  1. Hello, Would you please analyze this for me and let me know your valuable opinion? Thanks. The issue statement (from OG11) is this: "The rise of multinational corporations is leading to global homogeneity (similarity). Because people everywhere are beginning to want same products and services, regional differences are rapidly disappearing." My response goes like this (is it bit too lenngthy??): *********************************************** The central idea of given issue statement is that spread of multinational companies wipes out nation-specific differences and makes the world 'colorless'. I disagree with this central theme and also disagree with many related facets of it. The statement says that rise of multinational corporations (MNCs) leads to similarities. This statement gives an impression that MNCs decide and control the social, cultural and environmental flows of a nation in which they set up their business. In reality, when a MNC starts new operations in a new nation, its primary motive is to get benefited from business-avenues. Thus it always tries to capture this new consumer-base by leveraging their existing socio-ecomonic or socio-cultural roots. Example, when a fast-food MNC like McDonalds or KFC sets up new business in an Asian or African country, the first breed of products it offers is an adaptation of local recipe or local cuisine. Though its an introduction to the concept of fast food, the MNC just can not completely ignore local trends! The issue statement further makes a point that the local consumers everywhere expect same products and services from MNCs and hence regional differences disappear. One should understand that the consumer is a king! An MNC, just because it wants to spread the reach of its business can not thrust its product or service to all nations. It can at the most try to offer its product/service adapting to local flavors but if it doesnt address the real need of that nation, the business will fail! Can a refrigerator manufacturing company sell its products to Eskimos and will Eskimos use same set of refrigerators that Arabs use? Talking about services, can a cash-handling company like "Western Union" sell its services in a country like Iceland where percentage of credit card transactions in entire nation is as high as 97%? Finally, when an MNC ventures newer business avenues, it can not irradicate the roots of the nation with which it is dealing. Because the basic foundation in new nation - the employees - are no one else but this new nation's citizens! Since the producers themselves are part of the consumers, they will not abandon their old tastes overnight. For example, Levi Strauss is operational in Japan for decades. But Kimono (a dressing style of Japanese women) is still not outdated from Japan! Thus, MNC will continue to spead over nations, but they will not make the world flat. The world will still be colorful! *********************************************** Kindly rate this. Thanks much!
  2. Among the first ten cyclists who crossed the finish-line, 4 were Italians and 8 represented Telefonica team. How many cyclists who represented Telefonica team and finished in the top ten were not Italians? 1. 2 Italians who finished in the top ten did not represent Telefonica team 2. Each of the top ten finishers either was an Italian or represented Telefonica team or both OA is D. But I feel it should be A. Can someone explain, please? Thanks.
  3. Can someone answer this, please? Thx.
  4. Is the range of a non-empty set S bigger than its mean? All members of S are negative The median of set S is negative OA is D (Each statement alone is sufficient). But I am not convinced. Can someone explain please?
  5. Hi, I have one basic question. What is the range of a one-member set? Ex: What is range of {5} or range of {-3}? Thanks.
  6. In the xy-plane, at what two points does the graph of y = (x+a)(x+b) intersect the x-axis? 1) a + b = -1 2) The graph intersects the y-axis at (0, -6) OA is C (Both statements together are sufficient, but neither statement alone is sufficient) Can someone provide an explanation? Thanks.
  7. Thanks flex_manny. Krovvidy, your list of points is a great help! Thanks.
  8. Hi All, Is it safe to assume that if a range of set of numbers is larger, standard deviation of that set is higher? Is there a direct relation between range and standard deviation? (If it is so, it may help solving problems on std dev quickly) I searched the literature but didnt get any conclusive answer. Thanks and Regards.
  9. Hi Kiskopata,When I try to visit the URL mentioned by you, its giving me a message "The blog is open to invited readers only".If so, can you please send me an invite on idforgmat@yahoo.com? (I hope blogspot permits email IDs other than gmail)Thanks.
  10. Even I feel B is the answer
  11. IMO B Statement 2 says that x + y = 0 This clearly means that x and y have same value but opposite sign. (Ex: +2-2=0). Hence Statement 2 is sufficient. Statement 1 does not give any idea of values of x and y. Hence answer is B.
  12. No. There are two instances of N and A of which only 1 each are taken.
