    Got 50! My opinion.

hi people, really, who lives in Toronto - give me your phone number, I can give some advises. I got my 50 on the first attempt and that was not difficult. In my preparation I used http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/newsenglish/witn/index.shtml try to repeat after narrator in the same pace and intonations. You need 20-30 minuts of practice every day for 1-2 weeks. And a few days of practice with a study partner. there is a preparation course in Toronto for TSE, i know the teacher and she's good. (but I did not use this course). call Basel (he coordinates the classes) at 416-839-3265, he'll answer your questions good luck! and there is NOTHING scary in TSE, imagine you talk to someone over the phone - not a big deal.
  3. My idea why guys from India and Pakistan fail to get 50 - they speak fast, and they accent makes it impossible to understand. People, try not to rush, they don't test how many words in minut you can say. Concentrate on saying it clearly. Good practice is in this site. You try to listen, then read the article aloud trying to keep the same pace and intonations as the speaker. http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/newsenglish/witn/index.shtml and, find a study partner preferably not from your country. Then accents will differ and both of you may give objective feedback.
  4. I completely agree, 10 mg propranolol taken when you start feeling nervous helps. But don't forget to eat a candy, propranolol drops glucose levels. I took it myself before my performance exams and I felt confident after that. I tried xanax a week before exam but it made me sleepy and a bit stupid - propranolol is much better.
  5. I was not as dissapointed by the test center in Toronto as you are. Yes, there were people nearby, but I felt like in a classroom where noboby pays any attention to you. First it was distressing, hearing echoes from the others, but once you hear your qx you start to think and answer, like nobody is around. And I am sure they provide earplugs on request.
  6. I have my test at 10 AM in Toronto I will post qs asap after it (I know many people do it afternoon in North Americas) Best of luck to all of us!
  7. My advise is go to sleep you may take a look on forum before you'll leave to the exam

  15. Hi guys, could you tell me your opinion on this essay? I appreciate any comments. Tnx, Natalia I do not agree with the statement that parents should make important decisions for their older teenage children. Adolescents need for independence must be respected, otherwise he will express negativistic behaviour. The major task of adolescence is to achieve a secure sense of self. It is partly achieved through move from dependency to independency. School experience accelerates and intensifies the degree of separation from the family. Adolescents feel that they live in a world unfamiliar to parents. The most important relationships for an adolescent are peers; the real world is a school. Adolescent see negativism as a way to express their independence. Generation gap between parents and children emerges as parents, who often in their mid-forties, have to deal with the turmoil that accompanies adolescence plus make adjustments to work, marriage and their own parents. Some parents cannot accept the need for increased independence of their teenagers; they want to maintain control of their children. Parents’ pressure may force an adolescent to become rebellious, and even may cause a psychiatric disorder such as depression or anxiety disorder. But most adolescents are receptive to parent’s approval or disapproval. If adolescent feels that he is treated with respect, the generation gap may be bridged successfully. Then, instead of making decision for their child, parents may give reasonable advises and expect that they will be followed. In sum, a respectful attitude toward children and a gentle leading in form of reasonable advises can do more good than auctorial attitude.
  16. Hi people, What do you think of this essay? Many people have a close relationship with their pets. They treat their birds, cats or other animals as members of their family. Whether such relationships are good or bad is a controversial question. First of all, having an animal is a good way to cope with loneliness. Imagine the situation where some lonely old man comes home from work, and no one meets him at the door except for his dog. The dog is the only person who will listen to his grumbling and tolerate man’s mood swings. But looking at the other side of the problem one may see that treating a pet like a family member is very dangerous, as it replaces human relationships. It is not only a way to cope with loneliness but also is an escape from reality and interpersonal conversation. Not pacified by a false sense of having family a bachelor might go out and find his spouse. But he has chosen sitting at home with his pet. Many pet owners don’t have children, pets assuming the role of children’s substitute. A pet is a good object to apply person’s need to care for someone. But too many extreme situations happen now, when people decide to have no children at all. I knew a woman in her thirties who got pregnant and choose an abortion, saying that she already had two children, meaning her two dogs. It was not that she could not afford to have a child, as she and her husband had well-paid jobs. Maybe she did not want to be responsible for a child or she did not want to spoil her figure. But if it was not for her dogs she might have a baby and did not have committed a big sin - abortion. And if she had a baby she would have less chance to end up in a senior home. Therefore, treating a pet as a family member is not so good as it seems. Human-pet relationships are dangerous as they replace human-human relationships and make a defective family model.
  17. Hi everybody, could you take a look at this? "One should never judge a person by appearance. "Although this is a very popular expression I will doubt it. First of all it is that appearance may give useful clues about the person. Psychiatrists do include a description of their patients’ appearance in a medical chart and use it in a diagnostic process. They pay attention to how groomed the patient, is he concerned about appearance or not, how appropriate dress is for season, gender or occasion. Poor grooming may indicate an emotional problem or psychiatric disturbance, as excessive grooming and mannerism may be an indicator of schizophrenia of a personality disorder. Body language is a part of appearance, and it tells a lot to experienced eyes. A slumped posture and a lack of facial expression may indicate depression or a neurological condition as a Parkinson’s disease. Excessive energetic movements or constantly watchful eyes suggest tension, anxiety or a metabolic disorder. Secondly, not only psychiatrist may use appearance’s clues. I personally trust the first impression from new acquaintances. It always confirms later. I believe the most important in a person’s appearance is his face. I note the expression of a person’s face, openness of a face, cleverness of eyes, sincerity of a smile. I do not pay much attention to one’s clothes, as it doesn’t tell much. But even the clothes may bear signs of individuality, as whether it is neat or not, how appropriate it to the situation. Using these clues wisely you may tell who the person is and choose an appropriate tactics toward it. In sum, a careful look on a person may give useful clues about the person.
  18. Dear awhig, Thank you for your time and support. I appreciate it very much.
  19. Could someone rate my essay? Tnx First I would like to discuss the meaning or the word “adult”. I think, being an adult it is not only being 21 years old or more, or having children and family, or ability to make money. Adult person is a mature person, a person who is able to take responsibilities for themselves and for others. It is not a single event or ceremony that makes a person an adult. It is more about a sequence of events. In modern society children start to be responsible in a very young age. In an age of four they start going to school, and this is one of the first events in a way of becoming mature. Children in this age are responsible for many things – they have to prepare homework, come at school in time, clean up their rooms etc. Children grow and their chores are growing in quantity and quality. Many high-school students combine school and work, trying to get some pocket money as well as money for College. They take responsibility for getting good marks in order to be admitted to a college. Working make an adolescent responsible for the results of their work, teaches to co-operate with co-workers and enable them to understand the value of money. A decision to get married and to have children is another important step in becoming a mature person. A person who decides to get married must appreciate difficulties which marriage brings. These difficulties include an additional responsibility towards the spouse and the children. One must work in order to be able to support its family, must spend time with family. One isn’t free anymore to do whatever he/she wants; it must all be coordinated with family needs and plans. In sum, it is not a single event what makes a person an adult. Becoming an adult is a stepwise process.
  20. Personally I do not understand, what do you want to accomplish, a team or sports? It would be better to say: many sports imply a team play Them may refer to sports, but the sentense sounds clumsy

