  7. Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons anD examples to support your answer I disagree with the statement that learning about the past has no value for us living in the present. A nation’s past or history is like precious gems, which are priceless. A person, a group of people or a nation together, all can benefit and learn from past mistakes or achievements. At times when someone is depressed or needs motivation, then past history can provide great examples. One can learn from his or her previous mistakes. If someone encounters a similar situation as he has previously faced, then this time he could make a better decision keeping in mind the previous decision’s outcome. Also one can take some help or hints from his achievements. Similarly, a nation, that is facing a trouble, can look or refer to its past for tackling such a similar problem. If that nation had no knowledge or had forgotten its past, then it would have been left clueless as what to do. Many examples from the past fits into today’s issues. We can look back to certain individuals for inspiration. For example, in my country’s history, there have been many true stories of heroism by military personnel or academic achievements by scientists and scholars. Whenever I or somebody else is lacking motivation, he can remember some of these heroes and role models for inspiration. When I was a kid, I got nervous and frightened when I had to do some work alone. At this moment my parents used to give me the example of Major Steve Collins, an army man who fought alone in the battle ground for 5 days and defeated the enemy, in order to boost my moral. It is well said that the nations who forget their past are soon forgotten by other nations. In history we observe that the nations who had a bright past and those who were proud of it and had preserved it, had gone on to lead the world. Countries such as the United States, whose history is extremely rich and whose history is taught in schools, are now leading the world. Due to the above stated reasons, I disagree that the past is of no importance to the people living in the present. A nation cannot afford to lose its past as it’s a great source of motivation and role-models for the younger generation. Please rate my essay. I have my test approaching soon. Please help and identify some major shortcomings that I must correct. Thankyou
