  1. Thank you for the advices. For people interested to know, I ended up applying to the following 8 schools: - MIT economics(Rejected) -Stanford GSB (Rejected) -Harvard economics (Rejected) - Berkeley economics (Accepted, full fellowship 2yrs plus 3 years full stipend with TA,RA) -Northwestern Kellogg MEDS (Accetpted, full fellowship 2 yrs plus 3 years full sitpend with TA,RA) - Caltech HSS(Accepted, full fellowship....) -UCLA economics (Accepted, no funding first year, funding for next 4 years with TA, RA) -NYU economics (Rejected, initially my professors told me NYU contacted them and was very inerested and asked me how interested i was, i said it was not my top 4...) I now have to decide between MECS and Berkeley, any additional recommendations given my interests?
  2. I posted the first berkeley post on GC and then insisted. There was another one from another guy too. All erased. They didnt mention anything about a visit day indeed. AC: MEds,Caltech,UCLA, Berkeley. Rejected: mit, stanford gsb. Waiting: nyu, harvard
  3. Northwestern MEDS: 03/17 Caltech: 03/06
  4. Thank you Zeno, what about harvard? and what again about econ vs harvard bs?
  5. Hi, i was just wondering whether you think that MIT is very top in microeconomics. us news ranks them very high but in other posts i have not seen you guys saying that MIT is very good. i mean like top 5 or top 10. Also if my interests are micro, game theory, decision theory, which one would be better, sloan or econ? Thanks
  6. @Sanda, Zeno Could you recommend any specific CS departments or programs? Specially Sanda I am surprised you say it is a direct hit for CS, could you recommend me any? Also i think because of my background i have much more chance getting into a top econ or buisness program than into an CS program although i might. Thanks!!
  7. @mcsokrates Harvards microeconomic theory department is the best??? are there many game theorists?
  8. Alright, thank you very much for your advices!!! I am probably considering northwestern as my first preference and then stanford/yale/harvard and then others and then duke. So basically following your advice. Northwestern vs. stanford/nyu/harvard Do you think the students will be much better in the second schools? and the academic department for microeconomic theory?
  9. Hi, thank you for replying... i didnt put my profile because i wanted more feed back in terms of the programs itselfs rather than if u thought I would be accepted(though if you have comments on that they are welcome to), but if you think its useful: PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Economics Undergrad GPA: 9/10 at mexican university which translates to percentile 97 of my uni. Type of Grad: Grad GPA: GRE: 169(math),150,4 Math Courses:Mathematical analysis, linear algebra, calculus, dynamic and static optimization, differential equations, statistics Econ Courses (grad-level): Microeconomics, macroeconomics, Game theory, econometrics, good quality decision theory Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Mi core economic courses were grad-level(and so recognized) even if in an undergrad program Other Courses: Letters of Recommendation: Quite good i guess. One professor in economic theory and PE who is member of econometric society. One professor in the math department in Bristol university who i did research with. Another professor. Research Experience: Research collaborator working with two professors in a decision under uncertainty group for 2 months. Assistant of the professor in the econometric society for 6 months. Undergrad thesis. Attended several high level conferences Teaching Experience: None really. Research Interests: the above SOP: to do Concerns: which phd? Other: Honorable mention in the Internatinal Mathematical Olympiad. Applying to: not sure but among the above. Also to put some controversy, I have had the opportunity to speak with some important decision theory professors, they all think i should apply for a phd in economics even though i made clear my interests: their arguments were mainly: 1.- Phd is about research and its ok to have one year of boring courses, when i replied i could be taking courses i really enjoy instead they said, you can do that the rest of life... 2.- Macro is not that far from micro, its useful to know both Only one professor i asked said he felt i totally should apply to northwestern to avoid macro. I am inclined towards 1 and 2 too despite the advise of this professors. Ty
  10. Any comments, corrections or sugestions are very welcome. I like Mathematical economics, game theory, mathematics, decision and choice theory, probability theory, behavioral economics(theory), logic. I dont like Macroeconomics, Econometrics or even the microeconomic part which has to do with prices, general equilibrium, supply and demand. I have to apply for a phd. I know that a phd is mainly not about courses and more about the research, but i dont feel like i should be taking courses that i dislike and that i wont use in my further academic career when i could be taking courses that i really enjoy. On the other hand applying to a standard economics phd has much more prestige, some times bigger and better faculty and most probably better students to work with. I have the following options: 1.- Programs where i would mainly have courses in what i want: Duke Social and Decision scienc in Fuqua UC Irvine, mathematical behavioral science 2.- Programs that have probably more prestige and are a bit less different than my real interests but still you dont get macro: Northwestern at Kellog(1st year: 3 quarters in standar microeconomics, 2 optimization + 1game theory, 2 econometrics +1decision theory) Caltech(microeconmics, econometrics, political theory, foundations of rationality) Carnegie mellon decision science??? it doesnt say more and it seems to be much more experimental. 3.- The last posibility is to go to a standard very prestigous program in economics with a big economic theory group and swallow most of the courses which i wouldnt like: Standford GSB Princeton Yale NYU Harvard??? What do you think? do you have any comments, any programs i missed? any advices on what i should i choose supposing i had the choice?? Some aditional information on all of this can be found in posts like the following: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/123133-mathematical-behavioral-economics-decision-science.html Thanks!!!!
  11. anybody heard anything about the ucirvine probgram in mathematical behavioral sciences?
  12. Any thoughts, corrections and comments in the following are very much appreciated. I want to do a phd and further research and believe that have good qualifications. My interests are Mathematical Economics, Game Theory, Decision Theory, logic, mathematics, foundations of rationality, behavioral economics(theory). I dont like Macro or econometrics or even the micro part that is not the above(supply-demand, general equilibrium...) What Phd and which university would be the best to go to? 1.- There are few programs which seem to concentrarte very closely in ONLY what i want: Duke, Decision Science program in Fuqua UC Irvine, Mathematical Behavioral Science The problem is they are not as prestigious as the top universities. 2.- There are a few programs which seem to be more prestigious and a bit more far to what i want but still close: Caltech, Social Sciences Phd(first year courses: micro, econometrics, political theory, foundations of rationality) Nortwestern MEDS in Kellog(first year: 3quarters micro, 2 econometrics + decision theory, 2 optimization. A lot of faculty in microeconomics) Carnegie Mellon Social and Decision Sciences(doesnt give much info, seems to be flexible but seems to be more experimental) London School of Economics but in the philosophy or mathematics departments???? 3.- There are the top universities in Economics which are very good in economic theory but you get other courses such as macro or other buisness related: Stanford GSB Berkeley Economics NYU Yale Harvard?? Princeton Basically my courses would be things i dont like too much: Macro, econometrics and micro On the other hand i know phd is much more about research and i would be working with someone in what I like afterwards(after all you have to take this courses only for a year), but I feel like this is my phd and its not worthy to study very hard for things i know i dont even like and will never be studying when i could be taking courses that i would really enjoy... What do you think about what i should decide? what do you think about the assesment i made?? am i missing a program? is there any similar program at the top top universities? I feel like i prefer duke or ucirvine but i am very tempted to choose(assuming i was already accepted and had the choice) Northwestern, Caltech, standford or berkeley instead for the prestige... Thank you for any comments for another thread in similar things: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/123133-mathematical-behavioral-economics-decision-science.html
