today, is it okay to mention a lay-off experience in the 2003 economic tumble and how i survived and managed to find one immediately? Will it be looked as a negative as i had been laid off or a positive and strong experience that made me try harder than ever to find a job and remain in the US. If i had another compelling story to write, should i skip this. Please let me know.
  2. CR was always strong but I was struggling with timing in RCs and so i started to write down paragraph summaries(good to see if u got the essence of the paragraph) as i read and tried to increase my speed at it with practise. This may sound trivial but 'understanding the passage' is key. SC is a beast. I highly recommend the Manhattan SC guide. Once you read that do the OG11 SC and read the explanations for even the answers you get correct. Learn why the other choices are wrong. Hope this helps.
  3. Real GMAT was very comparable to the GMAT Prep tests, both in content and more on scoring. I must say Q had a few tough ones, defnly >3mts to solve. I think the Kaplan books might help with Quant. And i'd stick to OG for Verbal.
  4. Hi: Just wanted to share my recent(today) GMAT experience with this forum which has helped me immensely in my prep. My unofficial score is 730. But i'm bummed that i got 49 in Q, when on most practice tests i have seen 50/51. This probably stopped me from a likely dream score of 750. Hopefully this is good enough for the schools i'll be applying to. Actual GMAT test: AWA pretty straighforward topics. Nothing unusual - infact one of them i had already seen before and had run it through in my head. Q - was reasonable. There were some pretty easy questions and some moderately tough ones in the middle. Lots of geometry(my strength)and lots of inequalities(my weakness)...but i thought i cracked them. I think i might have gotten something in the first 10 wrong. V - seemed easier than my prior practise tests. 3 RC passages were fairly short. SC was also straightforward. Some CRs i had a tough time deciding between 2 choices. Guessed the last one as time was running out. Practice tests: Kaplan 1 -580 GMAT prep 1 -680 Kaplan 2 - 650 PR free test -650 MGMAT free online -710 Old Powerprep 1 & 2 -760 & 780 (had lots of repeats from OG) GMAT prep 2 -720 GMAT prep 1(reinstalled) - 770 (had repeats) So my score is once again in line with GMAT Prep scores. Prep Material: OG11, Kaplan 2006 edition w/ CD OG11 Verbal supplement Manhattan SC (2003 edition) TM forum discussions Prep time was spread over 2 months, but with deliverable at work & personal commitments you can say i did justice to only one month of focused practise. Typically 1.5-2 hours 3 days a week and 4-5 hours once in the weekend. Since maths was fairly strong, i focused on verbal. Luckily that paid of, as i usually got 33-34 initially and was able to pull it up to 40+. Also, i also struggled with timing intially, but it came w/ practise & pacing questions. Thanks to this wonderful forum and the amazing people who contribute here. The tips & advise here were immensely useful.
  5. I think ans is B. Area= 1/2.base.height=25 1) is insufficient to find the 3 sides to find perimeter. 2) Says it's an right isosceles, hence sides are a,a,a.sqrt(2) Now, Area=1/2a^2=25 from which we can determine a=5sqrt(2) & hence perimeter=2a+a.sqrt(2)
  6. So, do we know the OA for this question? I too prefer D to B.
  7. I think B is wrong as it should be dispose of, the 'of' is missing for this to be idomatic. Also 'those' pronoun is ambiguous. Anyone is more generic and better in this context.
  8. Can you please throw more light on Quant being tougher the second time? Was it at OG or Kaplan level?
  9. Can someone please help & respond!!
  10. Can someone explain these OA answers?
  11. how is C right? should we not use among when more than 2 are compared?
  12. D is right. I agree with yogesh's explanation.
  13. Industrialization and modern methods of insect control have improved the standard of living around the globe while at the same time they have introduced 10000 dangerous chemical pollutants, having gone virtually unregulated since they were developed more than 50 years ago. a) while at the same time they have introduced 10000 chemical pollutants ,having can't find anything wrong b) while at the same time introducing some 10000 dangerous chemical pollutants that have that refers incorrectly to pollutants, hould refer to modern methods c) while they have introduced some 100000 dangerous chemical pollutants at the same time, which have Which refers incorrectly to time d) but introducing some 10000 dangerous chemical pollutants at the same time that have misplaced adverb clause) but at the same time introducing some 100000 dangerous chemical pollutants, having 'introducing' not parallel to have improved My choice is A. Thoug i don't like using 'while' with 'at the same time'
  14. Hi: I have one more week before the actual exam . What should be the preparation startegy for this week? Any help & pointers in this regard will help. Should i take more tests or practise problems from OG again? Thanks
