We seem to have stumbled on an old vs new school argument. Some of us who've used social media to successfully build and navigate our careers will use those skills in our academic careers. Phdhope, you made some great points. But, given all the tools we have at our disposal it is a shame that most of our work is done in a vacuum. I just don't agree with you that "Most of the benefits alleged could be better achieved simply by continuing with the old paradigm."

THANK YOU, Synthesis! I was beginning to worry that I'd inadvertently fallen into the tool category. Doingfine, my post in no way suggests an obsession with personal branding. After you're introduced to or meet someone the first thing they'll do is google your name. Most people by now know they don't want pictures of them hitting the bong at the last frat party to be the first thing to come up. However, managing your career is not just about damage control. I'm coming from a corporate & entrepreneurial background, and have worked really hard at making sure that my name is closely associated with my professional expertise. I've had a couple of wonderful opportunities fall into my lap largely due to smart career/reputation management. Speaking and teaching opportunities that I could never have planned on. As I leave my current profession to build a career in academia you can say I need to redefine my brand/reputation. This is not about looking for consulting jobs. I plan on a successful academic career, but I think social media is an untapped resource. Synthesis, thanks again. You've done a wonderful job articulating my thoughts.

I can't tell if you're being serious, sarcastic, facetious, or what. But your response did make me chuckle so i'll take a stab at it. I am not sure how much leeway you'd allow before declaring someone a tool. But I was not thinking of blogging at "stinkybeagleMNGMTexpert.com" if that's what you were referring to. :pirate: There are ton of well written blogs out there and they play a part in creating their owners' brand. Take Management Craft for example, it provides readers with information while building Lisa Haneberg's personal brand.

I have a BA and MA in international business and also teach it at the UG level. For a long while I was convinced that a doctoral program in IB was the way to go. After talking to several faculty members at different schools I concluded that it was not a good career move. First, a lot of b-schools are doing away with their IB departments because businesses no longer operate in a domestic versus IB world. Business is international! Also, saying you have a PhD in IB says nothing of your expertise. Is it the management side that interests you, economics, finance? You see where I am going with this. I think you should think about doingfine's response and if the PhD still interest you try to pinpoint exactly what interests about IB and get a phd in that. You can always tailor your research to have a strong Int'l focus. Good luck!

Is anyone out there thinking about or have started a blog as a way to build/establish their personal brand. I'm not referring to a blog about your daily activities and experiences as a doctoral student. Rather, a blog devoted solely to building your reputation as an expert in your field. I'll be starting this fall in OB/Management and I'm thinking a weekly blog based on whatever interesting paper I happen to be reading would be a fun endeavor. (Obviously this would have to be under my real name if it's to have a "personal brand" benefit.) Any thoughts?

BWAC, vent away! I was in a similar situation and posted about it on this site. In my case, I received the offer, but had 10 days to accept. In the end, I got an extension (after 1st being rejected). But the situation totally turned me off to that program and my biggest fear was that i'd have to go to a school that was bullying me. This program does not sound like the right program for you. You'll get in to the right program for you. Good luck on your remaining interviews.

Everything you've typed suggests that you'd be more productive at INSEAD (you cited faculty & cultural fit and placement). We could argue all day about which one is more prestigious CBS or INSEAD. However, prestige, IMO, is relevant as far as it can get me into the types of school that I want to land at in 5 years. INSEAD's placement is one of the best. So, I am not sure why you would see CBS as that much more prestigious. Either way, a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS is in order. :triumphant: Best of luck w/whichever program you decide.

I would check to see if at least one of them is willing to change. (Try calling the one you're least excited about first, perhaps.) It would be tough to be in top form after a red eye. There's no harm in asking and only upside, IMO. Congrats, BTW.

I could be mistaking, but the agreement seems to only apply to offers of admission. Don't know about the OP, but my offer stated that my funding/fellowship is off the table if I didn't respond within 10 days. If I took longer I would still be accepted but w/no money. From my understanding of the agreement, they're technically not in violation.

I don't think that's always the case. Some schools might have a strict protocol that they'll not deviate from. In my case, one of the schools I contacted did tell me that they'd already invited people out to interviews and they're sorry I was not on the list but have not made any final decisions . That I took to mean "you REALLY shouldn't wait on us." However, I interviewed with my #1 program and I thought it went really well. I told them during the interview that I had this ridiculous exploding offer and they were basically like, "we're going to need 2-3 weeks to see everyone and make a decision and BTW the school putting pressure on you sucks!" I tried one more time with my POI and got the same response. So, I was convinced that I'd clearly overestimated how well the interviews went and they didn't want mt. But I got an offer as soon as the committee finished meeting. So, my 2 cents worth is to read between the line. Good luck!!!

Hi All! You've made some great points and I greatly appreciate it. As it turns out, tonight I received word that I've been admitted into my 1st choice program. I will accept their offer as soon as the official letter gets here. (Having only applied to 3 programs, I've been making myself sick with worry that I would either not get in or I'd be attending the less preferred program.) My first choice program is definitely more prestigious than the one I referred to in my original post, but more importantly, it is a much better fit. The thing that worried me most about the "safety program" was that the faculty was not publishing in the top journals and I feel that would impact the kind of work that i'd be doing, which would impact the kind of job i'd get in 4-5 years. Anyway, thank you again for your feedback. I'm still in total shock at the fact that my gamble actually worked. (I would not recommend this strategy. You will definitely end up with an ulcer at the end! :playful:) Off to a great night sleep for the first time in 2 weeks!!!
