  1. I have a question about Boston - who won the recent marathon held in this fine city?
  2. Whew - talk about slacking off, I'm in Real Analysis right now and I can't concentrate at all. Perhaps I'm naive, but I can't seem to figure out what all these theorems about compactness have to do with microeconomics. Anybody want to answer that? What is it about Real Analysis that will be useful, anyway? (Knowing this grade doesn't matter at all doesn't help things one bit)
  3. UCSB is straight econ, but we both plan (as far as I know) to enter the EES program.
  4. It depends on where you live. In general, though, if you have a backpack and a bike you will be fine (and a friend with a car for when it's necessary). You will also get some exercise.
  5. ARES - I'm happy things look like they are going to work out. It was painful watching all those rejections. Keep your nose down and in 2 (1?) years you will have a bevy of options. It is awesome seeing hard work pay off. Congrats.
  6. And yes, things could have been far, far worse.
  7. Sorry to hear about no funds at UMD, Enviro, but it will be good to see you at UCSB in August.
  8. You can find List's CV on his webpage, he started at Central Florida.
  9. And of course, forgive my rudeness. Congratulations on picking a place. I hope you enjoy your time there. You, me, and Enviro should compare notes every 6 months or so.
  10. So what was the dice score? How many odd, how many even?
  11. I'll be living in Santa Barbara, about 10 miles from the school. It will be a commute, but it's ok because I like riding my road bike. A LOT. We spent a few weeks looking for a place. Everything was really expensive, or else it had a fatal flaw that made it unlivable for our purposes.
  12. I'm living with a lovely woman who you will no doubt have the pleasure of meeting should you attend UCSB. We have our place picked out already.
  13. I'm guessing he just changes his signature and just says a meek "hi" this morning, and then goes about his day.
  14. What about you, Enviro? Where you headed?
  15. Quit playing coy, you know you're going to UCSB.
  16. Remember that Lynham is one of a larger group, his placement/flyouts are not representative. It's a good point that the attention you are receiving from NCSU might not follow you into any of the years 1-5. This uptick thing in EES placements is definitely believable, though, considering how young the program is. I'd personally like to think I will be in as good a situation as Lynham was, although this is wishful thinking. If you think you might not be as good a fit at NCSU (for exp/beh reasons, or for issues specifically within ARE), definitely come to UCSB. You get one chacne at being with advisors you mesh with.
  17. You referring to the GC post ridiculing him?
  18. cjw - I think NCSU is better for you because: 1) seems like you have access to some of the economists at Duke, should you want that 2) they are giving you a lot of attention, you are their star. big shoes to fill, but if you come close, the job market is yours 3) of course, having a relatively high stipend doesn't hurt 4) 3 words - placements, placements, placements There are some other minor points, but the big one is that they are peppering you with attention. they clearly want you, and it sure seems like you will get the most attention when you pick advisors. You will also probably have any help from anyone, whenever you want it. You are their star, they aren't going to let you fail. Pure speculation, but they could be using you as their great example down the road of how great their program is. Don't pass this opportunity up. You are just a body at UCSB, as am I.
  19. Since the UCSB funding thread is dead, I thought I'd post here since most of the people looking at that also post on this one. UCSB came through today with the same TAship they offered to EnviroEcon and cjw10, for all 5 years. Yay! Since I don't have a stake one way or the other any more, I will comment on cjw's situation. It definitely looks like NCSU is the better choice - just my opinion. Good luck, man.
  20. I have to chime in on the "success related to funding" topic. There are just too many variables that affect whether a school funds you or not to say that it is a determinant of your success. I could provide a plausible scenario for an excellent, but unfunded, student who would excel at school A, and an equally plausible scenario for a poor, but funded, student who would fail miserably. And every scenario in between. I believe that not being funded definitely provides the incentive to work your *** off and ace those prelims. If you weren't sure of your abilities, you wouldn't be trying to get a Ph.D. And, surely, if you are funded you could definitely be more lax and think you don't have to try as hard to succeed. After all, the school believes you will succeed so much they are giving you ~30K. The initial success of securing funding could go to your head. It happens in sports all the time, and is the same reason you can't make 1000 layups in a row. To be sure, I don't think funding should be a primary determinant of where you choose to go to school. I think working with advisors whose interests are aligned with yours is of paramount importance.
  21. I completely agree with mermel, yet I have to be hypocritical and offer a suggestion. You should definitely put a z-table or a t-table on your arm.
  22. It's 5 mins (or less) to downtown, but definitely more than that to the boardwalk (although I don't know why you'd want to go there). Very nice houses in the area, although depending on the specific part, could be kind of close to the downtown rowdiness/seediness.
  23. Leave off MIT and Harvard that's kind of funny.
