  1. I need some help evaluating my chances if you guys/gals can. If you don't get invited for the interview in the first time around, do you have chances at all in that school? My thought process was that if a school is looking to admit two, they might interview ten. If you did not even make to the short listed 10 then your probability of getting positive response from the school is basically zero. Do the schools go outside of the first interviewed lot some years?
  2. Thanks, I was asking about the lead time to see whether I will have time to reschedule my work related travel plans if the requested interview time and my travel time coincide. You can reschedule your work related travel plans only so many days ahead.
  3. Thank you Xanthus, What is your opinion on being perceived as less interested if you have to reschedule your interview or if you are not available at the time that adcoms asked for? Do they ask you for your availability or just ask question such as "Are you available 10 AM this Thursday?" Also, how much of the lead time do you get for preparation, reading papers and such?
  4. Good Morning Uchians, As we are approaching the midst of interview season, I just have few questions for you all. Since my work involve heavy travelling, I want to be efficient in managing my work and travel so that I can ace the interviews. What time of the day is mostly preferable to adcoms? Mornings (before 12PM) Afternoons? Also, are the interviews tend to be heavy on any particular days like Mondays? I am thinking may be adcoms like to interview after weekends for some reason. Some insights on this will really help as I definitely don't want to be traveling when that rare interview finally comes in. Also, do adcoms mind rescheduling interviewing? I just don't want them to misunderstand me as being less interested and not making myself openly available. Thank you! BC
  5. Hello, I was wondering what exactly happens in these recruiting events and whether it is worthwhile to attend one of those. Thanks, BC
  6. Since writing samples are optional, I was little concerned about whether I should submit one. I obviously don't have published work, but do you guys think a paper more like a report (e.g. 25 pages) than an original research (meaning I did not derive a model or anything) is worthwhile to submit? Assuming there are no language errors, at what point do you guys think it is counter productive?
  7. Hello all, Since I will be in town where one of my favorite school is with some other business reasons, I am thinking about visiting the school/department while I am there there. I am going to apply there in coming Fall, and it might be too early to talk about any specifics. But I don't want to leave a bad impression either. For veterans who have been there and done that, what are the typical DOs and DON'Ts for this kind of early school visit? Appreciate your help. BC
  8. Thanks! Applying next year, but trying to plan a little ahead!
  9. Thanks YaSvoboden, PhDPlease! I don't know whether this is concentration specific. I was wondering about the finance cocentration. Are you all in Finance? BC
  10. I heard the most of the schools do the phd boot camp in summer before you join the program. Question to the students who have been there done that, when does the boot camp starts and ends (usually)? That can help you plan when you want to actually move to the city. Thanks, BC
  11. Blackwell, Thank you very much for the very informative posts. It is clearly the best thread ever. Quick questions: 1. You did not mention much about the impact of good quantitative background. For example, is going out of the way and take advance math classes like ODE, Analysis, Probability helps? Are those things discussed in the meetings? 2. It seems like just doing a general Research Assistant for a faculty might not be as helpful unless you came up with your own original research using such experience. Am I understanding that correctly? Again, Thanks!
  12. Thanks guys! What stat classes are generally recomended? Did anybody took these classes at A&M? Any recommendations? BC
  13. Hello Everybody, Since the work schedule does not allow much flexibility for me to take the math classes in the classroom settings, I was wondering if there are any math, particularly stat such as stochastic process and such, available through online classes. I know about the online classes at Stanford and some at University of Illinois UC, but I was wondering if you guys can suggest some other programs because the program I just mentioned do not have the classes that I am looking for. I very much appreciate your help! BC
  14. Blackwell, Thanks for the very informative post. Just as Stair... was asking above, 25%ile score means the top 25% candidates that made the first cut have the score above such level, right? For example, if 100 people survived the first screen, 25 people have Q score equal to or more than 81%tile. Are we reading that correct? Or is it that 75 people have Q score equal to or more than 81%tile? Thanks, BC
  15. Thanks rsaylors! That makes sense. Let me see if I can compile that.
  16. Based on the quality of their output, research productivity etc. which PhD in finance programs in US are most under-hyped and most over-hyped in your guys opinion? I think it will help new applicants? Thanks! BC
  17. Thank you very much guys for your valuable time and inputs! Som, I received A, but there was no term paper or anything like that. Quang, I am focusing around T50.
  18. Thanks for your replies! I am going for Finance. Its been seven years since I took the class with Prof. A. He still recognize me very well because I keep in touch with him and go to school once in a blue moon to hire some students. I don't know whether "only because I know him for so long" produces a better (than just another random student type) letter though. With B, its been 10 years since I took the class with him. He still says that I am his most favorite student (at least that is what he says in the emails).
  19. I am going for a finance program and both of these recommenders are not from the field of finance. Please suggest me which might be a better choice for a recommender. A. T10 PhD, faculty at a T50 program, Full Prof, publishing, field: Operations mgmt Concern: Took just one graduate class with him so the letter will be so so good since he is not that familiar with my capabilities. B. Unranked PhD, faculty at tiny unranked state school, Aso Prof. not publishing currently, Field: Information system Merits: Took one regular and two independent research study classes (as undergraduate) with him. He is extremely positive about me; the letters will be outstanding. Now, which one is viewed more positively by adcoms? Any thoughts? Thanks! BC
