  1. Does Grad Micro really use that book? It's a fantastic book, but it's for intermediate micro, not grad.
  2. The big issue is that admissions committees aren't looking for personal statements of the usual form (that is, they aren't looking for the kind of thing you've written). They want academic details, not personal ones. See threads on this forum, like these.
  3. I think what you like is applied work rather than econometrics per se, and you're just calling it by a name that's not quite right. Econometrics itself is highly theoretical.
  4. Based on similar reasons to rthunder, I felt the post was kind of pretentious, sort of like the EJMR meme "The drop-off in input quality when you leave 02138/9 is pretty steep, and it must be even steeper when you look past the top 6-10. I mean this in the least arrogant way possible."
  5. sunspots energy economics (geothermal) interstellar trade (provided you are close enough to the stars)
  6. Goddamnit, you freaked me out and I searched what turned out to be the Postdoc results... then I searched last years results... Guess I gotta wait as an unaffiliated student.
  7. You sorted by Program Name instead of Field and omitted some of the quasi-economics programs they list: Institution | [New R] Harvard BusEc [2,11] Stanford EA&P [5,17] Harvard PEG [5,42] Caltech [16,26] Institution | [New S] Harvard PEG [3,6] Harvard BusEc [4,8] Caltech [4,9] Stanford EA&P [6,9] USC PharmEc&P [12,43]
  8. Many people categorize their undergrad by rank in the "Type of Undergrad" slot of their profile. I don't know how easy it would be to grab that, but that's where I was thinking the info exists.
  9. Is it possible to do some kind of rank mobility analysis? i.e. Given that an applicant comes from a school ranked/tiered X, what is the probability they get into a school ranked/tiered Y?
  10. Hmm, I wish I held on to my spot long enough to see if I would have made it. Oh well, no big deal.
  11. To update, I have received new information indicating that this policy has just changed because of the new DGS. As the others in this thread indicate, unfunded now does mean unfunded for 5 years unless you find some during your time there (e.g. through an RAship). Apologies for the misinformation.
  12. Yes, try and get your prof to introduce you. Especially if it's a neighbouring institution, it seems likely that there should be some contact.
  13. Go to UCSD and don't look back. Everything I've heard from various places indicates that UCLA is not a nice place to be.
