  1. According to Spidey's notes, so as together is never correct in GMAT land. The correct construction is so...adjective as to be adjective. So, ans. should be B.
  2. I would go with B as well. "no need for" sounds better than "no need of".
  3. For q1, I believe numbers of staff members is incorrect in B. It should have been number of staff members.
  4. For the second one, ans. is E. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentence-correction/15037-parallel-construct.html?highlight=combat+widespread+illegal
  5. Isn't 'recover from' the correct idiomatic usage. To me 'recover out of' (used in C) does not sound right.
  6. The first sentence is the conclusion and the second sentence is the reason the conclusion is drawn. Cross out A, C and D. Its between B abd E for me. Since the first sentence does not say anything about the laws, i go with B too. dimbulb, these are good questions. Do you have OAs.
  7. 1-Good question. Took me three minutes just to undersatnd what it was actually saying.IMHO, ans is E.Here is the summary of the arg. Sales Manager: Overall sales are up.People love our food. Accountant: But for every one of the restaurants which was open last year and the year before, we have lost sales. People dont like our food. In other words, overall sales are up because some new restaurants were opened last year. In order to refute accountant's argument, we need to show that it was not the food which was the cause of decline in sales but some other factor. E successfully does that. A is not the answer because it applies to all restaurants. C is not the answer because it does not apply to the restaurants that lost sales. The issue here is the restaurants that lost sales.(Isnt the food quality supposed to be the same in all restaurants. I dont think you can make a distinction here between some restaurants having better food than others and thats what C does). 2- C. Use negation test to find the assumption as Yoda pointed out.
  8. Actually, it depends on the situation. If the group is acting as a whole, it is singular. (In the above example it is). If the members of the group are acting indiviudally, plural should be used. Using Yoda's example. 1-The group of students in the lobby was fairly rowdy. (Group is singular here). 2- The group of stedents in the lobby were talking amongst themselves. (In this case, we use plural)
  9. Correct idiom is 'chance of'. Eliminates everything except B.
  10. From the given eq. xy=0; either x=0 or y=0 or both are zero. (1) y has to be zero. ====>|x-y|>0. Ans. is either A or D. (2) y=0, x may or may not be zero. Cannot tell. Ans. A
  11. Yellow jackets number among the 900 or so species of the world’s social wasps, wasps living in a highly cooperative and organized society where they consist almost entirely of females—the queen and her sterile female workers. wasps living in a highly cooperative and organized society where they consist almost entirely of (society where??, incorrect) wasps that live in a highly cooperative and organized society consisting almost entirely of (correct) which means they live in a highly cooperative and organized society, almost all (which refers to social wasps and not the yellow jackets, incorrect) which means that their society is highly cooperative, organized, and it is almost entirely (same as C) living in a society that is highly cooperative, organized, and it consists of almost all (changes the meaning by referring to social wasps and not the sub-group yellow jackets) Antarctica receives more solar radiation than does any other place on Earth, yet the temperatures are so cold and the ice cap is reflective, so that little polar ice melts during the summer; otherwise, the water levels of the oceans would rise 250 feet and engulf most of the world’s great cities. is reflective, so that little polar ice melts during the summer; otherwise, is so reflective that little of the polar ice melts during the summer; were it to do so, so reflective that little polar ice melts during the summer, or else reflective, so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer, or reflects so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer; if it did(This is testing parallelism. ......temperatures are so cold and ice cap is so reflective. Only choice B maintains it.) Retailers reported moderate gains in their November sales, as much because of their sales of a year earlier being so bad as that shoppers were getting a head start on buying their holiday gifts. of their sales of a year earlier being so bad as that of their sales a year earlier having been as bad as because of their sales a year earlier being as bad as because their sales a year earlier had been so bad as because their sales of a year earlier were as bad as that(Again testing prallelism. Either 'as much because x as because y' or 'as much because of x as because of y' is required. Only D maintains the proper structure). Possible long-term consequences of the “greenhouse effect,” the gradual warming of the Earth’s climate, may include melting the polar ice caps and a rising sea level. may include melting the polar ice caps and a rising sea level may include the melting of polar ice caps and the rising sea level may include polar ice caps that are melting and sea levels that are rising include melting the polar ice caps and sea levels that are rising include melting of the polar ice caps and a rise in sea level('Possible' and 'may' are redundant. eliminate A, B and C. D is not parallel. Hence E) On account of a law passed in 1993, making it a crime punishable by imprisonment that a United States citizen hold gold in the form of bullion or coins, immigrants found that on arrival in the United States they had to surrender all of the gold they had brought with them. On account of a law passed in 1993, making it a crime punishable by imprisonment that a United States citizen hold With a law passed in 1933 that makes it a crime punishable by imprisonment that a United States citizen hold A law passed in 1933 that made it a crime punishable by imprisonment for a United States citizen holding Because of a law passed in 1933 making it a crime punishable by imprisonment for a United States citizen to hold Due to a law being passed in 1933 that makes it a crime punishable by imprisonment for a United States citizen to hold(This is a cause and effect sentence. Only D is clear enough to convey that.)
  12. Here is Erin's explanantion. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1732&highlight=wings
  13. Thanks a lot Bob. It does clarify a lot.
