  1. (1) x – y = 2 (x+y)2 = (x-y)2 + 4xy = 4 + 12 = 16 (x+y) = +/-4 Solving, x=3, y=1 or x=-1, y=-3 xy(x + y) = 12 or -12 INSUFFICIENT (2) x2 + y2 = 10 (x+y)2 = x2 + y2 + 2xy = 10 + 6 (x+y)2 = 16 (x+y) = +/-4 (x-y)2 = x2+y2-2xy = 10-6 = 4 x-y = +/-2 Solving, x=3, y=1 or x=-1, y=-3 or x=-3, y=-1 or x=1, y=3 xy(x + y) = 12 or -12 INSUFFICIENT Combining both statements, INSUFFICIENT Hence E. :)
  2. 'R' and 'S' scales are related in a linear fashion. Linear relationship can be defined by S = a*R But since they are not proportional, we introduce a constant 'b'. So S = a*R + b
  3. You are right. The correct question is 5^x – 5^(x - 3) = (124)(5^y) Accordingly I have corrected the post.
  4. Q6: A Lines 16 to 18 as well as lines 54 to 60 support the statement in 'A'. Q7 : B Lines 1 to 5, state that modern bankruptcy lwas focus on bankruptcy as a remedy for individuals and corporations in financial trouble. Thus creditors are not focus of these laws but they derive benefit because of the provisions of these laws. These lines therefore support 'B'. Q8 : A 'A' is correct because the author supports the modern laws several times in the passage. Q9 : E 'E' is correct because the author focuses on why changes in old bankruptcy laws were necessary, that led to modern bankruptcy laws. Q10 : A Lines 13 to 19 discuss the society's beliefs in favor of punishment for bankruptcy. 'A' is therefore correct. Q11 : B Since the author summarises his views in favor of modern bakruptcy laws in lines 54 to 60, 'B' is the best option that suitable to be included at the end of the passage. Q12 : D Lines 36 to 43 mention two reasons responsible for shift from punitive appoach to the modern approach. 'D' is supported by these lines. Q13 : D :)
  5. 'That' is a relative pronoun and starts an adjective clause which describes the noun 'Federal Reserve'.
  6. Pronoun 'it' should refer to subject of previous clause i.e. 'stable interest rates'. However it is not possible here since 'it' is singular. Obviously 'it' refers to 'Federal Reserve'. In 'C' 'would' is not required where simple furture tense will be sufficient. In addition 'C' is wordy. :)
  7. DEAR RAMBOPJ, Pls. use black color for questions. Thanks. :) 'Achievement of farm animals' in 'D' and 'E' well as 'achieving farm animals' in 'B' are unidiomatic phrases and confuse the meaning of sentence. 'As once' in 'A' is unidiomatic and fails to convey the correct meaning. It should be replaced by 'that was once'. 'C' is concise and grammatically correct. Hence C :)
  8. Except 'E' all options end with the phrase 'lions playing in trees without telephoto lenses' or 'lions playing in trees without the aid of telephoto lenses' meaning thereby that the lions are playing without lenses which is wrong. Placement of 'without the aid of telephoto lenses', is correct only in 'E', thereby conveying correct meaning of the sentence. Hence E :)
  9. Q1: (A) in the Federal Reserve keeping in control of inflation : 'Keeping in control of inflation' is awkward phrase.:INCORRECT (B) that the Federal Reserve will keep inflation under control : Concise and grammatically correct. :CORRECT © for the Federal Reserve, that it would keep control of inflation : 'It' does not have a proper reference.'Keep control of inflation' is awkward phrase. :INCORRECT (D) that inflation will be kept control of by the Federal Reserve : 'Kept control of' is unidiomatic. Unnecessary use of passive voice.:INCORRECT (E) that inflation would be kept control of by the Federal Reserve :'Kept control of' is unidiomatic. Use of 'would' as well as passive voice is unnecessary.:INCORRECT :)
  10. Q2: (A) which a commoner or foreigner could not enter without any permission : 'Any' is redundant. 'Foreigner' should be preceded by 'a' for parallel construction. :INCORRECT (B) which a commoner or foreigner could enter without any permission only : Omission of 'not' changes meaning. 'Only' is unnecessary.:INCORRECT © which no commoner or foreigner could enter without permission : Concise and grammatically correct. :CORRECT (D) which, without permission, neither commoner or foreigner could only enter : Awkward and wordy construction. :INCORRECT (E) which, to enter without permission, neither commoner or foreigner could do :Awkward and wordy construction. :INCORRECT :)
  11. Q11: Q1: If 5^x – 5^(x - 3) = (124)(5^y) 5^(x - 3){5^3 - 1} = 124*(5^y) 124*{5^(x - 3)} = 124*(5^y) 5^(x - 3) = 5^y y = (x - 3) Hence C Q2 : First employee can be assigned in 2 ways i.e. either to first or to second office. Similarly second and third employees can be assigned to any of the two offices. So total no. of ways = 2*2*2 = 8 Hence D Q3 : Let 30 = 6a + b and 60 = 24a + b Solving the two, a=5/3, b= 20 Let the required value on 'R-scale' is 'R'. 100 = R*a + b R = (100 - 20)/(5/3) = 48 Hence C Q4 : Integer n = 3a + 1 where 0 n 3a a Minimum value of a = 0, n=1 So 0 Hence C :)
