  1. Econometrica is not just for econometric related papers. It also contains a lot of papers in theoretic micro for what I know.
  2. why don't you guys all join the facebook group for incoming class (kellogg people are welcome too) just search "Northwestern University Economics PhD Class of 2015" on facebook.
  3. I am fairly surprised too, but it does seem that only a handful of Canadian students end up in top PhD programs in the US. It is not impossible, and I can't speak for other programs, but I feel that in UWO, if you do well and impress your profs then they are willing to put in a lot of effort to get you into a top PhD program. However, you may also consider applying to a few MA programs in the US such as BU, NYU and so forth. I have a friend who applied to MAs in the states and she has some success with it (got into BU for example).
  4. I may add that in addition to UBC/Queens, you should consider Western Ontario. I am an undergraduate from there and I have to say I am extremely happy with my graduate school results (see my profile and results in the profiles/results thread). Anyways, the last two weeks I have visited four schools (Northwestern, NYU, UPenn and Stanford). With the exception of Stanford, where an UBC undergrad was also accepted, I did not meet any other Canadian students (now it's possible there are more who are accepted but I would imagine they will attend those flyouts if they did get in). There are a few (like 4) Canadian students at NYU and Northwestern in their 2nd or 3rd year, and from what I remember, 1 is from U of T undergrad, 2 from Queens MA and 1 from UBC undergrad. So on the face value, it seems Queens and UBC are good choices. But I should add that two years ago, one of the MA student from Western Ontario got into Yale, 3 years ago, one guy (undergrad) got into everywhere (princeton/yale + the places I got in). There is connections between Western and a few schools in the states (e.g. UPenn, Northwestern, Michigan, Minnesota). So if you do well in Western Ontario, I'd say you may have good chance at one of those places if not more. Now, by well I mean you have to be probably the top of your class to have a good chance, but this goes even if you go to Queens or UBC. And with respect to Private sector jobs, from what I hear the Bank of Canada is mostly run by Western graduates (I'm not sure, but you should check out for yourself), so you would have some government connections if you come to Western Ontario. Other than that, work hard, take a lot of math courses, and remember LORs are the most important thing in your app.
  5. Type of Undergrad: Top 3 Canadian University (in economics) Undergrad GPA: 95 cumulative, ~97 for math/econ courses Type of Grad: Taking first year PhD Micro Grad GPA: N/A GRE: Q800,V730,W5.5 Math Courses: Calc I-IV , Lin Alg I-III, Differential Eq, Metric Topology, General Topology, Real Analysis I-II, Intro. to Probability and Stats Econ Courses: standard honors sequence in Micro/Macro/Metrics, and some Math of Econ Other Courses: Letters of Recommendation: One well known in his field, Two semi-known. I have taken classes from the two semi-known ones. I have RAed for the well-known one for the summer. They all know me well. Research Experience: RAed during third year summer. Did matching/social network stuff. Teaching Experience: N/A Research Interests: Applied Game theory, IO SOP: Spent a lot of time on it. Looking back now, it was probably too much (I didn't know about TM back then). But I think it may have helped, especially for getting me admission from Chicago since I mentioned I am a Libertarian and big fan of Friedman (both are true statements). Other: RESULTS: Acceptances: (Full funding): Stanford, NWU, UPenn, NYU, UMN, UMichigan (Partial Funding)Chicago Waitlists: MIT Rejections: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Berkeley What would you have done differently? Nothing really, other than taking more math courses (especially in Probability theory). I am very surprised by my result. My LOR writers must have gone all the way for me. I am very very grateful for their help.
  6. I am bag-packing across europe with a buddy of mine. Anyone else traveling to Europe this summer?
  7. At the behest of my supervisors, I have decided to go visit NYU, Penn and Northwestern in a couple of weeks (anyone else planning to do the same?). I will be missing a whole week of class for this since the flyout is spread out throughout the week and it's not feasible for me to fly back home in between. I know I maybe a little obsessive but I really hate missing classes (especially towards the end of the semester). Does you guys think skipping classes for flyouts is a no brainer?
