  1. Only once one has known real sadness can one feel true happiness." Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. My essay: Only once one has known real sadness, can one know true happiness. I agree with the issue in hand because according to me, happiness and sadness are two different emotions. Two opposite emotions to be precise. Thus, only when one has seen the worst, can he appreciate the best. The following examples validate my stance. Let us consider the invention of the bulb by Thomas Edison. He had failed several times in his attempt to make an electric bulb. He faced a lot of criticism from others and many suggested him to move on. He had the unbreakable determination to overcome his critics and create the first light bulb. Only he knows how happy he must have felt at that moment when he proved all his doubters wrong. Another great example would be that of Usain Bolt, the athlete. One can imagine the sadness he must have undergone when he missed the gold medal in first major race by a few fractions of a second. He could have easily been traumatized as this was the moment he spent months preparing for day in and day out. When all those efforts account to nothing, it could take its toll on a human. But, he didn't give up. He just practiced harder every day and only came back a mentally and physically stronger man. Now,as we all know, he is the undisputed king of sprinting. He is so good that he breaks records set by himself. That no doubt gives him and his fans unfathomable happiness. But I agree to a certain extent that one does not need to experience sadness to know what true happiness is.All one needs to be is to be appreciative of things around him.A simple thank you from a son every time his parents do something for him wouldn't go amiss. True happiness lies in these little little things. If one can realize what he has around himself and give each entity its due respect and time, I'm sure he would also experience true happiness. Thus in conclusion, I would like to say from the examples of Thomas Edison and Usain Bolt that one it takes for one to go through real sadnes to experience true happiness, though that need not be true always.
