  1. @scorpion.ks: I think as prevalent as is not correct... as "ten to thirteen times" clearly indicate that artist and people are not at the comparable at the same level. One of them is more than other and hence we cannot use " as ... as". Hence, I would reject "as prevalent as" choice
  2. To add to scorpion.ks... D is indeed parallel... The parallel construction in the sentence is: for urban apartment...... and for clustered suburban houses.... Paralleism point ends here where we are trying to keep urban and suburban houses parallel... Hence choices B, C, D and E are all parallel and choice A is ruled out. Next rule is the tense rule (as correctly identified by scorpion.ks) which will rule out B, C and E. Option D is the only gramatically correct and parallel statement and hence the answer...
  3. IMO E is the answer... below is the explanation: Charles Lindbergh, for his attempt at a solo transatlantic flight, was very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he therefore refused to carry even a pound of mail, despite being offered $1,000 to do so. (A) Charles Lindbergh, for his attempt at a solo transatlantic flight, was very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he therefore => All of them modify Charls.. Noun has to be close to it's modifiers... Incorrect (B) When Charles Lindbergh was attempting his solo transatlantic flight, being very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane, he => Incorrect © Since he was very reluctant to carry any extra weight on his plane when he was attempting his solo transatlantic flight, so Charles Lindbergh => Wordy (D) Being very reluctant to carry any extra weight on his plane when he attempted his solo transatlantic flight was the reason that Charles Lindbergh => he and his do not refer to Charls (E) Very reluctant to have any extra weight on his plane when he attempted his solo transatlantic flight, Charles Lindbergh => Correct.. Correctly modifies Charls Lindberg in the underlined sentence as well as clause following it
  4. OA is A.. This was an easy question... but only reason for posting this was to find out how you guys think about 'they'... as It seemed ambiguous to me, as it has 2 potential anteceedents.. 'Investoes' and 'Depressed property values'... Assuming that it'll not refer back to Investors is a bit non-techincal..as it can refer back to any of the 2 as per the rules... but yes.. this is the best of the given options..
  5. While depressed property values can hurt some large investors, they are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose equity-in many cases representing a life’s savings-can plunge or even disappear. (A) they are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose (B) they can potentially devastate homeowners in that their © for homeowners they are potentially devastating, because their (D) for homeowners,it is potentially devastating in that their (E) it can potentially devastate homeowners, whose Pls drop in a line for your choice... OA to follow
  6. I have another view point here. We need to be smart enough to apply these rules. 'Numbers of' is in-correct as told by every one but they also say that the correct form is 'A number of' or 'The number of' based on the usage. If you carefully see the choices in the answer.. none of them has the usage of 'A number of' or 'The number of' in the correct choices.. hence you can't evaluate the options based on 'numbers of' logic. A New Jersey's is one of the five highest number of reported B New Jersey's is one of the five highest numbers in reporting C New Jersey has a report of one of the five highest numbers of D New Jersey has one of the five highest numbers of reported E New Jersey reports one of the five highest number of Also, the usage of 'numbers of' here is not to count something. The actual word is number and it's plural is placed in the choices, because of the usage of "One of the". All I want to say here is that what rules say is not wrong.. but one needs to be smart in applying them.
  7. Agreed with scorpion.ks.. comma is desirable but not necessary.. specially in short sentences where there are not too many clauses which have to be seperated by a comma
  8. If you see the passage.. it states: In the years since the city of London imposed strict air-pollution regulations on local industry, the number of bird species seen in and around London has increased dramatically. Similar air-pollution rules should be imposed in other major cities If you read the colored sentence, it clearly states that the increase in bird species is noticed beacuse of pollition control measures, and the same is suggested for other cities. This clearly assumes that increase in bird species is desired
  9. I am confused between A and D. I think it should be D. If this is OA, I shall try and explain my answer
  10. 2.) Because fish look through water, their eyes are very different from a mammal. A. From a Mammal => Incorrect.. compares eyes with Mamal B. From a mammal 's => Correct.. Comparision is with Mamal's (eyes) C. From that of a mammal => Incorrect. Could have been a better option than B if that was replaced by those. D. that of a mammal => Incorrect. Unidiomatic E. Than is a mammal’s => => Incorrect. Unidiomatic
  11. Thanks for the explanation scorpion.ks.. This is one of the kind of question I have come across.
  12. Here is a sample question where Because of is correct: Because of differences in the humans body's internal pressure and the ocean's, it is essential that a diver returning to the surface ascends slowly or they will suffer a painful condition known as the "bends." A. Because of differences in the human body's internal pressure and the ocean's, it is essential that a diver returning to the surface ascends slowly or they B· Because of the difference between the human body's internal pressure and the ocean's, it is essential that a diver returning to the surface ascend slowly or they C· Because of the difference in the human body's internal pressure and that of the ocean, it is essential that a diver returning to the surface ascends slowly or he D· Because of differences in the human body's internal pressure and that of the ocean, it is essential that a diver returning to the surface ascend slowly or they E· Because of the difference between the internal pressure of the human body and that of the ocean, it is essential that a diver returning to the surface ascend slowly or he So we cannot generalise that 'Because of' is always wrong...
