  1. Hello, Just a humble opinion, I am afraid that no schools will accept me for PhD in Acc even with my GMAT score 690. My profile is as follows: BSc in Finance, GPA 3.85 n(top 30-40 business school in US) MAcc but in Hong Kong, GPA 3.85 (top school in Hong Kong, or Asia) ACCA affilate CFA level 3 candidate GMAT: 690 TA + some accounting experience. I was aiming at top 70-150 schools, but the professor's response is that "your score is a little bit below what we like" but not out of the range. One of my bachelor professors said that it is a low score. You probably need to retake it... so I think 650...... is not enough, but since you have very strong experience, your situation may be different than mine. Good luck
  2. Hi, Yes, you are right though. Actually getting a teaching job or doing research as an assistant professor in US would be ok. I don't have to be in the very top schools for that (because I am not qualified). Hope that everything goes well.
  3. Thanks, I don't know if the professor I mentioned will write me a reference letter yet because I contacted the acc department of BYU and asked whether I can be their RA, or what I can do for them, but unfortunately I can't provide my service to them. I have not yet asked them to write me a recommendation letter because they don't know me well at this stage. But the professor said "we are here to help you to apply" I feel so warm about that and it is one reason why I love BYU, because even professors (high-ranked people) care about students and are willing to help. I plan on attending their accounting reseach workshop in Oct at BYU (I may fly to BYU for that) 1) I can learn more about research 2) I talk to the professors there. For the professor at finance department of BYU, I am kinda certain that they can write me a recommedation letter because I know some of them better and asked them to do so before when I applied for CUHK. For the professor at CUHK, I think they are willing to write me the letter too (one said he can already". But again, I will retake GMAT! This time I have to get above 700.
  4. Hi phdhope. Thanks. Actually I guess that my professor is not so negative about my profile except for GMAT. He said that my profile still has a great potiential for top school "I think he means top 20 below" but if I want to do so, I have to pull up my GMAT score at least 700, ideally middle of 700. For the name of schools, I guess it is still ok (Maybe I am wrong). Brigham Young University provo should still be ok I guess. For The Chinese University of Hong Kong, again, I guess it is still ok. Although it is an Asian school in Hong Kong, it should be top 5 in Asia for business (I guess) For the Oxford Brookes School... it is just a top up school from my ACCA certificate. I am thinking whether I should show it. I am afraid this kind of top up degree will backfire me, but at least it is still accredited in US. If so... I may think about changing to apply for more backup schools and lower my target to top 50-100 and very few schools from top 20-40. I guess this strategy will help a little. Thanks
  5. Forgot to mention. Actually, University of South Florida, University of Missouri, and some other universities in top 80-100 are still not bad. Of course I will retake GMAT again, but still think that I hope I can at least get in schools like the two I mentioned above
  6. Hi, my profile was posted before. I just did not want people to think why I posted again, so I did not do so. Of course I am very willing to do it again for our discussion: Education Master of Accountancy: The Chinese University of Hong Kong, GPA: 3.85 Bachelor of Science in Finance: BYU provo, GPA 3.82 Bachelor of Science in Applied Accounting: Oxford Brookes University: graduate with first honors (it is just a top up degree from ACCA) Associate of Business Administration from a community college in Utah: GPA: 3.90 GMAT 680: (Q:50 V:32) Professional Certification Association of Chartered Certified Accountants -affiliate (ACCA-which is like a CPA in HK) Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)-affiliate CMA member (but I don't plan to show the adcom about it. Because they may think I don't fit them if I am in kinda in management accounting but my research interest is financial acc and capital market) Practical Publication One Practical Article (not academic research) about financial accounting in HKICPA Magazine Award: Top 20 Affiliate from ACCA -Hong Kong Top 1 in the paper of Financial Reporting in Hong Kong-ACCA Work Experience TA at one of the universities in HK (3 years) Assistant Accountant (8 months) Business Advisor (8 months) The bad thing is that I do not have research experience to compensate for my weak GMAT........... How do you guys think now about what my prof said? Thanks
  7. Re: ACCT PHD Thanks, would you please tell me your GMAT score so that I can kinda have confidence? I understand that it is very confidential but if I know more, I will have more confidence. Re: Isame, Thank you. I think that my professor tried to motivate me by this. I will try to retake GMAT in July. Hopefully, in July, Aug... Until Nov, I can score 700+ in GMAT. Again, I undestand that he is trying to help me rather than scare me off, and I really appreciate that. By the way, do you guys know how many questions more I need to do correctly in Verbal in order to pull my score up from 680 to 700 because I think the Q is Max for me (Q:50). I should focus more on Verbal. Thanks, dude.
