  1. Helllo Shekhar, My advice , prepare with the official guide - cover to cover . A little also depends on chance , so leave it at that .But do you bit with the official guide. ANirban
  2. Hi, I wanted to share thoughts and insights on the HAAS EWMBA admissions for Fall 2005 . I plan to do the submission before the deadline tomorrow .I am a little nervous because this is the only program I am applying to . Wanted to hear from folks about their plans for completing prereqs etc. A
  3. Hi David, Can you let me know about my chances for the part time MBA program at UC Berkeley HAAS. My Stats : Indian Male , Age 29 GMAT : 720 ( both quant and verbal above the 80 %) GPA : 3.4 Work Exp : ~7 years , (4 of them in the US) , working in cutting edge technologies , but mostly as a techie . Under Grad : BS in Electronics and Comunications . I am yet to take the TOEFL , but I expect a good score in TOEFL . I have done some volunteer work as well . Will the fact that I have mostly worked as a techie be taken as a negative point for me ? What are the points going in my favour and what are against me ? Thanks
  4. Just took the test this morning , and boy am I please with my score .My goal was 700+ and I don’t have any complaints at all . First of all ,a million thanks to Erin !!! . Erin , your site is the best when it comes to resources on the net . Many thanks to all the tireless contributors of this site as well . I made my first attempt in the month of May .I had not heard about the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] , and came across this site just 2 or three days before my test date .The preparation material I had then : 1. Kaplan GMAT 2. Princeton Review 3. Power Prep Well , I paid for it : 630 (V31-Q45-essay-5), and I was devastated .Then I read th the experiences of folks on this site , and realized that a second effort might not be a bad idea .So I got hold of the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and started my preparations after a week’s time . My 2nd attempt preps : First a little background . I have a full time job , and hence the four months between the two attempts , and being a science grad , quant was not a challenge for me . I used the score tracker xls uploaded by Ursula , many thanks to you too . With [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] I went though the verbal first (The SC , RC and CR) and then the Maths (PS ,DS) bit. Everyday I did sets of 10 questions each (10 each of SC,RC…) and under timed conditions .( I downloaded a desktop stopwatch software – there are many free wares available on the net ) . I was very meticulous about marking the right and the wrong choices in the xls .I had finished the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] in about two months. I also got a hold of the Kaplan 800 , and solved the problems in it .Somehow , I felt that Kaplan 800 had some weird CR and SC problems .Many of them didn’t feel right , but it could be only my problem . After finishing the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] .I listed out all my wrong choices, and tried to solve these questions again under timed conditions. This was a big eye-opener , I realized , that the wrong choices I made the second time around were the same as those I had got wrong the first time .I went back and kept going over those questions until I had either mastered the concept or memorized them J. Its hard to emphasize that [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] is a very important study guide indeed. I spent the last 2 weeks of my preparation going through all the TestMagic CR and SC questions. I did a couple of trend analysis of my own and found that a couple of contributors were not only right most of the time but also posted excellent explanations (Ursula !Your name pops up once again) . I used the ‘Find more posts by xxxxxx’ option (You get that by clicking on the name of a contributor) and concentrated more on the posts by these folks . PP1: 650 Kaplan Test1: 570 Kaplan Test 2:550 Kaplan Test3: 610 PP2:770 (after having finished the OG) I had a weird experience on my second test attempt . Or rather my first-second test attempt .I had reserved the day after the Labour-day weekend .Well , I show up at the appointed hour , all tensed and worked up , expecting to show my ID and start banging out my essays , ….but surprise , surprise , the test center did not receive my reservation notification .The next one hour was spent making frantic phone calls to the Prometric help desk .Evidently , it was because of some technical glitch .There was this unctuous test center employee who tried his level best to cool me down , and I feel bad when I think of it now , I was hardly returning his assuring smiles .Since it was half an hour past my appointed hour , they gave me the choice of re-scheduling my test.I rescheduled it for the same time next day .Folks , please make it a point to call up your test center and confirm your appointment .Who wants to go through the hell of prolonging this test-torture . On the night before my test (the final test!) , I followed my ordinary daily routine.Ran for a couple of miles in the evening , like I always do , had a light dinner.Had a hard time falling asleep , I have written many exams , but as far as I can remember , the GMAT test is the most scare inducing test of them all . The Actual Test . AWA: I got one of those thinker type analysis of an issue question ,and I banged out some stuff using my own templates .The Ananlysis of an Argument was a breeze .Lets see what the official essay scores say . QUANT: The quant part started out easy .I got two probability questions and one perm/combination type .Not too difficult . I had to guess on at least three questions , did not guess blindly though .I got one really tough geometry problem , one on which I wasted about five minutes and could not figure out the answer .And I ended my solving the last five questions in five minutes ,I guessed on most of those .At the end I was not too happy about the quant part .But I tried my best to push away that thought before starting the next section .The trip to the rest room helped a lot in doing this . VERBAL I had better confidence going into the verbal section this time .I got two ‘bold-face’ reasoning type questions !and one really long RC passage ,either my mind had stopped working when I confronted that RC passage , or perhaps the questions were really tough , I was not sure of a single answer of that RC passage. I think I came across a couple of SC questions which I had seen some where before .(Maybe in my last test 4 months ago ?..but what are the chances of that happening ..!!) …I found this strange . Took all the optional 5 minutes breaks. In the end , after filling up the ETS survey , which never seemed to come to an end , I was having second thoughts about pressing the ‘report scores’ button .In fact I had the mouse cursor hovering around the ‘cancel test’ button for a while .But then I just took a deep breadth , and did the right thing :..was more that glad after I saw the score on the screen .720 , was more than what I had expected . final thoughts .Time management is the key to the GMAT , and if there is a trick to staying calm on this test , I am all ears , I think I got psyched up on both my attempts .Only that I had a good nights sleep before my second one .
