  1. I have a rough idea on what the first year and year 3 and beyond would look like since there have been a lot of discussions on those. but maybe not on the second year... i know i will be taking field courses and attending seminars. even trying to come up with research ideas and all that. but in terms of flexibility and work load, is it significantly better than the first year maybe or not so much? i'm trying to gauge because i'll be juggling between work and a long distance relationship. are you able to regularly travel on weekends and so on? please share your experience or what you know from PhD students! thanks!
  2. @SubEffect: mine was addressed to undisclosed recipients as well..
  3. Okay, so I just called Columbia and the coordinator said all the admitted students have been notified. She only has the waitlist left.
  4. In the past few years Columbia emailed everyone who's admitted at once. I don't know why they are not doing the same this year... Anyhow, I wish to find out soon!
  5. Anyone with any info on this? Thanks! :)
  6. do you mind sharing how you've found out? thanks!
  7. @ thewhiterabbit: Congrats! Do you happen to have any idea as to when the rest of admissions and rejections will be sent out? Or are all the admissions out already? Thanks! and congrats again!
  8. Just called the office too (which I probably shouldnt have... haha) but the person said sometime next week.
  9. Slightly off topic.. but do they interview applicants they're interested in?
  10. Anyone wanna take a guess on which school's gonna be next in line for tomorrow? I'm getting impatient having only heard back from one school so far..
  11. We could try to do the same and see if the department would let us know whether we are accepted or not. When I tried calling the office, they didn't pick up... Sounds unlikely though that they would do that!
  12. Do you guys think that the harvard posts are fake as well? I should really stay away from GC...
  13. I got intrerviewed today as well. It was very informal. The interviewer asked basic questions like what're your interest etc. She sounded like she was interviewing a lot of people and there are only 6-8spots available. So I'm not totally hyped. They are getting back during the first week of march.
  14. Did you apply to the political econ track or the economic analysis track? Did you post on GC as well? Thanks!
  15. There's an acceptance post on GC for Stanford GSB. Do they usually contact by phone? on the same day?
  16. Yup! Officially over for me. I'm out. Now I don't have to check this and the gradcafe every minute. But I do worry that I might have to wait a long time, like a week or so till the next offer/rejection.
  17. I got an interview invitation from Wharton as well. I feel like there are a lot of us getting interviews and only a few spots available. Well, I'm glad that I'm still in though!
  18. It seems that Wharton tends to send out rejections in mid-February and then invite people to interview. After that they will send out another batch of rejections and acceptances in mid-late March. Whether that would be the case this year is a question.... Do they accept without an interview as well?
  19. I graduated last year and a professor at my college (Top 3, IVY) tells me I have no or a very slim chance at Top 5 econ programs for following reasons (which I mostly agree with). I just wanted to hear your thoughts and possibly some advice on how I can address them, although I think that there is little I can do at this point.... 1) Poor grades in econ classes B+ in Intro Macro, B+ in Game theory, B in Finance. All other econ classes such as econometrics, intermediate micro/macro, labor econ, development econ, etc: Mostly A-'s with some A's Major GPA: 3.72, Overall: 3.78 2) 2 years of RA experience in college + 1 year of full-time RA experience post-college BUT NO PUBLICATIONS or coauthored paper 3) NO writing sample: I did do a senior project but didn't get a chance to revise it or anything. I'd rather not send it because I'm not very happy with the quality. I did take up to real analysis and got all As in my math courses except for an A- in analysis. But his thinking is that competition is fierce nowadays and from what he's seen in recent years, it's people with close to 4.0 GPAs and some solid publications who get into Top 5... HMMMMM...
  20. I am considering applying for both the econ phd program and business econ program at the same schools. If the business school has an "applied econ" or "regular econ" program, I don't think it would matter much. But I'm also applying to a few ones that don't have such programs. In that case, i'll be applying to "business econ" programs at the Business school, while applying for regular econ programs for labor econ. I do have two very different interests but since those two areas don't exactly match, I'm wondering that would make me look not as serious... As far as I know, I will have to specify that in the application, and the professors would know. Would this be okay? What are your thoughts?
  21. I'm working for a few years before grad school. Would it be better to work for a Fed (NY or Boston) or for a professor at a top econ program like Chicago or MIT? What do you guys think?
  22. I decided to work as a RA and apply next year or the year after. But it seems like it is not as easy to find a job as I expected... So I'm just really worried. Did anyone get an interview from the Boston Fed?
  23. I applied to some Feds but I feel like I need more options. Can you guys give me some suggestions on good research opportunities? And is there anyone who's got contacted for interviews from the Chicago/Boston Fed? Thanks!