  8. Ai.... A little bit sigh... I have sent my resume to my professor and see what he feels about my profile for application for a PhD in Acc. I had three lists. For the first and second lists, it is reasonable that I don't get accepted easily because they are very strong schools but even for the third list..... First list: Harvard, MIT, Wharton, Cornell, NYU........ UCLA, USC, Texas Austin ............. some other top schools Second list: Ohio State, Iowa, Arizona State, Indiana, Washington, Washington st louis and other top 30-top 50 schools But even my third list....... Florida, Florida State, Connecticut, Rugter, South Carolina, North Texas and some other schools around top 60-80. But my professor replies that he doubt that all these schools will accept me with my profile.... so bad. Actually, I appreciate his opinion and help, and he is polite to respond He is giving me some directions and encourage me to retake GMAT. Mine is 680 (Q:50 V:32) (85th) But I just feel sad and want to share it with you guys. What do you guys think? I am just feeling sad about that.
  9. Hello, Thank you for all of your replies. Re: behavioral: Thanks, yes, you are right, so I just want to see whether someone has this experience too like me and share his or her experience. Re: rsaylors: Thank you very much for your information. Re: depreciation: Actually my targets are top 60th. I will also take 70-100 th school as my backups, but don't know why each one is good for backup now. Do you have any idea about it? Thank you all
  10. Hi, Many people have said that schools are most likely to use GMAT as a cutoff rather than GPA or GMAT + GPA. I would like to ask whether it is true (of course not totally or 100% true). Because I think that other parts of my profile should be good, but GMAT is low = (680). I am very afraid that they don't look at my whole profile after they see my GMAT score. Thanks
  11. I would like to ask another question. I did not take many math courses during my bachelor, only college algebra, applied calculus, and business statisitics. Will my lack of math classes seriously put me at disadvantage? because tt seems that lots of applicants with bachelor or master in Math or Physics or major in business but very strong math background.......... Their math skills are of course very good........... I am scared by them...... Will my Econ courses taken during my bachelor compensate for it a lot? 1) Micro Econ(year 2), A, Macro Econ(year 2) A, Econ in market system (year 3) A, Managerial Econ (year 3) A, Econ in banking and money, (year 4) A-. Hope that it will help a little. Thanks
  12. Hello, Sorry, please ignore the dip course I listed. I was too aggressive. It is impossible for me to do so.
  13. Hi all, I would like to add the following education to my profile for evaulation diploma in math for graduates(University of London) graduate with distinction: courses taken are 1)abstract math 2)advanced calculus 3)advanced linear algebra 4)advanced stat 1 5)advanced stat 2 6)advanced math analysis 7)optimisation theory with this dip, can I have much more chances to get in the top 20-40 thanks
  14. HiHI, I suddenly come up with an idea. Instead of saying the following: want to do a PhD at the University of Iowa for many reasons. I have heard about your PhD program in Accounting from my business school professors and am impressed with the emphasis placed on technical and analytical skills, strong financial accounting research orientation, and rigorous research methodology. Your university's strengths in research on empirical financial accounting fit my research interests and background. I am also attracted by the faculty's reputation for excellent teaching and challenging coursework. I think that I might find the publication of the U in my the field and say that I am interested because I saw the article from XXXX academic journal and think that I can learn the research skills like that, and the article impressed me very much, and talks about something from the journal. I think it should be more specific about why I want to join the university What do you think? Thanks
  15. Thanks What if I rephase my research topic to "Empirical Financial Research on the Relationship Between Accounting Information And Capital Market" Is this topic enough? or do I have to be even more specific? If so, I think it will become a research proposal. For example, "Empirical Financial Accounting Research on the Relationship between Fair Value Accounting of Derivates and Valuation of Capital Market Security" Thank you, dude