  12. That's excellent advice. I will try to follow it. Hope you will continue to post more such exercises. Thanks.
  13. In 'A' and 'B' , 'exercise' and 'associated' are not parallel. In the correct choice, all the verbs should be parallel and in same tense. 'if calves exercise and associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight...... So 'they required' in 'C' and 'they have required' in 'D' are wrong verb tenses. 'E' is correct choice and uses parallel construction. :)
  14. Q8 : C In para 1, the sentence 'They maintain that the sources ...................omitted the response of Asian settlers to this territory.' and again in para 2 'But because a full study of a culture's historical relationship to its land cannot confine itself to a narrow record ofexperience, these historiographers have begun to recognize the value of other kinds of evidence, such as the actions of Asian settlers.' These two sentences support choice 'C'. Q9 : E In para 2 'But because a full study of a culture's historical relationship to its land cannot confine itself to a narrow record ofexperience, these historiographers have begun to recognize the value of other kinds of evidence, such as the actions of Asian settlers.' indicates the primary purpose and choice 'E' is therefore consistent with it. Q10 : E In para 1 the lines 'In this endeavor historiographers examining the history of the Pacific Coast of the United States have traditionally depended on the records left by European American explorers of the nineteenth century who, as commissioned agents of the U.S. government, were instructed to report thoroughly their findings in writing.' support choice 'E'. Q11 :E In para 2 , 'But because a full study of a culture's historical relationship to its land cannot confine itself to a narrow record ofexperience, these historiographers have begun to recognize the value of other kinds of evidence, such as the actions of Asian settlers.' indicates that other kinds of evidences include, actions of Asian settlers. It means there are evidences other than actions of Asian sttlers and these evidences may not relate to immigration of non-Europeans. Therefore author may disagree with statement in 'E' Q12 : D In last para the lines 'Their vision was reinforced by specialized skills involving swamp reclamation and irrigation systems, which helped lay the foundation for the now well-known and prosperous agribusiness of the region.' indicate that their specialized skills led to foundation of modern agribusiness of region. But it does not mention that the chinese settlers initially possessed these skills. Other skills and knowledge are specifically mentioned in the passage. Hence 'D'. Q13 : B The lines 'Their vision was reinforced by specialized skills involving swamp reclamation and irrigation systems, which helped lay the foundation for the now well-known and prosperous agribusiness of the region.' in the last para are consistent with the observation in 'B'. Q14 : B In last para the lines 'Their vision was reinforced by specialized skills involving swamp reclamation and irrigation systems, which helped lay the foundation for the now well-known and prosperous agribusiness of the region. ' are consistent with 'B'. :)
  15. A. Avalanches were most likely to happen when a large new snowfall covered an older layer of snow : Cause of avalanche is out of scope of the argument. :INCORRECT B. Avalanches destroyed at least some buildings in Sordellian Mountains in every year : Irrelevant to conclusion. :INCORRECT C. People planning new ski slopes and other resort facillities used increasingly accurate information about which locations are likely to be in the path of avalanches : If new ski slopes were planned in areas that are less prone to avalanches, the number of people caught in avalanches will not increase. However the number of people caught in avalanches will only decrease if number of people visiting new ski resorts in avalanche prone areas decreases. DOES NOT SEEM TO BE CORRECT, BUT BETTER THAN OTHER OPTIONS. D. The avarage length of stay for people visiting the Soderllian Mountains increased slightly : If length of stay increases, the chances that more people will be caught in avalaches might increase. Weakens the argument. :INCORRECT E. Constructions of new ski resorts often led to the clearing of wooded areas that had helped to prevent avalanches: Clearing of wooden areas should increase the occurrence / intensity of avalanches. Weakens the argument. INCORRECT :)
