  1. OA is A, A, A Heating-oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were last year. a. same b. Heating oil prices are expected to rise higher this year over last because refiners pay about %5 barrel for crude oil more than they did. ---> higher than not over c. Expectations are for (1) heating-oil prices to be higher this year than last year's (2) because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel for crude oil more than they did --->(1) is wordy; (2) is not parallel with this year d. It is the expectation that (1)heating-oil prices will be higher for this year over (2) last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crud oil now than what they were (3) ----> (1) is wordy: (2) not parallel with this year: (3) is wordy e. Sales of wine declined in the late 1980s, but they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease. a. same b. after the 1991 report that linked a reduced risk of heart disease with a moderate alcohol consumption, particularly red wine (1) , they began growing again (2)----> this one is tricky one and need careful examination; (1) should be "of" particularly red wind to refer to consumption; (2) the placement of this clause is so far from the antecedent Sales, making the sentence difficult to decode c. in a 1991 report, moderate alcohol consumption and(1) particularly of red wine, which was linked with a reduced risk of heart disease (2), caused them to begin to grow again (3)---> (1) particularly of red wine should be a modifier of consumption, not a parallel with consumption; (2) misplaced modifier, it is consumption that linked with a reduced risk not red wine; (3) wrongly suggests that consumption caused an increase while, in fact, the report should be the main subject of the sentence d. with a reduced risk of heart disease linked in a 1991 report with moderate alcohol consumption (1), in particular red wine (2), they began growing again.---> (1) awkward; (2) should be of red wine e. a reduced risk of heart disease linked to moderate alcohol consumption in a 1991 report (1), and in particular red wine (2) , started them growing again.---> (1) wrongly modifier of consumption; (2) wrong modifier 126 The use of lie detectors is based on the assumption that lying produces emotional reactions in an individual that, in turn, create unconscious physiological responses. ---> the sentence is intended to describe the cause and effect of emotional reactions and unconscious physiological responses. Therefore, the subject of the verb "create" should be "reactions" a. same b. that creates unconscious physiological responses in turn----> S-V agreement, creates does not agree with reactions c. creating, in turn, unconscious physiological responses ----> if used to describe cause and effect, it needs a comma between creating, making creating a participial phrase to modify reactions. In that case, the sentence will look like this: " The use of lie detectors is based on the assumption that lying produces emotional reactions in an individual, creating, in turn, unconscious physiological responses. d. to create, in turn, physiological responses that are unconscious ---> suggests a purpose rather a cause and effect relationship e. who creates unconscious physiological responses in turn----> wrongly refer to individual Hope it helps

  4. In countries where automobile insurance includes compensation for whiplash injuries sustained in automobile accidents, reports of having suffered such injuries are twice as frequent as they are in countries where whiplash is not covered. Some commentators have argued, correctly, that since there is presently no objective test for whiplash, spurious reports of whiplash injuries cannot be readily identified. These commentators are, however, wrong to draw the further conclusion that in the countries with the higher rates of reported whiplash injuries, half of the reported cases are spurious: clearly, in countries where automobile insurance does not include compensation for whiplash, people often have little incentive to report whiplash injuries that they actually have suffered. In the argument given, the two boldfaced portions play which of the following roles? a. The first is evidence that has been used to support a conclusion that the argument criticizes; the second is that conclusion. b. The first is evidence that has been used to support a conclusion that the argument criticizes; the second is the position that the argument defends. c. The first is a claim that has been used to support a conclusion that the argument accepts; the second is the position that the argument defends. d. The first is an intermediate conclusion that has been used to support a conclusion that the argument defends: the second is the position that the argument opposes. e. The first presents a claim that is disputed in the argument; the second is a conclusion that has been drawn on the basis of that claim.
  5. OA is D and D. @gmatfundoo: can you explain your reasoning? Tks
  6. 1. As a large corporation in a small country, Hachnut wants its managers to have international experience, so each year it sponsors management education abroad for its management trainees. Hachnut has found, however, that the attrition rate of graduates from this program is very high, with many of them leaving Hachnut to join competing firms soon after completing the program. Hachnut does use performance during the program as a criterion in deciding among candidates for management positions, but both this function and the goal of providing international experience could be achieved in other ways. Therefore, if the attrition problem cannot be successfully addressed, Hachnut should discontinue the sponsorship program. In the argument given, the two boldfaced portions play which of the following roles? A. The first describes a practice that the argument seeks to justify; the second states a judgment that is used in support of a justification for that practice. B. The first describes a practice that the argument seeks to explain; the second presents part of the argument’s explanation of that practice. C. The first introduces a practice that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides grounds for holding that the practice cannot achieve its objective. D. The first introduces a policy that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides grounds for holding that the policy is not needed. E. The first introduces a consideration supporting a policy that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides evidence for concluding that the policy should be abandoned. 2. Since it has become known that several of a bank’s top executives have been buying shares in their own bank, the bank’s depositors, who had been worried by rumors that the bank faced impending financial collapse, have been greatly relieved. They reason that since top executives evidently have faith in the bank’s financial soundness, those worrisome rumors must be false. They might well be overoptimistic, however since corporate executives have sometimes bought shares in their own company in a calculated attempt to dispel negative rumors about the company’s health. In the argument given, the two boldfaced portions play which of the following roles? A. The first summarizes the evidence used in the reasoning called into question by the argument; the second states the counter-evidence on which the argument relies. B. The first summarizes the evidence used in the reasoning called into question by the argument; the second is an intermediate conclusion supported by the evidence. C. The first is an intermediate conclusion that forms part of the reasoning called into question by the argument; the second is evidence that undermines the support for this intermediate conclusion. D. The first is an intermediate conclusion that forms part of the reasoning called into question by the argument; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. E. The first is an intermediate conclusion that forms part of the reasoning called into question by the argument; the second states a further conclusion supported by this intermediate conclusion.
  7. @abhasjha Tks a lot for your helpful link. Ii'm enjoying practicing those questions.
  8. Kitchen magazine plans to license the use of its name by a line of cookware. For a magazine, licensing the use of its name for products involves some danger, since if the products disappoint consumers, the magazine's reputation suffers, with consequent reduction in circulation and advertising. However, experts have evaluated the cookware and found it superior to all other cookware advertised in Kitchen. Therefore, Kitchen can collect its licensing fees without endangering its other revenues. The argument above assumes which of the following? a. No other line of cookware is superior to that which will carry the Kitchen name. b. Kitchen will not license the use of its name for any products other than the line of cookware. c. Makers of cookware will not find Kitchen a less attractive advertising vehicle because the magazine's name is associated with a competing product. d. Consumers who are not regular readers of Kitchen magazine will be attracted to the cookware by the Kitchen name. e. Kitchen is one of the most prestigious cooking-related magazines.

The pensions were increased when the number of people below the poverty level reached an all-time high. c. City-dwellers in Runagia rarely travel to rural regions of the country. d. Pls help to clarify your choices. OA is
