  2. Hi!! I'm worried a lot.I completed my B.Tech in India seven yrs. ago and I have been entagled with marriage and family. Now I want to pursue M.S in Computer Science in U.S.I recently gave GRE and got 1140 score(450-verbal,690-quant.). The thing that worries me most is "Resume,Recommendation Letters and Statement of Purpose''.What professor remembers me after 6yrs. of college and from where should I get recommendation letters? Is my chance of admission in to a university null without these?
  3. Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem. It’s not always possible to predict what contributes to the betterment of larger society.Few researches though seem insane have resulted in great impact on human society and vice versa. So,it’s not always possible to constrain whether scholars or researches should follow their interests or public interests. If we dissect the positive side of the above statement, when scholars and researchers follow their own interests they commit themselves more in what they are interested in.And,commitment to leads to better results. For example, consider the discovery of atomic theory.Did anyone assesss what impact it’ll have on modern science when it was discovered?Perhaps, scientists like Robertson were even considered mad for researching on something that is impossible to see using even thousand microscopes. But,it is through their personal interest that they persevered these painstaking experiments and discovered atoms and their properties.Their discovery laid the seminal grounds in developing the modern science and thereby the evolution of modern society. But if we consider the negative side of the author’s statement, there is risk of wasting funds on scholars idiosyncratic research. For instance,it possible that a scholar might be interested in analyzing something that is trivial to the society like analyzing ‘new methods of destruction’.This has less impact on society and is even dangerous. So instead of wasting time on such dangerous experiments it can be used on some other more useful fields. Moreover,if it involves government funds then it is waste to spend lucre on such descructive mattersFor instance consider osama bin laden, though he is a scholar he used his knowledge in destructing the two famous towers called “world trade towers” and also many innocent lives for his own interests. Therefore,a scholar or a researcher should consider the validity or genuinity of his research and thereby proceed in it or either reprieve it,if it is malicious to society. To recapitulate the above analysis,a scholar can follow his or her own interests as long as it doesn’t result in violence and destruction for the human society.
  4. "The true value of a civilization is reflected in its artistic creations rather than in its scientific accomplishments." The statement states that a civilization’s true value is reflected more in artistic creations rather than in its scientific accomplishments.Well,it’s not easy to conjecture in what aspects civilization is more reflected. Some argue that civilization is more reflected in the artistic creation while some argue that it is the scientific accomplishments which mirror the civilization. In general,if we consider the latest trends of observing civilization it is evincive that scientific accomplishments have been the ground for understanding the civilization more compared to the artistic creations. It is the progress in technology and inventions that are considered as mark of civilization. For instance, consider tribal population found in the deep forests of the world.Though they have their own art and lead relatively pure life they are regarded as uncivilized people because they are still ignorant of science and lead a simple life that’s at parity of our primordial ancestors.Whereas, the other regions where people kill each other for selfish purposes are regarded as more civilized like western and eastern countries because they are far more advanced in science accomplishments like ‘landing on the moon, discovering new medicines for unknown diseases, refined way of covering their bodies with clothes, polished way of acting and communicating’. On the other hand, the significance of artistic creations in knowing the established culture and traditions of a region can’t be ignored.Though science reflects how developed and refined their culture is,the actual traditions and customs of civilization is found in the artistic creations. For example,if one watches a certain regional movies like Korean movies,he/she gets a little sense of their customs or traditions like how they dress, how they communicate, on the whole their true identity.Another example, consider Egypt art.Through the fresco on the walls of the Egyptian mummies scientists have come know much clearly the ancestrial civilization of Egypt such as the system of governance, dressing, customs, dance art etc,. One can’t get familiarized such effectively just by knowing their scientific accomplishments. In summary, every region or country has its own scientific accomplishment which contributes to the major glory of the already established culture and traditions of a civilization. But,to know the true identity of the civilization one should observe the artistic creations of their region.
