  1. Folks, The question is how many teams of 2 can be formed from 6 people so that the three topics can be associated to them. Therefore, we dont have to calculate the number of ways in which three topics can be combined with three topics. That being said, the answer is 6C2*4C2=90. Remeber, we can choose from any of the 90 ways to associate the three topics.

Can you please help resolve the following problem: "a,b,c,d,e,f are 6 ppl and we have to make 3 pairs of two ppl each out of these 6 ppl. each pair will be given a seminar on asia or africa or europe , so that each time all three continents are covered. in how many ways it could be done?" How would go about this issue. Different folks have attempted this problem in different ways and I'm quite confused about it. Thanks in advance.
  3. Answer is B on this one because natural gas = oil in all respects at certain conditions. But disparity occurs once something abt the conditions change. Now, E says "Oil distribution is more likely to be affected by severe winter weather than is the distribution of natural gas." which basically means that it is oil that might not remain low in case of severe weather (opposite to what the arguement says). Only B provides support because, "The industrial users who consume most natural gas can quickly and cheaply switch to using oil instead." Till certain conditions permit natural gas will keep up with oil in terms of low prices. Oil will always remain low but NG prices will be affected in severe weather. Becasue if natural gas will rise in price even in mildly inclement weather, than it will not remain low at all. go it?
  4. hi dk, see, none is singular no matter what.Aslo, I feel none cannot be use with a singular subject at all. "none" by its very meaning means "not one". i.e, not one of a bunch. The "bunch", therefore needs to be in plural form. Am i making sense.
  5. sorry to bug you again, I also saw a problem of yours posted a few days ago, it goes as follows: here is a combination question , a sort of i got in the real one. a,b,c,d,e,f are 6 ppl and we have to make 3 pairs of two ppl each out of these 6 ppl. each pair will give seminar on asia or africa or europe , so that each time all three continents are covered. in how many ways it could be done? agonizingly, u did not attach any answer choices to it. my take on it is as follows: mutually exclusive events (like DKpybus said)- Easy part: to makes 3 pairs of 3 from 6 ppl: 6C2 * 4C2 = 90 here is the twist though: now to delgate the three topics to the three (final)groups: 6C2-3 = 12 (3 is for the combo among the three groups) elaborating further: there are 6 entities in all (3 groups and 3 subjects). We need to associate any of the three groups with any of the the three subjects. That being said, we dont want to account for the combination between groups. If you notice there will be 3 combos AB, AC, and BC (A, B, and C being groups). I'm not accounting for BA,CA, and CB (6C2 takes care of that).The remaining 12 groupings will be strictly between groups and subjects. Let me know if the answer is anywhere as close to the right one. This is a different combinatorial problem in that it deals with associating two completely different sets of entitied as opposed to one set. This is my take. Therefore total ways = 90 + 6 =96 I could've have posted this in its appropriate forum since that post was a few days old, i thought there is a better possibility that it will be noticed over here. tsdvj is more than welcome to share his thoughts too.   6. hi again davvy, this problem looks a lot like the one in [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] (ques 260). The answer though is D unless i've misinterpretted your typing. the answer to that prob is D. and the ques is: is ?(sqr.rt (x-5))^2 = 5-X The two choices are 1. -x|x|>0 and 2. 5-X >0. If this is your prob, then hint is from (1), we know that X is negative. I generally use plug in's to solve these problems and briefly looking at the question stem to see if we can use algebra (especially for inequalites). I've also notices that the time is takes to plug in is usually not a whole lot longer than going through the algebra. Ofcourse...i'm not the greatest algebra wizard in the world.
  7. hi davvy, its funny you think I'm a native speaker. I'm every bit an indian as you are. I've been here a while and yes, like all indians, i too feel that i will fare better in quants. But i havent let my guard down. I've done [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] twice over. I completely understand when you say that there is only so much one can do. Anyway, thanks for you advice and keep me posted on how you do in your next attempt. I still have reservations about the 1st question. Later.
  8. 2nd Ques: read through the passage once more- it says that sinease is the cheapest and most effective. so the assumption is that no other medicine that delivers the same end result (sinus relief) is cheaper. answer D states that there is another medicine out there which is cheaper. the catch is the heat-hold trap. Even though it is used for heat-cold medication, it has the same ingredients as sinease and hence can me used to treat sinus at a cheaper cost. Hope that helps. 3rd question: very tricky: the catch is to use POE and get down to 2. (A) In cities that have both a zoo and a pure aquarium, local residents are twice as likely to visit the aquarium as they are to visit the zoo. Local residents : out of scope (only vacationers please) © Over the last ten years, newly constructed pure aquariums have outnumbered newly established zoos by a factor of two to one. Out of scope: doesnt explain the PROPORTION of vacationers (D) People who visit a zoo in a given year are two times more likely to visit a pure aquarium that year than are people who do not visit a zoo. the trap is "two times more likely to visit" this does not mean that vacationers will actually visit pure aqua 2 times nor does it mean that vacationers "WILL VISIT" pure aqua. It just talks about probability. (one of my two options was this) (E) The zoo aquariums of zoos that are in the same city as a pure aquarium tend to be smaller than the aquariums of zoos that have no pure aquarium nearby. Size does not matter. (no pun intended!!) Now to the last option: (B) Virtually all large metropolitan areas have zoos, whereas only a few large metropolitan areas have pure aquariums. Vacationers!!! If there are tons of pure aqua every where (vacationers will visit some city close to their own place of residence, thereby reducing the proportion of vacationers to the city under consideration). Hope this answers your question. Regarding the first question: I guess B is the right choice (one of my two options after POE). D talks about changes to the car- but this does not talk about durability. But what confuses me is that nothing is said about the other car manufacturers!! if there is an explanation out there, let me know. later. Just another point- I dont have much time before my GMAT, taking it on the 23rd. I feel I have done as much as i can given my work load and all. I chanced upon this site just yesterday and there are far too many messages for me to go through. Is there a way you can surmise and give me the gist. I have taken 800 score and PR tests and have been scoring is 710- 730 range on both of these. From what you have gathered, is there any last min advice that you can share with me or specifically point out to any messages that might prove useful. thanks again.
