I am fairly surprised too, but it does seem that only a handful of Canadian students end up in top PhD programs in the US. It is not impossible, and I can't speak for other programs, but I feel that in UWO, if you do well and impress your profs then they are willing to put in a lot of effort to get you into a top PhD program. However, you may also consider applying to a few MA programs in the US such as BU, NYU and so forth. I have a friend who applied to MAs in the states and she has some success with it (got into BU for example).

I may add that in addition to UBC/Queens, you should consider Western Ontario. I am an undergraduate from there and I have to say I am extremely happy with my graduate school results (see my profile and results in the profiles/results thread). Anyways, the last two weeks I have visited four schools (Northwestern, NYU, UPenn and Stanford). With the exception of Stanford, where an UBC undergrad was also accepted, I did not meet any other Canadian students (now it's possible there are more who are accepted but I would imagine they will attend those flyouts if they did get in). There are a few (like 4) Canadian students at NYU and Northwestern in their 2nd or 3rd year, and from what I remember, 1 is from U of T undergrad, 2 from Queens MA and 1 from UBC undergrad. So on the face value, it seems Queens and UBC are good choices. But I should add that two years ago, one of the MA student from Western Ontario got into Yale, 3 years ago, one guy (undergrad) got into everywhere (princeton/yale + the places I got in). There is connections between Western and a few schools in the states (e.g. UPenn, Northwestern, Michigan, Minnesota). So if you do well in Western Ontario, I'd say you may have good chance at one of those places if not more. Now, by well I mean you have to be probably the top of your class to have a good chance, but this goes even if you go to Queens or UBC. And with respect to Private sector jobs, from what I hear the Bank of Canada is mostly run by Western graduates (I'm not sure, but you should check out for yourself), so you would have some government connections if you come to Western Ontario. Other than that, work hard, take a lot of math courses, and remember LORs are the most important thing in your app.

Looking back now, it was probably too much (I didn't know about TM back then). But I think it may have helped, especially for getting me admission from Chicago since I mentioned I am a Libertarian and big fan of Friedman (both are true statements). Other: RESULTS: Acceptances: (Full funding): Stanford, NWU, UPenn, NYU, UMN, UMichigan (Partial Funding)Chicago Waitlists: MIT Rejections: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Berkeley What would you have done differently? Nothing really, other than taking more math courses (especially in Probability theory). I am very surprised by my result. My LOR writers must have gone all the way for me. I am very very grateful for their help.

I am bag-packing across europe with a buddy of mine. Anyone else traveling to Europe this summer?

At the behest of my supervisors, I have decided to go visit NYU, Penn and Northwestern in a couple of weeks (anyone else planning to do the same?). I will be missing a whole week of class for this since the flyout is spread out throughout the week and it's not feasible for me to fly back home in between. I know I maybe a little obsessive but I really hate missing classes (especially towards the end of the semester). Does you guys think skipping classes for flyouts is a no brainer?

The admissions email states that the flyout date is april 8th and 9th. Does that mean I can choose one of the days? or are both days part of the flyout?

I think if anything. It's a testament to how important LOR is. Because I get into several top ten schools and the courses I have taken and the grades I have are not necessarily stronger than some of the profile you described who are rejected by many places. My research experience is not that strong either (one summer of RA). I think LOR is definitely what separates you from the other 500 equally competent applicants (in terms of grades). So get to know your profs!

How would you rank the following schools (both the econ department and business school) in terms of strength in financial economics. Northwestern Stanford NYU UPenn and if for a given school, the business school is strong in financial econ, can anyone tell me whether there is a lot of interaction between the B school and the econ department? Thanks a lot for the help!!!!

Me too. This is my last school! Acceptance by Stanford gave me a very slim hope about getting into MIT.:whistle:
