  1. "No reason to be honest" was the wrong wording. My point is there is no reason to be *completely forthcoming* with your private information, and without lying you should imply as much as possible to every school that you will go there. I came off too strong above (you shouldn't outright lie), but you should not tell the complete truth if it has any marginal chance of hurting you. Unless you're asked very specifically. Don't tell every admissions person directly that their school is your top choice. But it's not dishonest to imply that they are - that's just basic negotiation, par for the course for any job opportunity.
  2. Seems to me that you should imply to every school you are waitlisted at that they are your top choice. I see no reason to be forthcoming, unless you think admissions committees from different schools are communicating about specific applicants (seems highly unlikely). Admissions people may realize this is "cheap talk" but I don't think it would hurt. Having offers or even waitlists from other schools would marginally decrease your likelihood of attending, so I wouldn't mention it unless you can present it in a way that seems to increase your chance of accepting. E.g. "I am waitlisted at X, but even if they accepted me I would still be very interested in Y". Don't lie, but play the game to the extent you can. Once you're in, you're in. EDIT: softened my language.
  3. I'm positive there will be stuff today. Stanford GSB, MIT, and Rutgers are coming in right now. More action at the end of the day as with yesterday I bet as well.
  4. I'm convinced they do this on purpose to torture us...it's like "welcome to the brutality of Econ academia". Just wait until the job market in 5 years loll :blue:
  5. Don't speak too soon! I bet a lot of action comes at the end of the day. And if results ain't coming today, you better bet we'll be getting something tomorrow. Next week is about to light me up as well, for sure. Chins up everyone! We got this.
  6. Could be. Just seems odd that all admits are internationals. Could just be random chance, but it doesn't line up with past years. At least in 2019 and 2018, we see a bunch of admits all on the same day, and a mix of I, U, and A. Then waitlists the next day, and rejections two days later. Also I'm only talking about Minn here.
  7. Same. Could be IR on my end. On the other hand, looks like all Econ (i.e. not AE) acceptances have been internationals. Maybe they're doing them first? Sucks that they can't release all at once...
  8. Anyone have info on the Minnesota admits on GC?
  9. The hero we needed. Thanks friend, and congrats!
  10. Could still be trolls? GC doesn't have any way of screening, I think. I guess you can "report spam" but IDK how they verify that. Someone also posted results for the Ag Econ program (ARE), so could also be ARE people entering things wrong?
  11. Good call - you're right these match up well (seems like March 9th was about the earliest last year). I bet these current posts are trolls. Or could be a couple of people getting in really early (like the Stanford thing). There is still plenty of hope!
  12. New post on GC seems to confirm but could just be a similar troll I guess. Nobody on Urch can confirm? :sorrow:
  13. More fun with more alcohol lol...
  14. I'm somewhat glad to be done with undergrad - no classes or theses to worry about for me! I've just leaned in a bit at work and increased my (outside of work) alcohol consumption by about 50%. Seems to be working fairly well, though the number of times per day I reload GradCafe would seem to contradict that...
  15. Finally got an actual email. I guess this confirms that there is a lag between posting on ApplyWeb and actual emails. I kind of hate this news because it means I'm going to be loading my app pages over and over instead of just checking my email - seems more stressful! Oh well, I'm at least glad to get Stanford (probably the best department I applied to) over with early... Congrats to all who got in!
  16. I didn't receive an email or anything. When I click on "Application Management" there is a link to "Decision Letter" on ApplyWeb. I missed it like twice before seeing it. But for reference my last name is in the first half of the alphabet.
  17. OK, my decision letter is up on ApplyWeb, so it is real.
  18. OK yeah I was convinced the Knight-Hennessy stuff from December was real, but the post from today on GradCafe suggests that admits coming through are the second round of admits, unrelated to Knight-Hennessy. Are you saying those are real too?
  19. Oh also, just heard from a friend that Duke Sanford is sending out interview requests today. Short time line - interview scheduled for within a few days from now.
  20. New post on GradCafe saying that Stanford's second wave has started. Can anyone confirm?
  21. Thanks and sorry, all this waiting apparently makes me write too much!
  22. Based on GradCafe, so far looks like American, Clemson, and Ohio State have gotten back, along with some very early admits from Stanford. For Health Econ people, I've also heard from a friend that Minnesota HRSPA has gotten back to some. Haven't heard about any B-schools getting back (except for the one somewhat dubious interview listed for HBS on GradCafe). That's all I've got for now. The anxiety continues to build!
  23. I have heard of not having Real affecting RA applications even at policy institutions (I know of an example at a prominent DC think tank). Seems like BS (who uses Cauchy sequences doing RA work??), but it was apparently the preference of the fellows to have someone who took higher math. So really I don't think it *should* hurt you, if the world was fair. But it might, depending on the preferences of whoever is hiring.
  24. Don't have personal experience to back this up, but my guess would be that the Master's does not matter assuming you finish the PhD. However, it would be very valuable if, for whatever reason, you end up dropping the PhD. Especially if getting the Master's is only a minor amount of extra work, I would definitely add it. You never know what could happen over the next 4 years. You will greatly regret not getting the Master's if something unforeseen happens and you drop the PhD with nothing to show for it!
  25. You hit on the main reason - I want to do academia. More broadly, I'm just a bit bored with the consulting work and the fairly long promotion time frame. I could stick around at my firm for the next 6 years instead of doing a PhD, but I would end up at the same level as being hired out of PhD, making less, with not much opportunity for advancement after that. Sure, I lose 6 years at 100K+, but I think I would die if I had to spend 6 more years making Excel charts instead of 6 years actually getting smarter, studying things I'm interested in, etc. I'm not obsessed with money - just having a comfortable, interesting, and fulfilling life is good enough for me. As for post-PhD opportunities, I do realize it's very hard to get a good academic job. For that reason, I'm completely OK with a career in industry after PhD. But having a PhD seriously improves your industry options. It gives you a bit of a restart, it increases your starting and max salary, and it allows you to eventually become a testifying expert or something similar eventually. Can't really do that without the degree.
