  1. Accounting made offers early this Monday.
  2. I was thinking about writing to the schools and asked about the interview results. Can I say, "I was wondering if I could know my status after the interview two weeks ago"? or something else that is more appropriate. Thank you!
  3. Congrats Silviatx! All the sweat paid off!!:victorious:
  4. Hey guys, I'm preparing for interview questions, although I haven't heard back from any school yet. Last year I replicated some sampling and statistical analysis in Ball and Brown (1968). If you are my interviewers, what questions would you ask me about the replication? Thank you!
  5. Thanks hummingbird! I just took TOEFL and got 107 (reading 30, speaking 23, and writing and listening 27). Do you think it is acceptable? Honestly, I think it fairly demonstrated my proficiency and I may not increase it considerably in a short time. As for research interests, I started to find disclosure, corporate governance, capital market, information asymmetry, (international) accounting standards and audit under both theory (I cannot understand the formula in the papers) and empirical are interesting. Those topics are not mutually exclusive. And I lack a big picture of how every research topic connects to each other or evolves. Do I need to find this out? For the sake of writing a personal statement. Also, is it sufficient to mention these topics as briefly as I did or should I elaborate more on them in the PS? Thank you guys!
  6. Thanks so much, Accgirl, Rando, and YasVoboden! Can't believe three weeks have already passed. I have reached out to all the recommenders and am now waiting for their reply. Meanwhile, I passed my last section of the CPA exam. (I know it has little to do with academia but I just wanted to finish what I started last year.) Now I am reading papers and thinking about my PS. Thanks again!
  7. Thanks for the advice, taxPhD! I will do more homework and be less broad and more specific. Another question, if I may, would it be better that three recommendation letters are all from faulty? Or I can have one of them from my previous work addressing the coaching experience (although which is different from teaching in class I guess). Thanks for your time!
  8. Hi everyone. Have been here for a while and finally my first post! I'm applying to Ph.D in Accounting, Fall 2017. Below are my background and a few questions. I appreciate if you could give me some advice. Thank you in advance! Test Scores: GMAT: 770, V42 (96%) Q51 (98%) AWA5.0 (57%) IR 8 (92%). TOEFL: some schools waive it, some don’t, and I plan to take it soon. Undegrad GPA: 85/100, Mechanical Engineering, top 1 university in China, 2007 Graduate GPA: MBA from a top 16 in U.S., only letter grades (not ABCDF) were provided, 2016 Research Experience: one year graduate assistantship in accounting (financial area), data collection (DEF 14A, 10K, 10Q, 8K, news, etc), cleaning, regression models and statistical analysis, and database (COMPUSTAT, CRSP, Eventus). I also attended two research seminars. Teaching Experience: little. From secondary school to college, I did very well in and enjoyed one-on-one tutoring. In my professional work, I gave two workshop/training sessions to junior staff and very often coached my clients. I made sure my explanations and instructions were explicit and logical, and I can always put myself in their shoes. Work Experience: prior to MBA and all in China, with four years in a big four auditing, one year in an investment bank Equity Capital Markets, and one year in EU Delegation to China grants management Number of programs planned to apply to: 15 Research interests: no specific topic but I am open to and interested in the areas of auditing/financial/managerial, with archival and analytical methodologies, slightly potential interests in government/NGO/environmental/sustainability accounting in the future Programming Skills: Stata, Matlab, R, C Selected Courses: Calculus I (89/100, Tsinghua University) Calculus II (97/100, Tsinghua University) Calculus III (87/100, Tsinghua University) Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry I (95/100, Tsinghua University) Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry II (94/100, Tsinghua University) Physics for Scientists and Engineering (97/100, Tsinghua University) Basic Statistics with R Programming (88/100, Coursera - University of Amsterdam) Inferential Statistics with R Programming (96/100, Coursera - University of Amsterdam) Econometrics (88/100, Coursera – Erasmus University Rotterdam) Questions: 1. I will “apply broadly” as other posts suggest, but could you advise a list of programs that I should focus more? 2. I will go through the recent top journals to see what specific topics may interest me, but a) what other ways can I narrow down my research interests in terms of topic/area/methodology, b) do I have to be very specific in my PS about what I will do, c) apart from my pure interest, what do you find my background may fit more? 3. For MBA GPA, is it OK that I do not report it (as I cannot) but just send out the transcript? My grades were improving in the four consecutive terms (in terms of the proportion of higher grades), but it is difficult to quantify the overall GPA 4. some schools say on their websites that professors are unable to meet or reply to you, is it sufficient that I do only some desktop research about the faculty and program and write down in my PS? Some schools ask what professors have you talked to or want to work with and I probably will talk to one. What factors should I consider besides research interest and what should I be cautious about? 5. About recommendation letters. One professor whom I have worked with since June 2015 is still very active and will write me one. Another also agrees but I worked with him on only one project recently. For the third one, I can reach out to my supervisor in China to talk about my training/coaching experience to approximate teaching ability, or I can talk to a professor that I took two classes and personally knows me. I was wondering what combinations you would prefer? 6. what other things I can do to increase my chances? Thanks in advance!
