I think this is a rash generalization. Sure, plenty of folks do it for themselves alone, and at the expense of loved ones. Others, however, do it, sometimes primarily, to create a better work-life balance and income for their spouses and children.

One of my interviews was like this, one was not. The one that wasn't was very much to find who the cream of the crop was (trying to get from 8 interviews down to two admits). Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.
