  1. I am done with my GRE ( Q - 800 , V - 440 . A - 4.5 ) and awaiting my TOEFL results ( 79+ expected ). I've a GPA of 3.7/4 in my undergrad program and would be applying as an International student for Spring '13 session in 3-4 universities of the following list -Texas A and M University ( Harold Vance Dept of Pet Engg -University of Kansas -University of Alaska Fairbank -Texas Tech Uni -University of Houston -Tulsa -University of Southern California -New Mexico Tech -University of Texas Austin -Lousinia State University -Pennsilvani Sate Univ -Colorado School of Mines Keeping in view my academic record , applying at which of the following has maximum chances of getting my application accepted. And what are factors that would earn me a scholarship or a grad / research assistantship ?
  2. Do you agree or disagree It is better to marry someone who is simillar to you , rather than someone who is different from you . Use specific examples and reasons to support your answer. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Marriage is one of the most important milestone in a person's life. It is a unique tradition in our anthropoligical history which marks an event where two souls are united , as husband and wife , for the rest of their lives. Thus , one should give some serious thinking about his/her compatibility with the traits of the partner one is getting linked to . I disagree with the above statement and beleive that marrying someone who is differnt from you is better. My first point in substantiating my opinion is that it is far more adventurous to marry a person who is somewhat different from you. Well before going into the details of this reason , one needs to define what is meant by 'different' ? The partner could be different in terms of physical attributes like height , wieght and skin color. Or they both could be distinct in terms of nationality , race or the religion they follow . Another aspect could be that they simply have different personalities which could be in the form of what music they like , what tastes they have or what political views or cultural traditions they follow ! Thus , these factors which have been discussed above bring a wide range of diversity in the relationship which is good. You never know what to expect next from ur soulmate which adds a factor of excitement . If the couple are absolutely similiar in various ways , life might become predictive and monotonous making the relationship stagnant which is not good. My second reason for supporting this view is that once you identify the differences with each other , you should then learn to compromise on things for the sake of others happiness. This element of making room for others opinion or taste is very helpful in ghaving a happy and lasting relatinoship.Once you start respecting the differences, it strenghtens the marriage bond. A simple example could be that both the husband and wife have different tastes in restaurants while going out . One is fond of italian fast food while the other prefers continental food . Thus , they would both make efforts on various instances inorder to accomodate the other person's wish which is a sign of happy linkage between the husband and wife. This clearly indicates my point that marraying someone different would have an upper edge over marrying someone who is simillar to you. My explaination of the the third point focuses on the idea that when you marry someone who is not same to you in some respect , you start learning to have a dfifferent perspective of things. It opens up your mind to various options available which you didn't seem to notice before. It widens up our mental horizon of how we take things . Let take a case where each of the husband and wife has a different social and cultural background. One is accustomed to the city life and the other is from a rustic background . This would affect how they perceive different things in life . One might be more focussed on the traditions and moral values while the other more ambitious about his career and monetary rewards. But once they are binded in the bond of marriage , they would learn to start seeing the other side as well . And slowly and gradually, there would be a shift in their perceptions .Thus being flexible in your views would help foster a better marriage life. Therefore , taking in to consideration the points I had mentioned above , I would disgree with the statement provided and hold the beleif that marrying someone different would be benificial in the longer run of life with various advantages such as it would be far more daring , you would start compromising and start having a different perspective of things in life. This would ultimately lead to a better , stronger and long lsating relationship !
  3. I didn't had the chance of running the essay through a word processor , so there may be some spelling mistakes . Apologies for that . ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Summarize the problems with the core curriculum discussed in the lecture , and then explain the advantages to using the fixing these problems using the advantages in the passage. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The lecture given by professor mainly focusses on the changes being bought about in the core cirriculums of their university , after consultations with the academics and the students body . He validates these changes by saying that if things are not going as planned or desired , then change is the need of the time. He provides 3 reasons for substantiating his claim. The first point he puts forwards is that that some of the courses being offered were beyond the skills required in that particular desgree program.Although there were several advantages linked to these programs earlier such as nurturing communication skills and quantitative thinking in the students, the structuring of these programs was not appropriate. Either they were too easy for the students or totally irrelevant to the majors students were opting for . Thus , a proper study to combat these shortfalls was needed to bear the desired result. The second point he explains is that class size offering core cirriculum subjects was too large. Despite the fact that after introducing these subjects in the university , as mentioned in the passage , the quality of students admitting in and the college profile in the public improved , there were some missing links too . An example of intensive courses like political sciences majors has been illustrated by professor to prove his point. He stresses on the fact that additional guidance would be required by the students in their core cirriculum subjects to get more out of the subjects. The third advantage outlined by in the lecture by the professor was that a sense of innovation needs to be introduced in teaching and evaluating students in these core cirriculum subjects.Although the students reaped diverse advantages like borader perspective on different political , social and cultural issues after going through these subjects , a different approach was needed to add more value to the core subjects . After revamping their course structure , summer internships and volunteer work would be added to core credit . This would push up students to have a more practical taste of the theorotical subjects they were studying so far in the past. Thus the advantages put forwarded by the professor in his lecture to change the structure of core cirriculum far outweigh the existing advantages that were mentioned in the passage.
