  1. A fairly recent posting on the NBER site for a JPAL position. Anyone know how long we could expect to wait until we hear back?
  2. So in an effort to improve my application, I'm looking for RA openings. I have tried the obvious avenues: the Fed, World Bank, IMF, Urban Institute, JLAB, NBER postings, etc. Are there any that I have overlooked that would be good experience? Are these positions as competitive as graduate schools? JLAB and the Fed in particular seem super competitive. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  3. Anyone know how useful these positions are? Jobs - Junior Professional Associates Further, does anyone know exactly how competitive the positions are and/or how long notifications take after the application is sent?
  4. I do remember that stipulation from the application, though I am not completely sure.
  5. No I just sent in the application a few weeks ago and haven't heard anything back yet. Is that an implied rejection?
  6. San fran, Chicago, and new York research assistant/associate positions.
  7. I applied for a position a couple weeks ago and have not heard back yet. I believe they said the applications were being taken on a "rolling basis" so there was no deadline. Do you have any insight on what this means? Is there any way to follow up on the status of my application. These RA jobs sound perfect!
  8. Institution: University of Texas Program: Economics PhD Decision: Rejected Funding: NA Notification Date: 3/8/2012 Notified Through: Checked Website Posted on GC: Nope Comments: Well, looks like I might have to wait another year to go to grad school...
  9. So I just got word about my UT app via the website. Check at your own discretion...
  10. Anyone want to infer anything about the NYU calls made today? I got a missed call from White Plains, NY yesterday and I can only dream that it was a professor...
  11. How long do we reckon the Waitlist is for Davis? Also, does it help to reply to their email gushing about how interested you still are or does that wreak of desperation??
  12. Institution: Minnesota Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Rejection Funding: NA Notification Date: 03/02/12 Notified Through: Checked website Posted on GC: No Comments: A stretch anyways Institution: UC Davis Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Waitlist Funding: Not gonna happen Notification Date: 03/02/12 Notified Through: Email Posted on GC: No Comments: Kind of encouraging?
  13. What's your source? Does this mean that any funding offers will be in the mail and all other other unfunded acceptances are still to come?
  14. Speaking as someone who is in the US and in the same time zone as Madison, I can confirm that is indeed Sunday.
  15. So are we going to assume that the UT admits on here are just a "first wave" and if we haven't heard or had anything posted on our status page it doesn't mean rejection necessarily?
  16. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: MA Economics Single Honours from top Scottish University (MA technically but pretty much recognized as a bachelor's) Undergrad GPA: On a weird 20-point scale, but essentially translates to 3.65-ish Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 162Q (87%), 157V (77%), 4.0 AWA Math Courses: MV Calc, Advanced Statistics, Econometrics, Advanced Econometrics Econ Courses (grad-level): N/A Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro to Macro, Intro to Micro, Intermediate Micro, Intermediate Macro, Advanced Micro, Advanced Macro, Economics of Social Life, Labour Economics, Economics of Innovation, Economic Analysis (advanced course combining game theory and macro growth theory), Contemporary Issues, Law and Economics, Dissertation in Economics Other Courses: Some, but only economics classes taken junior and senior year Letters of Recommendation: 3 professors, two of which I built close relationships with and the other was my assigned advisor. Research Experience: 12,000 word dissertation on inter-industry wage differentials, competitive internship at education reform think tank, other research internship at policy think tank Teaching Experience: Currently a middle school math tutor Research Interests: Labour economics, economic history SOP: Pretty good, talked about my demonstrated love of the subject and how I did a "single-honours" degree in undergraduate to take the maximum number of economics courses possible and to be able to write a substantial dissertation. Concerns: GRE quant score could be better, grades could always be better and I'm not sure how they'll interpret my university's weird grading scale. Recommendations were from professors who knew me well but aren't too well-published. I took all the possible econ courses I could, but was it enough math?Applying to: PhD: Vanderbilt (rejected), UC-Davis, UCSD, U Texas, Minnesota, NYU, Michigan
  17. So people have heard back from UT and UC Davis...is it assumed that those are just for the highest caliber candidates and the rest of us who haven't heard still have reason to be semi-optimistic?
  18. Pretty sure that means you got in as long as you finish your bachelor's degree?
  19. Looking ahead, think they'll all be closed on President's Day? I'm sensing either nothing happening today or a massive rush in a couple hours.
  20. So how common is it to get in somewhere much higher ranked than somewhere you were rejected from? I was rejected from a school I really was sure I'd get into and I'm pretty nervous I won't get in anywhere now.
  21. Institution: Vanderbilt Program: PhD Economics Decision: Rejected Funding: N.A. Notification Date: 2/10/2012 Notified through: E-mail Posted on GC: No Comments: Really, really, really disappointed. Considered it one of the "sure-thing" schools I applied to. No idea what happened. Feel like an NYU, Michigan, or Minnesota is definitely impossible now...
  22. What's the earliest we should start hearing back from anywhere? Does it just depend on how early you apply?
  23. I wrote in many places that Minnesota's deadline was January 5th but checking the site today it apparently was December 15th. Did anyone else make the same mistake I did??