  5. The way students and scholars interpret the materials they work with in their academic fields is more a matter of personality than of training. Different interpretations come about when people with different personalities look at exactly the same objects, facts, data, or events and see different things. The article states that the way an object or data is used depends on the personality of the user may it be a student or a scholar. The statement is quite concordable since different people see the exact same object or an event in different ways. The statement can be bolstered with several examples. For instance, consider a “tape recorder”,different people use it for different purposes like an industrious student uses it to record the teachings in a class while a jaunty student uses it for entertainment.Likewise,if we consider “computers “ the way it is used by students and scholars in academics differs substantially. While a student uses it for mostly browsing data, social networking or entertainment, a scholar uses it more for research and educational purposes. As the statement emphasizes, though the usage of materials depends mostly on personality once a student is trained how to use it for its intended purpose,it may have considerable effect on the way it is used.To quote an example, consider a computer graphics student. Before training, the student may watch a movie like “Avatar” with great amazement, awe and fun.But after training, his perception may change in watching the similar kind of movies in a way that now he tries to concentrate more on what kind of technology they used, how it is used, whether he can do a movie with such amazing graphics using his knowledge in training etc,.But here too personality plays its role as if the student is not serious about his training he may still watch this kind of movies for fun.Training has little impact on his perception. It is assentive as the article states that different people see the same event in different ways.If a bottle filled with water to half its capacity is intercepted by few as ‘half-empty’,the same bottle is perceived by other few as ‘half-filled’.As the article states it depends on positive and negative attitudes of the people in interpreting the same thing. Therefore, from the above analysis it is approble what article states that “though training has impact ,it depends on the personality how the trained knowledge or material or event is used by different people”.
  6. People who pursue their own intellectual interests for purely personal reasons are more likely to benefit the rest of the world than are people who try to act for the public good A person who pursues their own intellectual interests for purely personal reasons is more likely to benefit the world because he commits himself for what he is interested in.Commitment leads to hardwork and perseverance through which many a dividends can be obtained that benefit the world. Many personalities, who are coeval or non-contemporary can be cited as an example who benefited world through the perserverence of their personal interests. For instance, take the example of Galileo, what made him discover that Sun is the centre of the universe and not earth? The world of that ethos, was so nonchalant and contemptious about such science knowledge. But that didn’t dissuade Galileo from pursuing his experiments and infer the truth about the solar system. It’s the personal and intellectual interests of Galileo that impelled him to pursue such experiments.Another example,Bill gates though he was a student of chemistry it’s his interest in computers that made him to come up with well renowned software windows for PC’s.Had he not had interest in computers he would have been ended up researching in a chemistry lab.Thousands of examples like these can be cited that bolster the statement that personal interests do more likely benefit the world compared to people who act according to public interests. Having quoted that,it’s not always the case that the world is benefited through the perseverance of one’s own interests.Take for instance, the incident of 911.Due to the orthodox and misanthropist interests of a contingency group many innocent people lost their life which had tremendous traumatic effect on the minds of people and relations of the world. It can be inferred from such incidents that sometimes if it’s not in the benefit of the rest of the world,it’s good to not pursue one’s own interests. Here we can feel the importance of giving up one’s own interests for the welfare of the world. There are such personalities in history of world, who abdicated their own personal interests and contributed for the benefit of the world.Gandhiji is one such personality, who renounced his barrister career and all comforts of life in order to fight for the freedom of India from Colonial rule.Mother Teresa is another such philanthropist who gave up everything and committed her whole life to serve the needy and oppressed. But,it requires a lot of commitment , endurance and compassion towards mankind to let go of one’s own personal interests for the welfare of the world. The proportion of such kind of personalities in today’s world is very scarp. Therefore,it can be summarized through the events of the history of the world that persuing of personal interests might not always contribute to the benefit of the rest of the world as is in the case who act for the public good.In any case, personal or public actions should confluence with the welfare of the world.
