1. To knight In fact, I haven't received my score yet. My professor, who is in Japan got it on June 19 (about 1 week after mailing date) and informed me. He didn't tell me my TWE and my score section either. Apparently, mailing from US to JP is much faster than that to Vietnam. You should be more patient! I wish you the best score. To Mali I can not make sense what you are driving at. Whom are you talking about ? To all, Thanks again for nice word. I will tell you about my TWE as soon as I get the score report. Best regards Phuoc

3. Hi TMs, My story relating TOEFL finally has a happy ending. I got 610 for the total. My dream of studying abroad has come true. Thank you very much, Erin for this wonderful site. Thanks also go to other TMs, esp. muaxuan, Mali, vvaann and Fortune. I wish all of you get much better score than mine. Phuoc

6. Thanks a lot to both of you, Vvaan and Mali, I will also take the test on May 10. To tell the truth, I have encountered the same problem as muaxuan but now I feel relieved as it is not actually serious. By the way, should I fill the photo file record by pen or by pencil ? This is not mentioned in the Bulletin. One more word, good luck to all of you who take the TOEFL on May 10 and hope to hear all the excellent scores as well. Phuoc
7. Congratulation!!! You did an excellent job !!! You can subtract your maximum score to the minimum one then divide into 6 to get a score you'll get if you gain 1 score in TWE. In your case it will be: (267-210)/6 = 9.5 Then subtract your required score (233) to the minimum (210), i.e. 23. Next, divide the result to 9.5. Boy, you only need 2.5 in TWE to get the total required score !!! Terrific !!!
8. In fact, I've ever met that question and have chosen A not C. I am too lazy to look it up in the dictionary and don't know why it is. Thank you, Phuong, for your nice explanation and also Tan for posting this question. To Erin, As far as I remember,(hope that it is reliable) this question is in the Practice Tests published by ETS(they said that all the tests are from formerly administrative TOEFL test). I don't know why they use such a hard question. To tell the truth, listening is the most difficult part for me. Thanks to all again, Regards, Phuoc
9. Hello, guys, I've been a bit tied up recently and I am surprised that there are so many new posts that I can not trace which one I've ever read. Here is a new question that I need your help with: Children's ears are able to detect a wide variety of pitches than adults. Many thanks in advance. Phuoc Edit: Typos removed.
10. Dear Erin, First of all, I am terribly sorry if my speaking is somewhat disrespect to your feeling. To be honest, I didn't mean to do it, just my expression is so awful.:):):) In fact, the key for the answer is A; thus, it should be "has long been" and I have a hunch that perhaps, there may be some hiden grammar behind. So I would like you to confirm your answer. In my opinion, it seems that "for to" is similar to "in order to", thus the sentence may read as. Limestone long has been quarried to use as a building stone Is that correct ? I do apologise you again. In our country, Vietnam, it is not serious if a student doubts about his teacher's point. They may dispute then, but never does the teacher think that his student pays disrespect to him. In fact, I usually feel doubtful about my professor's point but he always appreciate my thinking. And I heard that in the US, the relationship between teachers and students is even more equal. Now, I see it may be not true.[V][V][V] Thank you for showing me that my speaking is a bit rude. I will be careful next time. And I guess that if I study in the US it will be very diffcult for me to overcome the gap between the two cultures. Maybe I will be "culture-shocked". Looking forward to hearing from you. Regards Phuoc
11. Dear Erin and Mali, This sentence is ogirinally from a TOEFL book and I do not intend to modify anything. In short, which one do you choose, A or B ? Please be more decisive !!! Assuming that this question appear in the real test and you only have 30 sec to make your decision. I am in doubt about what you said. Looking forward to hearing your sure-enough answers. Phuoc Some stuff edited by Erin to conform to the TestMagic ethos. :)
12. Hi all, Let's see into this question: Limestone long has been quarried for to use as a building stone Phuoc
13. You should not say so. I think it is much better if we are familiar with the topic. As for me, I am extremely happy if the topic on the TOEFL test is the one I have ever written. The list of the topics from ETS reminds me BO DE TUYEN SINH (the list of the entrance university tests issued by the MOET ) for which high school students at my time really cared whether they would appear on the real test. Thanks so much for useful information. Phuoc
14. My dear Erin, I'm a bit confused about your explanation. It's self-contradicted. At first, you mentioned that but later you said inversely I wonder which "the most" implies. "they suffer more than do other people" OR "they suffer more hypertension than other diseases" Am I missing something ? Phuoc
15. It seems that there is a typo in this question. It should be underlined "serve into" not only "into". Note that "bullion" is uncountable noun, so the subject should be singular and the whole corrected sentence thus should be: Gold or silver bullion serves in commerce as mediums of exchange all over the world Just my thought. PHUOC
16. To Fortune, I can't see any link between "the most from hypertension" and "the greatest" as you propose. How much is "the greatest amount of salt" that people eat ? 100 tons That sounds strange. "suffer the most from hypertension" means that "people may suffer from other thing but hypertension is the most".Is that OK ? Regards Phuoc
17. Let me try. 1. D cities->city . To Tho, why we should omit "which is". Is it any grammatically wrong ? 2- B. should be "a part of" What is the key ? Phuoc
18. Agree with you, muaxuan. However, what about 3-D (will suffer) ? Is it wrong ? Why ? Phuoc
19. Hey, Tho, You misunderstand muaxuan. Year here refer to an amount of time (=365 days). Friday refer to a point of time. How can you make this similar ? The last is used to stress that the amount of time has been counted till now. You should not mistake "last year" with "the last year". I have seen it many times, why don't you search in google ? HTH Phuoc
20. Thanks, Fortune. Now, I see this point. E.g. West of Uruguay is Argentina. -> Argentina is in the West of Uruguay. (OK) but West of Uruguay are lands. -> Lands are in the West of Uruguay (??????)[V][V][V] That's why I couldn't agree with Erin that this sentence is in inversion. What about you ? Regards Phuoc
21. To Fortune, We can use both: to earn somebody smth and to earn for somebody smth HTH Regards Phuoc
22. Thanks, muaxuan. To Fortune Even if the sentence should go this way, what makes it different from that I proposed. Do you think that only "west of the Missouri River" are "Vast, open grazing lands, an area that receives less rain than the farming region" ? What about the other areas ??? Just an example to show you that if we apply what Erin said, the sentence like what I post will be OK. I've never seen any adverb used in this way. Have you ? Phuoc
23. To Erin, I couldn't agree with you LESS!!![V][V][V] FIRST, If you says that it is an inversion, then the paraphased sentence will be: Vast, open grazing lands are west of the Missouri River, an area that receives little rain than the farming region. Does it make sense ?????:cool: If it does, therefore we can conclude that there are no other Vast, open grazing lands except "west of the Missouri River". Poor us !!!:(:(:( Another example: My friends are students. and also an "inversion": Students are my friends -> thus, there are no students except my friends. God bless all the universities around the world !!!!:(:(:( SECOND Where is the adverb ???:o:o:o Looking forward to hearing from you, ERIN PHUOC
24. Here is the key: 1- B (banana rule) 2- D (it should be it is of the eye). However, in my opinion, it should be it is that of the eye. (that refers to the work) Hey, Erin, may I omit "that" or not ? Looking forward to hearing from you, Erin . Phuoc
