The outcome Crowe proposes isn't even Pareto efficient unfortunately.

I think most economists would be upset that, as the movie appears to set it up, the game where Crowe "discovers" his equilibrium doesn't have a NE in pure strategies. They all have an incentive to defect to the blonde. Recently watched Too Big To Fail and Paul Giamati as Bernanke and James Woods as **** Fuld were priceless.

In all seriousness I have serious doubts that market forces can bring about the last two without serious government intervention. It also depends on what we consider "poverty" and out of curiosity do you think a normal distribution of wealth is a good thing?

As far as I know no one else has heard anything despite a few attempts to contact the department. I received that letter as well I think it was dated May 2. If the others were as well I imagine that indicates they were sent out to our entire cohort.

In my experience if a professor is going to sell you as the best student they are recommending this year its quite obvious. Lukewarm letters can be similarly simple to pick up on. In your case if the letters are similar in quality I would consider diversifying with one from each relevant experience. Disclaimer: this advice may very well be terrible I just feel compelled to open all your threads b/c I love Arrested Development.

Lecture notes basically the whole way. Problem sets and exams amounted to doing math problems or showing knowledge of theory. I've never been one to glean much from textbooks though.

I took PhD Micro last fall (A-) and never cracked Varian or MWG for what its worth. I do however have both books and have read some of the stuff on risk aversion for my thesis.
