  4. Please comment The issue at hand is whether mass media has helped encourage creativity or stifle it. In my opinion, the availability of vast source of information helps in developing intellect and curiosity. Humans have urbanized from primitive ages to globalization era by slowly building on previous information. With increasing knowledge of humans more information is necessary to satisfy their curiosity. Increasing access to vast source of information through mass media has catered to the need of increasing curiosity of humans. Mass media also provides for information on which new and better human ideas can be based. It is a vast source of information through which new areas and dimension of human thinking develops. Thus, it fires insatiable creativity in humans. For example, a program on cars can make us look at cars as much more than just a mean of transportation. This may trigger a curiosity to know about cars or other means of transport. Secondly, information through mass media may also help to provide for a missing link in some innovative idea. This may help in improving the idea and also to make it a reality. For example, a scientist working on some computer program may come across wildlife program which shows a predator and prey relationship that may be used in the computer program. This new information may trigger new dimension and area in his project. Finally, mass media provides knowledge about various aspects of life. This helps us in perceiving an issue from a different standpoint. For example, information about various cultures and civilization in the world may help us to improve our society. This knowledge may help us to judge flaws in our society and replace them with good points of some other culture. This makes us more intelligent and tolerant. In conclusion, I think that mass media has helped increase human creativity and intellect. The vast source of information provided by mass media has helped increase our knowledge and also foster our creative thinking.
  5. Please comment The issue of freedom versus structure in an ideal learning environment is debatable. This is a very crucial issue and to draw a clear line between freedom and structure is an enormous task. Educational system based exclusively on structure or freedom is bound to fail. Both of these have to be addressed to make for an ideal learning experience. But, I would give more emphasis to freedom than to structure in an institution. Firstly, freedom is necessary for breeding new ideas. Original and new ideas can only emanate if person are given freedom of thought. If an institution fails to provide freedom of thought for its students it will produce stereotypical scholars, who will lack innovative thinking. For example, if an institute does not award original thinking than students will take no extra pains to write their reports. Most of the students will copy their reports from sources such as internet. Secondly, institution should have structures which allow students to take courses of their interest. If such a freedom is not given than the students may lose interest in his or her studies. Freedom to choose and study courses of one’s own interest helps develop one’s potentials to the fullest. However, certain basic courses necessary for students all round development should be taught to everybody. On the other hand, giving total freedom may also hamper with the institution’s operation. Total freedom can also be taken by students as indolence on the part of the institution. Too much freedom can also harm students by making them lethargic and irresponsible towards their work. Thus students may not develop qualities such as punctuality and discipline, which are essential for success. In conclusion, it may not be easy to draw a line between freedom and structure but institutions should aim to provide a perfect blend of both to make an ideal learning experience for the student. Both the qualities are essential for development and success of a student.

(D) Consumer and producer prices have been rising, like interest rates do. (E) Consumer and producer prices, as interest rates, have been rising. 7. caterpillar, You seriously need to think whether you want to do MBA or continue with Computer. In my opinion, you should try to concentrate more on what you want and not what your friends say? If you want to do prusue higher studies (computers) than IIT are as good as any other institute in the world. This I can assure you ( I am in third year IIT Delhi & also because lot of my hostel seniors took GATE and are doing there Mtechs here ).. anyway you can always go PhD later from abroad. So, I would advice you to think what would you like to do .. MBA or Ms/M-tech. Then plan for that. HTH!! (Erin style)

  10. Please grade this essay...Best way to advice people The author says that the best way to advise other people is to know what they want and then help them to attain that. I feel that this is not the best way to advise people. If you are telling people how to attain what they feel is correct then it is not the same as advising people. Rather, I feel it is to say what they what to hear. Firstly, to give advice is to express your opinion on the issue. People generally seek advice when they are in dilemma and want another thought on the issue. But if you try to find out what they want and then advice them on how to attain it, is to give a false advice. Admittedly, this would make them happy. They would think that you also feel the same way about the issue. They would probably try your advice and may be succeed in attaining it. This way you have helped him to attain his goal but that is not the same as to give an unbiased advice. This example would make my argument more clear. If