  1. Well, and I'd like to say this is just my personal opinion. I can be wrong so if you're seriously considering SD, you'd better ask to the graduate students at SD and LA. Good luck !! =p
  2. Well, there are a few guys who do general 'econometric theory', for instance Sun and Santos I'm not sure about Elliot.. For time-series, they have Hamilton and Beare.. Well, I think SD is still strong in metrics even without White..
  3. Definitely SD dominates LA in both metrics and micro. In particular, if you're interested in time-series, LA has none of senior faculty in that area.. (they have one assistant prof) Matzkin and Han are in LA and they're quite good but they only do microeconometrics.. If you're interested in these faculty's research area, it's not a bad choice to choose UCLA However, SD has more well-rounded metrics faculty.. SD also has good micro research group(Sobel, Watson, Ali, Miller) and their placement in micro theory has been impressive in recent years.. Also, SD is much better place to live than LA(westwood) and SD has lower attrition rate and more friendly atmosphere.. Definitely, you'll be happier in SD than LA.. One bad thing about SD is their stingy stipend but other than that, SD is really a great place to do Ph.D..
  4. Hi, I'm studying graduate metrics these days and a lack of knowledge on matrix differentiation is bugging me... Could you recommend a good book on matrix differentiation? I've took two advanced courses on linear algebra but they never taught me how to do matrix differentiation.. I know a few tricks on how to differentiate with vectors but I don't feel like i actually understand the rules.. I would appreciate if you could recommend a good one.. Thanks !! :)
  5. Why don't you consider Columbia? Don't they have a nice group in mechanism design? I'm not a micro guy so I don't know much about the faculty but there are micro guys around me who enthusiastically want to go to Columbia. You'd better check your every option before making a final decision..
  6. I think people have their own criteria.. I used $$$ for 30k-40k which seems more reasonable..

  8. Thanks SubEffect !! I have talked to my macro professor today and he also said that recently Yale macro is on the upward trend, especially after recruitment of Smith.. So I guess Yale will cover my every research interest.. Hope to see you this year !! It's so nice to hear directly from Yale first year students.. This forum is awesome! :eager:
  9. Thank all for your kind replies... !! :) today I talked with my advisor and he said that definitely I should go to Yale... So i'm kinda inclined to Yale ... He said that if I'm interested in metrics, definitely Yale is way better than Berkeley or Princeton.. I'm interested in applied field as well but I'd like to learn rigorous statistical tools first.. so I guess Yale is the right place for me! So It's very likely that I'll meet FromTheHip this year.. :eager: plus, for those who found my replies on Gilmore Girls funny: that's pretty much standard way to figure out foreign places !!
  10. Thanks for your kind reply!! This gives me good sense of how Yale and Berkeley are.. I haven't been to New Haven and Berkeley although I've been to SF before.. but I really liked watching Gilmore Girls and I liked the place where Rory lived..(some place at Conneticut..) I'm an international student and now I'm worrying that I may not be able to go to the visit day due to enormous travel cost.. Anyway, I really appreciate your reply !! XD
  11. Hi, guys Well I haven't got every result yet but I'd like to start thinking about where to go.. I really need an advice on this.. My primary interest is Econometrics and Macroeconomics(usually applied macro) I know there are many types of Macro so the naive information like 'this school has strong macro group' might not be useful to me.. I'm interested in more statistical approach .. Sargent or Sims for instance. I don't like macro theory, for instance Kiyotaki's..(I think it's closer to story rather than science..) Since Yale is really strong in time-series, I think it'll be a good place to study. However, I think Berkeley has good macro group too (I'm interested in Yuriy Goroxxxx's research, sorry I can't remember the whole name).. but I'm not sure whether his research can represent Berkeley.. In Yale, I'm interested in Fair, Smith, and if I major pure econometrics, Phillips and Chen.. I know one of my favorite macroeconometrician, Schorfheide has studied at Yale too My second preference, if I change my primary interest, is labor and econometrics. I guess both departments have nice research group in that area.. So I'm kinda confused right now. I'm still waiting for Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, NYU I guess Princeton and NYU would fit my research interest too.. Should I wait for these schools? Regarding funding... I received fellowship from Yale but no 1st year funding from Berkeley.. but I guess it'll be negotiable.. Which school would you choose if you were in my situation?? Any good advice?? Thanks in advance!!