  16. It is a simple question of parallelism. Obviously 'failing to replace' in 'A' and 'B' is not parallel to 'for their failure to'. Similarly 'failing to replace' is not parallel to is not parallel to 'that they failed' in 'C' and 'D'. 'E' maintains parallelism. Hence 'E'. :)
  17. (A) supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that : 'That' refers to 'impact' , the noun immediately preceding it, illogically stating that it was the impact and not the fires that were reponsible for extinction of dinosaurs. : INCORRECT (B) supporting the theory that global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact : Clear and concise and gramatically correct. : CORRECT © that supports the theory of global forest fires that were ignited by a meteorite impact and that : Illogically states that 'theory of fires were ignited by ..impact'. Also 'and' introduces a coordinating clause which is unnecessary and wordy. : INCORRECT (D) in support of the theory that global forest fires were ignited by a meteorite impact and that :Unnecessary use of passive voice 'And' introduces a coordinating clause, making the construction wordy.: INCORRECT (E) of support for the theory of a meteorite impact that ignited global forest fires and : 'Of support for the theory' is unidiomatic. 'And' introduces coordinating clause which makes it wordy. : INCORRECT :)
  18. Use of 'had' in 'A' and 'B' is incorrect. 'Elected retiring' in 'C' is unidiomatic. Infinitive is the correct option. 'To retire' and 'facing' in 'D' are not parallel. 'E' uses parallel structure and is correct. :)
  19. (A) which permit that employees can balance home and work responsibilities better, realizing : Use of participle phrase 'realizing...' makes it an awkward construction. : INCORRECT (B) which permit employees balancing home and work responsibilities better will realize : Permit should be followed by infinitive and not gerund.: INCORRECT © that permit employees to balance the responsibilities of home and work better will realize : Grammatically correct. :CORRECT (D) that permit employees a better balance between the responsibilities of home and work, thus realizing : 'Better balance' is incorrect phrase. 'Thus realizing...' is unidiomatic construction. :INCORRECT (E) such that employees are permitted a balance between home and work responsibilities, and they will realize : Wordy and awkward construction. :INCORRECT :)
  20. 'E' can also be written as :only one (state/ of the states) in the East had. 'E' maintains parallelism but because of epilepsis, author has omitted 'state/of the states'. :)
  21. In equilateral triangle, the perpendicular from vertex, bisects the base. In fact the perpendicular divides the equilateral triangle in two congruent triangles (of equal area).
  22. A. Though little change in the size of the population is expected, a pronounced shift toward a younger, more affluent, and more entertainment-oriented population is expected to occur.: A pronounced shift toward more entertainment-oriented population is likely to increase the profitability. :CORRECT B. The sales of snacks and drinks in its movie theaters account for more of Lightbox’s profits than ticket sales do. : The break up of profit is out of scope of argument. :INCORRECT C. In selecting the mix of movies shown at its theaters, Lightbox’s policy is to avoid those that appeal to only a small segment of the moviegoing population.: If this statement is true then adding this to the information contained in the argument we arrive at the conclusion that despite the existing policy of selection of movies to avoid those appealing to a small segment of moviegoing population, the profitability of the company has not increased. Does not weaken the argument.: INCORRECT D. Spending on video purchases, as well as spending on video rentals, is currently no longer increasing.: Does not weaken the argument. :INCORRECT E. There are no population centers in the county that are not already served by at least one of the movie theaters that Lightbox owns and operates : Strenghthens the argument. :INCORRECT :)
  23. (1) x is an integer. xn = x(-n)=> x2n = 1 = x0 2n = 0 => n = 0 If n = 0 then x^n – x^-n = 0 will be true for all values of x. INSUFFICIENT (2) n ≠ 0 xn = x(-n)=> x2n = 1 => x = 1 or x = -1 INSUFFICIENT Combining both statements, x = 1 or x = -1 INSUFFICIENT Hence E. :)
