  1. Hi asad100 and ikhlas, thanks for your posts, asad100, let me answer your Qs; a) I just made the powerprep the day before the test and the scores were really close to the actual scores I got. I didn't want to try it before just to have the experience fresh before the test and I think it worked, at least for me. b) For me, the best way to study for it, was watching and listening a lot of american tv shows, like Letterman's and things like that, (without the close captioning of course) I think it helped me a lot, and it is much more enjoyable than the .wav files found on the internet; I think actually it is tougher to try to understand an entire tv show than to understand the listening section of the TOEFL. c) Regarding the reading section, well it helped me a lot to dismiss the instructions before the section, and as I wrote before, start by scrolling down the scroll bar as soon as it starts and press the continue button, that way, you'll gain some precious seconds and you can read your first question and see if the passage gives you the answer while you read it, this was something that really helped me, I did it in all the 4 topics and I always found the answer while reading. and ikhlas Well, I think the listening section is actually easier than what it seems. For instance, on the powerprep I did the night before the exam, I got 28 and 29 in this section, but I think that if you do the powerprep one day before it feels exactly as the actual TOEFL, the screen is exactly as the one on the PP even the pictures of the students and the professors everything, so when you start the test take a few minutes to relax before starting, I did that when I got to the part where you can adjust the volume on your headphones, since I knew that on that exact moment the clock was not clicking, I just relaxed tryied to familiarize with the volume and the voice and when I felt comfortable and ready, then I started. I don't think this section is about memory, since the dialogues are short, you jjust have to have the general idea. I remember that I found a website with listening tests that where really tough, much more tougher than the actual test, and their questions were based on a lot of specific data like hours, with minutes and exact street addresses' names, but that is not the case on the TOEFL they did not presented any tricky questions like that, but I think that these tests helped me to get prepared and focus on the topic before answering, but as I told you this Qs are more difficult, if you want to take try them this is the link http://www.esl-lab.com/index.htm Well, best of the luck on your test !!!!
  2. Hello everyone, I just wanted to post my score here. Since I received so many tips and help from this forum, I think this is the least we can do in order to say thanks to Eryn and the rest of the forum active users. Well these were my scores: Listening: 30 Structure - Writing: 11 - 28 Reading: 28 TOTAL 240 - 287 I only studied for the TOEFL for 10 days, specially by reading posts from this forum and some links I got from here. I want to thanks also Mr Aeoria for his contibutions and this post: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11043 I almost commited the same error but he saved me with his advice. I found the test a little easier than expected but the thing is that I have been studying for the GMAT for a month now and it really helped me. A few tips I used (maybe you can use them too): - Have a really big cup of coffee at breakfast ... it really help your brain cells to be more active. - Have at least 8 hrs of good sleep the night before the test. - Do at least one Powerprep test the day before the test ... it really help you to maintain fresh your test tactics. - One hour before the test eat something really sweet ... it is a good source of glucose to your neurons ... thy are going to need it - If you use eyeglasses or contact lenses, use your contacts ... I used my eyeglasses and in the middle of the listening section, I had to take them off because the headphones that they provide you, were killing me as they were pressing against my eyeglasses and my ear. - In the reading section, start by scrolling down the scroll bar as soon as it starts and press the continue button, that way, you'll gain some precious seconds and you can read your first quiestion and see if the passage gives you the answer while you read it, this was something that really helped me, I did it in all the 4 topics and I always found the answer while reading. I finished that section 18 minutes ahead, so I had the time to go back and double check every answer (I still don't know how I got 28/30 I was sure I was going to get all the 30, but well that's life!) - Since I finished earlier the reading section, that also gave me some time to plan ahead the next section - the one that really scared me - the Writing section, I did what someone wrote in one of the posts, I wrote down on the scratch paper: introduction, support 1 - examples, support 2 - examples, support 3 - examples and conclusion. and when I started I just filled the blanks with my ideas and then typed the essay, and that also helped me a lot. - Take with you something to eat and drink to the testing center, you'll need them in the 5 minutes break, in my case, I presented the test in Colombia and the prometric center where I took the test, had no cafeteria, so the couple of things I brought were very useful. Ok that's all, again thanks to all of you for your postings and great tips, specially Eryn for this great forum. if I can be of further help just feel free to ask. Good luck in your test !!!

  5. Thank you all for your posts, The correct answers are : I - c) = 30 II - a) = 1/17 bazooka76, please, explain your approach!? I still don't have clear why you stated this: "P(getting a pair of cards from a pack of cards ie, from 13 sets (1 to A)) = 13*(4/52)*(3/51) = 1/17"? Rob, your answer makes a lot of sense, thanks. Dharmin, You got them both right, can you explain me how did you arrive to "4C2 / 52C2" on the second one? and by the way thank you for posting also at the gmatclub.

  8. A certain truck traveling at 55 miles per hour gets 4.5 miles per gallon of diesel fuel consumed. Traveling at 60 miles per hour, the truck gets only 3.5 miles per gallon. In a 500 mile trip, if the truck used a total of 120 gallons of diesel fuel and traveled part of the trip at 55 miles per hour and the rest at 60 miles per hour, how many miles did it traveled at 55 miles per hour? a- 140 b- 200 c- 250 d- 300 e- 360 the answer is e
  9. A hiker walked for two days. On the second day the hiker walked 2 hours longer and at an average speed 1 mile per hour faster than he walked on the first day. If during the two days he walked a total of 64 miles and spent a total of 18 hours walking, what was his average speed on the first day? a- 2mph b- 3mph c- 4mph d- 5mph e- 6mph answer is b
  10. Shivani, I think it's the opposite, 280 is the only one divisible by 7 and by 8. ;)
  11. Hi Erin, I am mew here can you take a look at my first try? “The secret of business is to know something that nobody else knows.” Explain what you think the above quotation means and discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with it. Support your position with relevant reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading. The extent to which the main element in a business is to know something that nobody else knows is a complex and controversial issue. On one side, the factor of knowing something that nobody else knows does not means that this knowledge is the key to success, but on the other side, in every business, if you know something your competitor does not, gives you a competitive advantage. On balance, however, I believe that the knowledge of something does not make a business by itself. One strong reason that supports this position is the history of businesses, where we can find illustrative examples where knowing something did not implied that it could grow a business. For example, for many years people knew how to prepare home-made hamburgers, but that knowledge itself did not bring to the market companies like macdonald’s, it was not only the knowledge of fast food concept but how to implement it, that created such companies. Another argument that buttresses the orientation of the statement is the fact that business success is not only centered on something you know and the rest of the competitors don’t. For instance, if you have a secret formula to prepare a soup, that does not means that when you open a restaurant, selling your soup, the success of your restaurant resides only on the knowledge of your secret formula, if you don’t advertise your restaurant, or if you give a bad customer service it is most probably that your formula won’t rescue your business from closing. Finally another reason for my view is that according to my experience, if you know something that anyone knows, but you do not know how to capitalize it as a business is exactly as not knowing it. In sum, the knowledge by itself is not the only keypoint for a business. A business is created with more resources than just the knowledge of something unknown to others. TIME 29:18 WORDS 322
