  1. my grades are all over the place from a's b"s nd c"s pretty much if it was a semester where i was really ill i did poorly. i have 1 grad math class an a. also took a few extra finance classes and biz type a"s also. i see the cuny grad school actually has a spring so i mean i would love to do a spring '10 start date. im studying for the gre"s now and taking a intl eco class and a macro class. i dont have a lot of math class maybe 4 all a"s or b+. i have a lot of practical work based cfa, cfp type math skills. math class a calc type class for biz majors (a, and i think either a-or b+), another math elective (a), math for business as a grad level class (a), stats b- & b. also im home bound for several months for medical reasons so i'm limited and cant really enroll in many classes unless they are online. does anyone know abut admissions to suny stony brook or cuny grad center? as you can see i really have a interesting background abut dont want to let my past medical problems hinder me. i also have strong corporate and consulting experience in finance.
  2. i would have loved to start this yr but i dont think thats possible. does anyone know about acceptance to stony brook or cunys? my background is in finance, while i dont have tons of math courses in college i took placement tests and placed out of them i have a lot of stat and financial type math. my eco and math baxkground are limited with subpar grades like i said due to extreme medical reasons. i really wanna go straight to phd and dont wanna wait any more yrs or pretty much get a new undergrad degree. i hold a lot of financial certifications and such that are math oriented.
  3. yea but where do i start? H-E-L-P anyone please. im so lost any study plan?
  4. Im looking to do work as a corporate economist (i do have a strong business background) teach, possibly do my own consulting firm. I would really like to be enrolled somewhere by next fall ('10). i was thinking of asking a few of the programs if i can take a class or 2 as a non-matric to demonstrate my ability? it may sound like a copout but i have the brains and determination like others on here i just really had some very very bad luck health wise. my ideal schools are stony brook and cuny. i want to stay in the long island/nyc area. I also dont want to end up essentially with another undegrad degree taking soo many courses. The schools I menioned also dont have straight masters programs its only phd. Can taking some more community college classes be usefull?I am also studying for the GRE. Im trying to be as realistic as possible I kow it is going to be tough and just really need to expert advice of the wise people on the forum
  5. So I need to take the GRE by next fall but I really wat to get it outta the way asap did I also mention I need to do incredible on it esp. quant to make up for very poor ug grades. im interested in a eco phd program. heres my problems: i'm the biggest procrastinator ever and really wanna do well and never see these books again, im hoping maybe summer to take it. i have a lot of time to study only issue is i may have to take the month of feb off due to surgery, could be only 2 wks but thats tbd. i dont think my brain would be clear enough to absorb info at this time also im terrible at verbal, my vocab is avg at best. as for math i thought i was good but skimmed thru some books and did horrible maybe i just need a refresher. ive always been good at algebra ype stuff. y other math problem is geometry i just cant do it, somehoe i got it in high school but i just cant seem to grasp it. i have the following books- possible even too many: Barrons Essential Words for GRE PR - Cracking GRE 2009 Ultimate Math Reffesher for GRE, GMAT, etc NOVA GRE Barrons GRE 2009 PR Word Smart for GRE Kaplan Verbal Flash Card for GRE maybe even some others burried in this huge pile can someone please help with a study plan? ive read the posts but started studying onc ebefore got frustrated so i dont wanna break my new yrs resolution. please thanks all happy new yr feel free to post or pm me, id love to hear bout some people with low gpa's that did really well thanks again
  6. I look at everyones great profiles and wonder if my dream of ever getting an eco phd will be achieved. i see people worried with 3.5"s, 3.8"s and if there worried i so far beyond that ha ha. my schools i want to go to are suny stony brook or a cuny. i graduated with a degree in finance 5+yrs ago with a shaky gpa all due to extreme medical reasons. my eco grades were poor c"s i should have withdrawn but thought i was superman and could battle major illness and get great grades. i took about 3 eco classes post grad at a community college(purely due to the low cost) all A"s also a grad level math biz class a, also think i am going to take another 2 stat/math type classes. my goal is to start one of thse programs next fall heres my problems: i havent taken the gre yet but want to obviously do extremely well i was thinking of asking them if i can take 1-2 classes as a non-matric student as i know some schools allow that? this way it will show how i can handle grad level work. im not getting any younger, and i really dont want to start on an eco masters programs than go to phd. i spoke to someone at one of these schools who what can i do? cuz i look at other peoples profiles here and just think ok my app will hit the garbage before they get past the 1st page. good news: i have over a year to maybe put some type of solid app together anyone have any advice? 'm at my witts end almost. please respond or pm me what can i do? or should i just apply for a job at walmart lol