    need essays

Hi everyone, I have attached the file containing essays scored 6 points. The essays are from testmagic.com. I didn't like them much, but you may get some useful ideas. TOPICs.doc
  22. I couldn't get a main idea, as well as the idea of each of your paragraphs. What are you trying to say? Your weak points are prepositions use and refining your ideas. You are not able to use modal verbs and infinitives. My score is 2 of 6
  23. Please rate this Some people prefer to live in a small town; others prefer to live in a big city. Given choice I would prefer to live in a big city. It can be explained by many reasons. First of all is the fact that in a big city businesses are more active and is much easier to find a job. Second reason – one may get better education in a big city, as there are more schools and Colleges. Third reason – is high variety of entertainment in a big city. Fourth reason – there are more hospitals and is much easier access to health professionals. For example, in my home city Zaporozhie is about ten metallurgic plants, two textile, a liquor and two beer-producing plants, one candy fabric, and many small businesses. It is much easier to find a job here than in a small town, where my aunt lives. That town has only one cement-producing plant, and some hardly putting ends together small businesses. People in that town have to drive thirty-fifty kilometers to their work. Talking about education – I believe that in small towns education is substandard. Of course, one may succeed in a small town’s school, but it is very hard, as no teacher wants to move there to teach. The best ones get their job in a city, and only those who cannot find job are forced to work in a town. And in case these teachers find a better place to work they live that town workplace, and town children certainly don’t benefit from it. As colleges usually have high admission criteria, based on high-school standards in their area, it is not easy for town school graduates to enter in a college. Health professionals also tend toward big cities, where are a lot of hospitals, equipped with modern medical apparatus. In a big city a chance to improve professionally is much better, as there are more patients and colleagues who can help in handling a difficult case. Health conferences are usually held in a big city, not in a small town. All what is left for town citizens is family doctor, and in case of surgical emergency they have to drive to a hospital, which may be far away. In conclusion, big city is much better place to live in.
