  1. Thank You Brent and Future Works.. I have one question.. I am applying to a college but I want them to consider my previous scores rather than the new ones. The issue is that I have asked GMAC to send the test report (on the test day) during the second test and not the first. Since, the GMAC says that they send all the test reports to college..Do I need to ask GMAC to send my test report to the school once again so that in "some way" they focus on my previous score?? Thanks again
  2. A family has two children. What is the probability that both the children are boys given that at least one of them is a boy ? A. 1/2 B. 1/3 C. 1/4 D 2/3 E. 1/8
  3. I agree with you ..Lav.. It doesn't look right to me either increasing -> increased Moreover, I feel that none of them are actually parallel - "improved" is an adjective modifying gerund "recruiting"- I am not sure if a gerund can actually be modified by adjectives.. noun phrase, then gerund and then adjective modifying gerund ..things don't appear to be parallel at all. Any other comments?
  4. Hi all, Just wanted to share my side of the story, where I scored 660 this time on the GMAT. Unfortunately, it is worse than what I got last year in 2010 - 680. I had hoped to get more than 730 this time, with some effective preparation. To add to the agony, I regularly scored around 730-740 for various mock tests I gave. May it be Manhattan, Barrons, GMAT Prep, Kaplan etc etc.. (I was giving all these tests for the first time) and hence, I was fairly confident about my performance during the test day.. I must add that my least score on a mock test during my second prep was 680 (Kaplan). However, when I got the final scores, I was shattered.. I do believe, that tests conditions did make me a bit nervous. But, I never realized that it could affect my performance so much. I am still pondering where did I lack in my preparation? Anyways, I guess what's done is done! I am not sure right now whether I would give my GMAT again...but I thank this community for helping me out during various stages of my preparation! I would remain associated with this community for sharing information in the long run. :) Vipul
  5. What are the number of ways to pick a total of 4 cards from a deck of 52 playing cards in which two cards are red and two cards are black? 26! 26! 2! 24! 2! 24! 26! 26! 2! 2! 24! 2! 24! 52! 2! 26! Remaining choices - not important! Can anybody explain how OA is correct?
  6. I could get down to D & E, But clicked D because "found in a human cell" seemed very confusing. It appeared to be modifying either "information" or "different genes". However, I know that this is a rightly placed modifier, but the sentence just doesn' t seem correct enough. Hence, I chose D because "human cells’ different genes" was precise. Any suggestions on the grammatical effectiveness of my approach? I didnt get your reason for E though " How is merely" and "in a mere" different? and how"does "the" create a difference? THanks Vipul
  7. You are absolutely correct, Brent. What about this sentence: Raising children is a tough task. I am sure that the sentence is correct. Raising is the gerund and the subject of the sentence, which follows the verb "is" But, my question is how to find what is the subject of a sentence, when I generally encounter such sentences, where a noun may have an "ing" form of verb attached to it. It becomes hard to identify whether the ing form of verb actually is modifying the noun or acting as a subject of sentence. Many thanks, Vipul
  8. Another way. A perpendicular line will be shortest from Point (0,0). The line perpendicular to original line with an eq. y=mx+c is y=(-1/m)x+d Therefore, perpendicular line is y=-3/4x+d. Since, this line passes through (0,0), its eq. is y=-3/4x. (i.e, d=0) Solving the two eq.s for getting point of contact. (48,-36). Using Simple distance formula between the points (0,0), (48, -36). Distance equals 60. Ans C
  9. Please correct me and provide a better solution to this problem
  10. Finding x was easier, and x is 18 as mentioned in previous posts. (Check their calculations). x=19 only leaves 28 students in total. Now, y can only have 4 values: 1, 4, 5, 6 (Since x+y has to be greater than 18) In this problem, Venn diagrams helped me a lot. I could only figure out hit& trial method in such a scenario. H= History students E=English Students M=Maths Students HUEUM= H+E+M-H&E-H&M-M&E+H&M&E 30=19+22+25-H&E-H&M-M&E+H&M&E H&M&E= H&E+H&M+M&E-36......................(1) y is equal to least possible value of H&M&E. We need to find the value of H&M&E such that it is postive yet closest to zero. You have to draw a Venn Diagram to understand this calculation: Assume y = 1 The biggest value of H&E+H&M+M&E can be (1)+(3+1)+(21+1) = 27 According to eq (1), it should be 37 Using Venn's diagram: Consider H&M&E=4 The biggest value of H&E+H&M+M&E can be (4)+(3+4)+(18+4) = 33 According to eq (1), it should be 40 Consider H&M&E=5 The biggest value of H&E+H&M+M&E can be (5)+(3+5)+(17+5) = 35 According to eq (1), it should be 41 Consider H&M&E=6 The biggest value of H&E+H&M+M&E can be (6)+(3+6)+(16+6) = 37 According to eq (1), it should be 42 Hence, none of the solutions is correct (I checked multiple times), I kept on doing this calculation, because I was almost thr to find the answer. So on..Continue this trend, which is now clearly repetitive And you will find the value of y = 11, which produces H&E+H&M+M&E = 47 x+y = 11+18 = 29 Let me clarify my point with the exact scenario H=19 E=22 M=25 H&E=11 H&M=14 M&E=22 H&M&E=11 This is a case, where Students with only maths are 0, students with only history are 0, students with only history are 5. Total Number of students = 19+22+25-11-14-22+11 = 30
  11. Dear Everyone, I am really finding it hard to identify the subject of a sentence whenever the subject is a possible gerund/gerund phrase. In the end, I fail to assign the right verb (singular/plural) to the subject.. Please help with suitable explanation to the concept along with clarifications to the sentences below.. The rising costs of data processing ___________(has/have) hit the profits of many telecom industries. (What is the subject here - "Rising Costs" or "Costs"? why?) Declining values of plots and apartments ______(is/are) going to affect the real estate industry. What is the subject here - "Declining values" or "Values"?Why?) Rising inventories _________ (can lead/may leads) to higher production levels, thereby increasing profits for the organization. What is the subject here - "Rising inventories"/ "inventories"? Why? Please help! Regards Vipul
