  1. It seems like UPF really prefers recruiting from its own pool of MSc students (website says most students admitted have previously done an MSc at UPF) - any ideas whether this is actually true?
  2. i thought the time for shallow "grand unified theories" are over...?
  3. I'd say UCL - it's on a par with LSE (according to even LSE professors) and based in London. Whereas Warwick is - well, in the middle of nowhere.
  4. To be honest: If you are considering a PhD, I think you should aim high and do not constrain yourself by excluding "good" schools: There are also many ways you can finance your MSc (scholarships, tuition waivers, loan etc.), so I would not exclude UK and US ex ante. The money should be the smallest concern when you are applying - you can think about how to finance it later, but don't go for "cheap" or "easy" (non competitive) places if you want to eventually do a PhD! That has been my mistake... and it gets harder to make up for it once you get to the PhD....
  5. It is ranked 96 on repec - is this good?
  6. LSE! cambridge econ is not very good anyway.
  7. based on my experience, it is very unlikely that people can proceed. even if you get a distinction, you need to worry about funding -- by then, it will be june already so there's not much to do. most people progress somehow to phd, simply by applying elsewhere. msc economics people get the same conditional offer when they apply, and clearly everyone would not mind staying at lse so the situation does not look really good :) had i known this before. ;)
  8. I am currently doing this program. Basically it's just the standard MSc (same courses, same people, everything same), except that you do not need to re-apply for the PhD but can progress automatically conditional on Distinction. That said, you still need to worry about securing funding. Oh, and another difference is that you are officially categorized as research student, so you can borrow books for a longer time period.
  9. hi guys what are the odds of moving into IIES after SSE and SU? seems a bit unclear how the progression works exactly, or how the formalities are (do you need to be at SU or SSE?)
  10. i think those brown posts on GC are a combination of fakes and MA admits (the only admits also reported here said they got the first year unfunded, which is only the case for the MA stream).... so i'm not sure what this means...
  11. exactly. i feel they should have warned him and suggest him take some more courses to build up his skills. there's no point in having him run into 35 rejections and a lot of disappointment (not even speaking of the money spent!). personally i am quite surprised that my letter writers did not warn me about how competitive the US schools are.... -_-
  12. I find it rather irresponsible that his/her professors were actually writing all these letters....
  13. ok guys what's going on with brown? haven't heard anything yet? are all these posts real?
  14. Is this true or do they say this every time to scare people? Let me quote from my rejection letter in 2011: "Unfortunately, we are not able to make you an offer this year. We had a very strong applicant pool this year --- almost 1000 applicants for 18 slots --- and we have had to pass over literally hundreds of high-quality applicants. Please take one of your other options."
  15. omg so brown is over? why don't they reject then?
  16. I mailed to ask and got a reply saying that the first wave of offers have gone out - so if you haven't received your offer or rejection, you're likely waitlisted.
  17. hey guys, where do you exactly check the status of your stanford application? is this on the applyweb.com interface or somewhere else? can someone post a link?