your friend is planning to buy some property which he thinks will grow in price in future. But you feel otherwise. You think or know that the price of the property is sure to go down. However, you have guessed his stand on the issue and thus advice him on how to buy the property. In near future, the price of property goes down and your friend loses money. Now, the argument is that advising your friend on how to buy the property is not same as advising him on whether to buy the property or not. Secondly, I feel that most people don’t know what is best for them. Parents always face this problem while advising their children. For example, if a child wants to drop out of college and get a job. A parent would be wrong in advising him to do so. Instead he should advice him that continuing education would be in his or her best interest. In conclusion, what I feel is that one should give an unbiased advice whenever asked for. If other person seeks advice it is because they want someone to give them another opinion or some argument to judge their decision with. Thus, I disagree with the statement that the best technique to advice is to know what others feel about it and then help them to attain it. In my estimation, the pitfalls of this technique outweigh any potential it has. thanks
  11. Please grade this essay...thanks Which is more effective – a central authority system or a distributed power system. This is a question faced by almost every organization. In my opinion, a distributed system is better than one in which all the power rests with a single authority. Firstly, it makes employees feel as a part of the organization. In a system where everyone has a right in decision making, the product or the idea that is finally approved is through consensus. This makes everybody feel responsible for the product or the idea. This inculcates a feeling of self motivation and teamwork. The workers feel as if they are working for themselves. Whereas, if the idea is forced upon them by some central authority than they might feel as if they are working for some other person. For example, the Sahara group of companies is owned by a man who calls himself the chief worker of the organization instead of the CEO. Also, all the workers in the organization have a say in the decision making process of the organization. This has worked exceptionally well for the company in term of profit and getting goodwill. Many of its employee work for wages lower than normal because they want to be associated with the company. Admittedly, a central authority system might work in some cases. For example, generally in an emergency situation a doctor takes a decision and the team agrees to it and work on the patient accordingly. In such a situation, where the decision has to be taken in split second, the authority may rest with the most experienced person. However, in other cases where the time period involved in making the decision is substantially large, there should at least be a team which discusses the problem at hand. If in such an organization, all the decisions are taken by a single person than that leader is no better than a dictator. Moreover, the characteristic of the organization would also be like its leader. For example, if a leader is very aggressive than the organization would also deal with all its issues aggressively. This would hamper the flexibility of the organization. On the other hand, an organization in which a team takes a decision would be balanced in nature. It might take an aggressive step or might play safe; according to the situation at hand. In conclusion, I feel that a distributed system to make decision is better than a central authority system. Though a central authority system might work in some cases, but in present day scenario its chances of failure is more than success.
  12. Please grade this essay. Also, please tell me if I am getting the topic correctly. Thanks Many people debate (ponder) on whether a company should have hierarchical structure or flat structure. The author of the issue supports a flat structure to a hierarchical structure on grounds of co-operation and collegiality. In my opinion (outlook), a hierarchical structure is better for many reasons. Firstly, a company needs many ingredients to succeed besides co-operation and collegiality; good leadership, motivation to succeed, and growth for its employees are some of them. We see many companies revive (resuscitate) themselves from almost bankruptcy to greater heights and the key reason for most of their success has been leadership. For example, Chevrolet was revived by Mr. Lee Iacocca from bankruptcy. Most of the credit goes to his great leadership qualities, his inspiring personality and his ability to motivate his employees. Moreover, an authoritative figure is also needed at times to settle dispute and make decisions which in a flat organization might get unresolved. Secondly, in a company with hierarchical structure a worker is held accountable for his work to his boss. This ensures completion of work at the right time. Also, there are incentives for workers to go an extra mile in order to improve. Their efforts would be recognised by their leaders and would be rewarded. In a flat structure, since all employees are equal, the extra work done by someone would not reward in his promotion or a bonus. There is thus no incentive for workers to improve their skills. This lack of competition hampers the growth of company and its employees. In conclusion, although flat structure has its advantages but I feel that its flaws out weighs its benefits. For the reasons mentioned above, I feel that hierarchical order is better for a company since it leads to growth both for the company and its employees.