  12. Although genetic mutations in bacteria and viruses can lead to epidemics, some epidemics are caused by bacteria and viruses that have undergone no significant genetic change. In analyzing the latter, scientists have discovered the importance of social and ecological factors to epidemics. Poliomyelitis, for example, emerged as an epidemic in the United States in the twentieth century; by then, modern sanitation was able to delay exposure to polio until adolescence or adulthood, at which time polio infection produced paralysis. Previously, infection had occurred during infancy, when it typically provided lifelong immunity without paralysis. Thus, the hygiene that helped prevent typhoid epidemics indirectly fostered a paralytic polio epidemic. Another example is Lyme disease, which is caused by bacteria that are transmitted by deer ticks. It occurred only sporadically during the late nineteenth century but has recently become prevalent in parts of the United States, largely due to an increase in the deer population that occurred simultaneously with the growth of the suburbs and increased outdoor recreational activities in the deer's habitat. Similarly, an outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever became an epidemic in Asia in the 1950's because of ecological changes that caused Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that transmits the dengue virus, to proliferate. The stage is now set in the United States for a dengue epidemic because of the inadvertent introduction and wide dissemination of another mosquito, Aedes albopictus. 6. Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the author's assertion about the cause of the Lyme disease outbreak in the United States? (A) The deer population was smaller in the late nineteenth century than in the mid-twentieth century. (B) Interest in outdoor recreation began to grow in the late nineteenth century. © In recent years the suburbs have stopped growing. (D) Outdoor recreation enthusiasts routinely take measures to protect themselves against Lyme disease. (E) Scientists have not yet developed a vaccine that can prevent Lyme disease.
  13. MissionGMAT: B is incorrect..because it is unclear whether the president was charged with "administrative conduct" or "teaching administrative conduct".. Lav: consider a sentence: The doctrinal dispute resulted in the dismissal of the president of the seminary, who was charged with false doctrine teaching. Does it sound correct to you..Even if the phrase is a complex gerund..A sentence should not end with a verb... IMO A.. Any more thoughts please.. Both C and E - as you pointed are incorrect..because they are awkwardly constructed..
  14. In other words...in A -> "and" joins an independent clause and a dependent clause.. which is incorrect After crude oil, natural gas is the united states second biggest fuel source - Independent supplied almost exlusively from reserves in North America - Dependent (no subject)
  15. Can you explain why D cant be followed by "which"
  16. Consider the two sentences Despite the fact that Detroit automakers are offering significant discounts, Detroit Automakers are losing U.S. market share to lower-cost rivals from Japan and South Korea, which are gaining ground even while offering smaller discounts. Despite the fact that Detroit automakers are significant discounts, Detroit Automakers are losing U.S. market share to lower-cost rivals from Japan and South Korea, which are gaining ground even while offering smaller discounts. An easy question of logic and rhetorical construction... Between A and B unnecessary use of past tense could be avoided. The event is in present progressive tense..
  17. Question from Manhattan review SC guide • Manhattan GMAT Forumsn any case, under such a confusion between since/because.... "Because" should be used in causative statements... "Since" should be used in time related statements.. The sentence is incorrect because, The Federalist papers are not written because/since the writers were advocates of Constitution. To understand my assessment better... Try Inverting the sentence.. Since/Because......were advocates of the Constitution, The Federalist papers is a compilation of articles written by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, as well as a few by John Jay. Doesn't make sense! Right? The sentence would have been correct if The Federalist papers is a compilation of articles written by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, as well as a few by John Jay, who were advocates of the Constitution.
  18. Cretarious Period has already ended - past tense, therefore "marks" is not correct at all - present tense. A-D ruled out C: slammed and causing are not parallel It is difficult to isolate between B and E. But if you closely look, in E- the author talks about an event - but doesn't specify any event (or the name of any event). Thus, the modifier placed is actually a dangling modifier. In B, the modifier after comma modifies the verb "slammed", and as per standard written english, any adverbial modifier need not be placed by the side of the phrase it modifies. Hence, my answer B. What is OA??
  19. C cannot be right because "affects" - singular cannot represent "interactions" - plural. In fact C,D,E, all fail on the same criteria. In B, "with interactions" modifies "data" which is wrong. Hence A is right
  20. @rapl: I had the same thing in my mind that "values" is the subject in above case, and "declining" modifies "values" but, if that is the case, then how do you differentiate and consider "raising" as a gerund rather than a modifier to the main subject i.e. "children" in the next sentence. Vipul
  21. Raising children is a very big job. Can somebody explain me, if there should be is/are. If "Raising children" refers to "is", then how can "Declining values" refer to "are"? Waiting for a quick reply.. Regards Vipul
