A programming course at a community college isn't going to send any signal about your ability to conduct research. But, you will find knowing a programming language or two very useful in research.

My thoughts exactly. I doubt that TM helps with the GRE that much, yet TM users report higher GRE scores than schools do. It's likely that the portion of applicants with high GRE scores choose to TM.

Sorry, I meant to say publications matter more on the job market than they do when applying to school.

That's for admissions. The OP is worried about publications on the job market, where they matter more than your school.

I email the DGS last week and was told I was on the waitlist. Did anyone get the first round admission letter from UNC? I saw a few admits in Jan/Feb that seemed to come from people with connections to the department.

So NCSU is good in a field that you're not interested in, you don't get enough support from the professors, and you're not happy with the atmostphere. Do you think that you can put together a decent JMP that leads to a job you want at a department like that? I know it sucks to lose a year, but if it improves the quality of your work, then it might be worth it. What kind of job do you want? Is it more in line with placements from NCSU or placements from Pitt?

How many people do you think have "top 10 quality" raw ability, but don't get into the top 10?

I'd take the guaranteed Ph.D. offer over a potential jump into the top 20 that may not happen. What if you do the masters and then get shut out of the top 20 again, or even shut out of WUSTL on the second try?

I think this is a good idea. It would be nice to have a thread of acceptances and rejections, but from the supply side instead of the demand side. For instance, caledonian2011 might post No real need for him to post that he's still considering MIT et al. until he's actually made a decision. Over time, we'd get a look at when applicants make their decisions, which would provide some information to people on the waitlist. What do you guys think?

There's a post on GC that UNC has made funding decisions? Can anyone confirm that? Who else is waiting to hear from UNC?

I'm also waiting on UNC, and also waiting on an email response from the assistant to the DGS.

I'm not an ethnic minority. I would attend school in the U.S.

Does anyone know of a funding/scholarship programs, outside of departmental funding, with a late deadline? I need to wrangle up some funding, or I likely can't start a program in the fall.
