I think this is a rash generalization. Sure, plenty of folks do it for themselves alone, and at the expense of loved ones. Others, however, do it, sometimes primarily, to create a better work-life balance and income for their spouses and children.

My father in law has one. Every inch of it is original--even the same tires. It's got about 19k miles on it. Thing of beauty.

So your take-home is about $34k/yr with your stipend and Obamacare? Am I understanding that correctly?

One of my interviews was like this, one was not. The one that wasn't was very much to find who the cream of the crop was (trying to get from 8 interviews down to two admits). Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

Love the short lease idea. Save 1/3? I'm assuming dual income or one heck of a stipend from the badgers (Madison's not the cheapest).

Yikes! Is that bc you're non-US? Is that "family coverage at a discounted rate" that some schools espouse?

Did you build your own calculator, or use a site one? If site, any preference?

Curious how you all are going about adjusting your stipends based on COL. I've found a few sites, but nothing I'm overly fond of. I haven't found one that just adjusts a salary in a given location to the national average (benchmark). Are you just comparing each location to where you currently live? Comparing possible locations head-to-head? Thoughts welcomed!

I would like to think I'm being hard on myself, but I seriously megabombed one. I felt like everything they asked I had to say "well, I kinda have a weak background in that. Oh, and I suck." Decision TBD but I'll go on record to say I'm 85% sure I'm out.
