  1. Hello everyone, I’ve been admitted at European University Institute’s PhD with full funding. Nevertheless, I’m worried about the lack of Environmental Economics research among the faculty. I have the alternative option of the doctoral track M2 at Toulouse School of Economics. Nevertheless, at TSE there is no guarantee of progressing to the PhD after the M2 and, given that I already hold a master’s degree, the prospect of ending up with another master and start PhD applications all over again is not flattering. Apparently, TSE accepts around 25 students for the M2 and 15 make it to the PhD. Moreover, I wonder if the current COVID-19 crisis may affect universities’ funding and cohort sizes next year. I also have an admission to the PPE master at Paris School of Economics, which comes with the same caveats as TSE, after 2 years there is guarantee of progressing to the PhD. I’ve entertained the idea of going to EUI and look for a second supervisor elsewhere, EUI students can visit other institution during their second or third year as part of the program. The school holds some exchange agreements with some universities and seems open to the possibility of arrangements with other departments by students proposal (Exchange Programmes • European University Institute). Nevertheless, I wonder if it is a stretch from my part to have this as my plan A. Any thoughts on whether EUI might be a good option after all or if the risk of going to TSE/PSE is still negligible compared to the better fit with its department? I particularly wonder how common it is or if it makes sense for a professor to invest the time and effort of supervising a student outside of his/her uni. Any thoughts/advise welcome! Best regards. PD: TSE comes with some funding (but not a full stipend) and PSE has no funding. I may get some external scholarship, tho.
  2. Hello everybody! :shy: As many of you I have to make important decisions in the following days. I’ll present my situation. Let’s see if you can help me a bit :D I’ve done my applications to PhD/Master programs in economics (fall 2016). In the meanwhile, I accepted an offer for a position as RA at the Bank of Spain (Banco de España). So now, that I’m receiving the admissions/rejections, I’m trying to decide which of these 2 paths follow: Accept the best offer I get in this application period. Probably I’m talking about the Master in Economics and Finance at CEMFI or LSE’s EME. Still waiting with hope the outcomes of BU and UCSD though. Keep my position as RA and apply again for Fall 2017 or Fall 2018 (I could probably work in the bank untill January 2018). This could allow me to get a strong letter from my boss (PhD in LSE, head of the división) and I’d have some research related experience in my CV. Moreover, I could improve my GRE. Additionally, in the worst of cases, I’ll have saved enough money to study an european master for a year or two, if I dont get funding anywhere. Two relevant notes: In the long run, I see myself researching in central banks, IMF, WB, OECD… more than in a university. I just got my bachelors, I’m 22, which makes me think there is no rush in starting my PhD this year. Here is a profile evaluation thread I opened with more information about my profile: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/156489-profile-evaluation-uc3m-us.html Honestly, right now I tend to think 2 is the best path for me, but maybe I’m making a mistake if I reject the opportunity to study at LSE, CEMFI, BU or even UCSD!!! What do you think? Thanks for your attention!!! Any piece of advise is highly appreciated PD: I'm an international applicant.
  3. Institution: UT Austin Program: Economics PhD Decision: Accepted Funding: 15k Fellow/TAship Notification date: 02/18/16 Notified through: Email Comments: I'll probably decline it.
  4. Institution: Barcelona GSE (Pompeu Fabra) Program: Msc in Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: Tuition Waiver + TA (5k) Notification date: 02-08-2016 Notified through: e-mail Comments: Not sure if I'll take it. Feels good to start with an admission though.
  5. I got a job for the weekends (and, at least in Spain, IELTS should be taken on saturdays). I need to get the money for applications somehow :( I'll try to retake it but don't know if it will be possible.
  6. Hello :livid:, I'd like to know how the minimum english language requirements are taken into account in selection processes in LSE and other british universities. I'm thinking about the Msc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics. The thing is I know a former student of my university who got accepted in the master. His graduate record and GRE scores were significantly lower than mines. GREAT!! Nevertheless, although I meet the required overall score of 7 (IELTS), my writting got an 5.5, and the required minimum is a 6 for this section. Is this necessarily a motive for rejection? Could my recommenders offset this in the LORs? Thanks for your time!!
  7. As preparation, I'm gonna attend to several courses of the Phd program (Maths, econometrics) of my university during this year and my recommenders will mention it. How could this be valued by selectors? Thank you all for the responses.
  8. I know at least one person from my university with a similar profile who got accepted in BU, probably with worse GRE and better LOR though. Besides, a couple of guys from the same place made it to LSE with external funding. I'll ask to someone in my department, but I think it's not as impossible as you guys present it. Thank you for the advise anyway. :livid:
  9. PROFILE: Type of Undergra: Bsc in Economics, from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Top 101-150 [T38 in QSRanking], strong at econometrics though). 4 years programme. Undergrad GPA: 8.47/10 (Probably in the top 5%) Type of Grad: -- Grad GPA: -- GRE: Q165/V159/(waiting for official results and AWA score) Math Courses: Linear algebra, Optimization, Statistics I and II (don’t know the US equivalents, sorry L) Econ Courses (grad-level): Econ Courses (undergrad-level): intro to micro (B) and macro(A), intermediate micro (A+) and macro (B), game theory (B), econometrics (A), time series (A+), quantitative macro (A+), quantitative micro (B+), Industrial Organization (A+), Economic History (B+), Financial and Monetary macroeconomics (A+), Info economics (A), Public economics(A)… Other Courses: A few in humanities Letters of Recommendation: 1st relatively well recognized in econometrics (UCSD graduate), 2nd has published in Econometrica, The Economic Journal and Econometric Theory (Oxford Graduate) and don’t know the third yet, my thesis supervisor maybe, (probably somebody graduated in UCLA, CEMFI, UCSD… But not as good as the other 2). Research Experience: ¿Bachelor thesis? Teaching Experience: -- Research Interests: Econometrics, Game theory, financial economics. SOP: Not yet. Concerns: I have not Graduate Degree. I need funding, can’t accept otherwise. Other: Traineeship in finance at REPSOL during my last semester, I attendended as an exchange student to University of Amsterdam during my third year. Applying to: UCLA, UCSD, Columbia, U. Boston, LSE, Tinbergen, U. Toronto, Penn, Cambridge. What are my chances of getting accepted with funding in these Phd programmes? It would mean a lot to me any piece of information or advise you could give. Thank you in advance!!! :loveheart:
