In many countries, the proportion of older people is steadily increasing. Does this trend have more negative effects or positive effects on society?
At present our life expectancy is increasing. Our health has improved so much that we can live longer than in the past.
With this increasing life expectancy, elderly people can assist their families bring up their grandchildren. Also, the elderly can contribute with their knowledge to our society, helping the younger ones to make better decisions and supporting them in their life experiences.
Moreover, if they still feel healthy and able to work, they can contribute more to society working for more years and contributing to the income of governments by paying their taxes.
However, on the one hand, a longer life span can bring about varied problems and difficulties to society. Year after year life expectancy and the number of elderly people are increasing proportionally. As more senior people get pensions from governments, more efforts are necessary from this party to be able to afford those.
Moreover, this will bring up a serious problem to hospitals and health centres. I am sure they will have less capacity to take care of the increasing number of patients; they will be really over-crowded without sufficient medical staff for patients and will be also necessary medicines to all of patients.
Having said this, of course governments must have a radical attitude to be able to afford all those costs. I am sure the only way is to increase taxes over the working people. They will have to pay more taxes to support governments on their duties. It is a fact that this attitude will not be well accepted, bring about dissatisfaction among them and it could also cause strikes in some countries.
In conclusion, I am sure we want a better life for all of us, more health, more happiness and more quality of life. Yet, from a social and political view point, having more senior people living only with pensions from governments might bring more negative effects to society than positive ones.
