Thanks for all the feedback! The interesting thing is that I happen to have some insider knowledge about this place, and there has never been discrimination against families or anything of the sort. As a matter of fact, some students have been admitted while pregnant or soon after having babies (and the faculty have known this). It also strikes me as odd because I was interviewed twice by two separate faculty, and one did not even come close to asking this question, and the other one did. So it seems to me that it is not systemic, but I just happened to get that one interviewer who would be willing to ask.
That being said, I did make it to the next round of the short list albeit not the top pick to make campus visits. I can't help but think that the question I was asked had a little something to do with it. But, I definitely wouldn't want to get into a program just because the school wants to avoid a lawsuit. I want them to feel I am a good fit, and vice versa.
