Hi, I am new here. I want to apply for fall 2017 PhD in CS/AI/Robotic. I really appreciate any thoughts or feedback since I don't know whether I am competitive at. Undergrad: unknown Chinese university, major MIS, GPA 3.5, last one year in Australia unknown university. Grad: top-15 US university, major IT, GPA 3.85 GRE: 163(Q), 155(V), 3AWA Research: Two published paper in Chinese academic journal. Work experience: internship and full-time at a top US tech company for more than one year, SDE. LOR: probably two from US university, tenure professors, the third one is undecided. Concerns: 1. do I need to improve my GRE? 2. what range of school I am competitive at? (As same of almost every engineer, I dream of MIT. ) Thank you so much!

Hi startz, thank you for your reply. My professors give me some good suggestions, but they admit they have their PhD in Europe and are not familiar with US PhD applications and admissions, and where I will be competitive at. They want me to target top-20, but I am worried. I want to expand the range but not sure what range I should expand, 20-30, 30-50, 50-70? Thank you!

Type of Undergrad: not well know university in China, last two year in Canadian top-5 university. Undergrad GPA: 3.8 overall Type of Grad: top-50 U.S. university, not ranked in economics Grad GPA: 3.8 overall GRE: 167(Q) 155(V) 3.5AWA Math Courses: Calc 1(A) Cal 2(A) Advanced Cal(A) Linear Algebra(A) Differential Equations(A) Statistics(A-) Probability(A) Econ Courses: Micro intro, intermediate, advanced, macro intro intermediate advanced, econometrics, industrial organization, international finance, etc. Research: RA: 1 year full-time at top 3 business school, work wiht two APs (they graduate from europe) Graduate thesis Undergraduate thesis One publish paper in Chinese academic journal LOR two from APs I RA with one from a tenure professor in Canada Concerns: I'm really not sure what rank of U.S. universities I should target. My undergraduate and graduate school are not well-know or ranked high. My GRE is not good enough. Two LOR from assistant professors and they did not graduate in U.S, although they work in top-3 business school. I really really appreciate any feedback and help. It makes me can't sleep at 3am.