  8. The admissions email states that the flyout date is april 8th and 9th. Does that mean I can choose one of the days? or are both days part of the flyout?
  9. I think if anything. It's a testament to how important LOR is. Because I get into several top ten schools and the courses I have taken and the grades I have are not necessarily stronger than some of the profile you described who are rejected by many places. My research experience is not that strong either (one summer of RA). I think LOR is definitely what separates you from the other 500 equally competent applicants (in terms of grades). So get to know your profs!
  10. How would you rank the following schools (both the econ department and business school) in terms of strength in financial economics. Northwestern Stanford NYU UPenn and if for a given school, the business school is strong in financial econ, can anyone tell me whether there is a lot of interaction between the B school and the econ department? Thanks a lot for the help!!!!
  11. Me too. This is my last school! Acceptance by Stanford gave me a very slim hope about getting into MIT.
  12. Institution: Princeton Program: PhD Economics Decision: Reject Notification date: 3/9 Notified through: E-mail Posted on GC: No Comment: was my best shot of getting into a top 5 phd program I actually wanted to go. I thought i had a chance and now it hurts a bit. Institution: NYU Program: PhD Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: waiting for the info Notification date: 3/9 Notified through: E-mail Posted on GC: No Comment: Happy to get in.
  13. To all of you who are accepted to Chicago. Was it very clear in your acceptance email what the funding is going to be like? On mine, it mentions Stipend for year 3, 4 and 5. But it only explicitly states that for the first two years, they provide tuition waiver and health insurance. Does this mean I don't have a chance for stipend for the first two years at all?
  14. So it says 21k for five years? cuz mine just says 21 k of TAship for year 3 and 4 and 5. It only mentions tuition waver and health insurance for year 1 and 2. does that mean I have no chance of getting funding for the first two years now?
  15. how many hot girls do you see in graduate economics? Seriously.
  16. Institution: UPenn Program: PhD Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: 22k first year, offers for year two onward is not clearly stated int he email Notification date: 3/2 Notified through: Email Posted on GF:Nope Comments:Got a tough choice between this and Northwestern Institution: UC Berkeley Program: PhD Economics Decision: rejected Funding: Notification date: 3/2 Notified through: Email Posted on GF:Nope! Comments: Wasn't too fond of the school to begin with, and didn't like the personal background essay I had to write for the app. Only applied to it because it's top 10. Also I misspelled Berkeley as Berkley once in my SOP. So I guess i deserve this rejection.
  17. To those who have received funded offer from UPenn. Was it clear in your offer letter whether funding from 2nd year on is in the form of TAship or RAship? It says on mine that I just need to pass an English requirement test thing for TA, but nothing more.
  18. Economics studies how people respond to incentives, which would help us understand a lot about individual behaviors and the way society functions. One of the consequence of this understanding of these is that we can design a better (both in terms of efficiency and "fairness" ) economics/political system. For examples, economics explains, through incentives, why a communist economic system will not work or that using inflation to sustain full employment is not possible in the long run. And think about how many people around the world suffered due to unsound economic policies, it is obvious what economics can and have contributed to the world.
  19. Institution: Yale Program: Phd Decision: rejected Funding: Notification date: 2/18 Notified through: email Posted on GF: no Comments: Was a little surprised, so were my advisors, but they conjectured that maybe some of the students that went to yale from my school haven't been doing well. Oh well, I was pretty bummed for the weekend until the admission started coming in. Institution: Northwestern Program: Phd Decision: Accepted Funding: 20.9 k + tuition for four years, 15k the last Notification date: 2/20 Notified through: checked the website Posted on GF: no Comments:was feeling so down after yale's rejection, it's a huge relief. Institution: Minnesota Program: Phd Decision: Accepted Funding: 20 k + tuition for first year, 15k for the rest Notification date: 2/22 Notified through: email Posted on GF: no Comments: Very very glad.