  5. the problem with B is that 'which' refers to 'the country' , resulting in that "somehow the contry ranges ..."
  6. Hello Spidey : the only problem with this choice is that it talks about 'effect on distribution' of oil and gas. Are we to assume that distribution is a factor in their price .I was assuming that only the quantity consumed was the factor . Thats way B sounded better
  7. The word last year is somewhat ambiguous though . I means 2009 in , or the previous year in the laterpart of the sentense while intheearlier part it refers to the year before 'this' year
  8. But why cant the fire have resulted from the war . A sounds better to me
  9. D: actually weakens the argument , it says that its not the seatbelt design which causes more injuries in Europe but the statistics . A on the other hand does NOT seem to weaken the argument that seatbelt design saves more Europeans , I would go with A, whats the right answer ?
  10. I solved it another way , is it right ? 3x + 7y is divisibe by 11 , by substituting some values for x and y to get a multiple of 11, I get (5,1) By plugging in (5,1) for x,y in the answer choices , only D gives me 11 .
  11. I think you are , for case 1) b the above equality holds only is b>=8
  12. Hi, I am looking for the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. Has anyone compared them ?Any info appreciated . Erin , which one would you recommend ? Thanks

  14. comments welcome : Many people believe that in any business its is better to have a manager with strong leadership skills , however , I believe that it is a manager with expertise and work experience in a particular field who is better capable of leading the business .In this discussion I shall present arguments to support my opinion . One reason for my belief is that ,it is a common observation that subordinates and co-workers tend to respect a manager more if they perceive him or her to be an expert in the field. For example , when Apple's founder Steve Jobs ,was replaced by a seasoned manager , Apple could not roll out any innovative product ,as a consequence of which its profits declined .The company started making profits only after its founder Steve Jobs, an expert in his field , was brought back . Another reason for my belief is that every business has a personality of its own , which can only be learned by a long association with it.And hence it is important that its leadership have a long work experience in that organization .Like GE's celebrated former CEO , Jack Welch ,who had been employed by GE for most of his working years . Some might argue that qualities of leadership are the only attributes needed to lead an organization .However ,I believe that ,leadership is one important attribute along with others such as gaining the trust , respect and the confidence of the co-workers of a business , that are necessary for successfully managing a business. In conclusion , I believe that a manager with expertise and work experience in a particular business is better suited to lead that business than one with just strong leadership skills.
  15. please provide your comments : Some people believe that organizations themselves should assume the responsibilities for establishing their own standards and regulations , however, I believe that the government should be responsible for establishing and enforcing the standards for businesses and other organizations . One reason for my belief is that business organizations are primarily driven by the motive of accumulating profits , and establishing standards and regulations , which do not add to the profits, are secondary concerns for them .The occurrence of Salmonella bacteria outbreaks was common place in the fast food industry in the early sixties .They resulted primarily from the shoddy food handling practices , and were finally brought under control by the government setting up strict food hygiene standards . Another reason for my belief is that standards and regulations become meaningful only when they are imposed by an impartial body which holds credibility with business organizations .For example , regulations created by one business organization may be considered by another as providing undue business advantage to the creator of the standards. However ,the government can become the impartial regulatory body , which business organizations can trust. Finally , a regulatory body should have the means to impose the standards that it creates .Only the government , with the vast manpower and the finances at its disposal ,has the means and the finances to impose the regulations . Some might argue that the governmental regulations might impede the competitiveness of the businesses and hence harm them .Therefore it is very important that the regulations are created by keeping in mind the interests of both the businesses and the society . In conclusion , I believe that the society would benefit more if the government takes over the responsibility of establishing and imposing the standards and regulations . Some people believe that organizations themselves should assume the resposibilities for eastablishing their own standards and regulations , however,I believe that the government should be responsible for eastablishing and enforcing the standards for businesses and other organizations .