  13. OA is E. Dynamo, thanks for the explanation. I was not aware of "not.. nor" as an idiom
  14. @ Scorpio and @Dynamo... thanks for explanations OA is indeed E
  15. Answer is B. Agent of the cost should always follow the word 'cost' in the sentence. B correctly does that.
  16. 1. Despite no proof that the consumption of any particular foods reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods could help reverse blockage of coronary arteries, the blood vessels that feed the heart. (A) Despite no proof that the consumption of any particular foods reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods could (B) Despite no foods having been proved to reverse hardening of the arteries when consumed, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods can © Although the consumption of no particular foods have been proved to reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that to refrain from eating certain foods could (D) Although not proved that the consumption of any foods reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods can (E) Although it has not been proved that the consumption of any particular food will reverse hardening of the arteries, studies indicate that refraining from eating certain foods can Pls comment on your choice of option. 17. 1. Contrary to popular opinion, the movement toward a service economy is leading neither to lower standards of living, more of an unequal distribution of income, or displacing the physical production of goods. (A) leading neither to lower standards of living, more of an unequal distribution of income, or (B) leading neither to lower standards of living nor a more unequal distribution of income, or © not leading to either lower standards of living nor to more of an unequal distribution of income, and neither is it (D) not leading to lower standards of living, more of an unequal distribution of income, and it is not (E) not leading to lower standards of living or to a more unequal distribution of income, nor is it pls reason your picks... 18. 1. Agatha Christie's travels with her archaeologist husband inspired her to write several mystery novels 2. Agatha Christie's travels with her archaeologist husband served as inspiration for several of her mystery novels Trying to explain why E is OA. In A: As ve_boss correctly suggested, 'her' refers to Agatha Christie, but in option A we have a case of Possesive Pronoun. We can eliminate this option. In B: her correctly acts as a possesive pronoun refering back to possesive Agatha Christie's.
  19. Option C is the answer. Clearly the health officials concern is regarding the use of mosquito nets. Any option that can say that mosqito nets are not useful will strengthen the health officials ground. C clearly does that by stating that mosquito nets are not useful against mosquitos and hence can cause maleria.
  20. OA is A. This has been discussed before and Kill GMAT has given good explanation of the option as well. You can check it in the post below: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentence-correction/91237-mexican-agrarian-revolution.html#post594440
  21. IMO it's A. Many people have confusion between A and E. Here is my point of view on E by which I eliminated this option: e)many scientists had believed that phlogiston was released by combustion and was an imaginary substance whose properties were not fully understood Passive vioce as compare to option A
  22. Imo E.. agreed with explanations given by Scorpion.ks
  23. - Though now eaten in large quantities around the world and harmless, the tomato is a member of the generally toxic nightshade family, including belladonna, and was once thought to be poisonous itself as a result. => 'As a result' is not used correctly here. The cause is not properly defined. - The tomato, though now eaten in large quantities around the world and harmless, is a member of the generally toxic nightshade family, which includes belladonna, and it was therefore once thought to be poisonous itself. => 'and harmless' is not directly refering to Tomato. 'it was therefore once' is not correct. 'it' can refer to tomato, or nightshade family, or belladona. Unclear anticedent for the pronoun - Once thought to be poisonous itself, the tomato is harmless and now eaten in large quantities around the world, and is a member of the generally toxic nightshade family, including belladonna. => ', and is a member...' is not correctly modifying tomato - Though now eaten in large quantities around the world and known to be harmless, the tomato was once considered poisonous because it is a member of the generally toxic nightshade family, which includes belladonna. => Correct. Correctly modifies tomato by placing 'Though now eaten in large quantities around the world and known to be harmless' close to tomato and correctly modifies nightshade family by placing 'which includes belladonna' next to it at the end of the sentence - A member of the generally toxic nightshade family, including belladonna, the tomato was once considered poisonous even though it is harmless and now eaten in large quantities around the world. => 'including belladonna, the tomato...' looks like the tomato is also being examplified along with belladonna
  24. Byron possessed powers of observation that would have made him a great anthropologist and that makes his letters as a group the rival of the best novels of the time.
