Hi - I found these forums while I was looking online for some info about the GRE. I am so lucky I found it because I'm planning to apply to grad school this winter. I'm American but I live outside the States (in the Middle East now) so I really feel that there is a lack of support system around, like I'm all on my own in the application process. So thanks in advance for any advice.
Basically I'll give an overview of my situation and please share any advice about how I can work to make my application as strong as possible. What should I focus on, what my goals should be, etc. I'm going to apply for programs that deal with IR, international poli-sci, or diplomacy. My dream school would be Georgetown, probably something in the School of Foreign Service, but I'm interested in more than one program there. I am terrible at economics so no development programs for me
I'm 28, have an undergrad degree from Northwestern class '05 (no special honors or anything) :(
undergrad GPA 3.53 (worried this is low)
I speak fluent Spanish and Bulgarian, and am low-conversational in Arabic (working on that now)
I served in the peace corps in Bulgaria, mostly teaching English but also development projects (2.5 years)
I live in Damascus, Syria now, I teach English part time and also do volunteer work with Iraqi refugees - getting them scholarships to American universities (3 years)
I am preparing for the GRE and in my last practice test my V was 630 and my Q was 580 (but the time limit kills me for the quantative - for verbal it's not a problem.)
So thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to read this and let me know what shape you think I'm in and what's going to hurt me and what I should focus on
THANKS
Mary
