  1. Congrats!!!!!!!!!! i told u i told u That was a good sign!! U made it~~(I will stay here:mad:) Just relax and wait for other schools. See U tomorrow!
  2. As far as I know both are the same except that U don't need to reapply for the yr 2. To get into Mres/Ph.d. Track 2 you need overall distinction. :grad:
  3. Did u hear anything from UI-U.C.? I know some who got rejected yesterday(via email), but I got nothing. Does it mean I passed 1st round? Anyway, wish you guys many many lucks.
  4. GRE : 640, 800 GPA : 3.9/4.5, Jr.sr GPA: 4.32/4.5 Math(Jr, Sr only): calculus1,2/ Honours AC 1,2/ Honours Linear Algebra/ applied L.A/ diff.eqns/ real analysis(measure)/ graduate level real analysis 1 (measure and functional analysis) / stats1,2 / prob/ mathematical stats/ econometrics1,2/ graduate-level econometrics 1/ Exchange student in canada : a+s more than half MSc. econ in the UK math revision: ranked 8th including mres/phd mock exams: econometrics: ranked 1st among papers class teacher corrected macro: ranked 2nd among papers ... micro: ranked 2nd among papers.... ref: 2 from uk, 1 from my undergrad. sop: revising now schools: econ phd + finance phd in BS + others During 4 months here I did whatever I could do. If I fail this time again, I will not go to the US in my remaining life.
  5. I am so~ curious who u are. :hmm: Guess we met each other already. :D
  6. I think u r a very strong applicant corpfin. And if Probability Theory u've taken is a course based upon measure theory, then undergraduate level real analysis will look like a piece of cake. So dont worry. Adcoms would definitely know that. Go for it. Ck6/// Do u know which canadian business shools r strong in Finance phd? Im thinking of applying to UBC, QUEENS, TORONTO, and so on. Am I right for this info?
  7. For econometric theory, probability theory which is based upon Measure is mandatory. I have studied measure for a year since at the moment I aimed at doing econometrics, but changed my career path to finance which also requires me to have concrete knowledge on it if im doing financial econometrics. Yes, I believe you have to learn as many maths as possible as an undergraduate not only for admission, but also for surviving a helllike procedures in a PH.d. program. Also, you don't want a situation that makes you give up theoretical fields which you really want to do but you think cannot compete for the lack of math training. I think we have to cope with the uncertainty in the future.
  8. "Real Analysis" recommended in Econ is just "intro. mathematical analysis"? Though I know the course title varies for each institition, Im so curious what exactly it means. At UBC, advanced calculus 226,227 also offers quite similar contents and I believe that CK6 might have taken them or equivalent courses already. Is it possible that it means measure theory? I studied "measure theory" through the course titled by "real analysis" BTW, good luck CK6~
  9. Dear TriEcon Yes, I think my LOR and SOP should be remade. LOR was definitely good enough but I think the most important thing in it is who's writing for you. Of course I chose as best profs as I could, but it is possible that they might not be relatively well-known to US adcom. Some profs even confessed that the odds of me getting into the programs I applied for were so small that it would be a miracle if I was admitted into any. UBC math prof helped me but it didn't work. Yeah, I need some big names and that's why I go to London. I already met a big name econometrician before I applied to LSE, who was a prof at Yale. I'd better consult him about this matter. And my SOP was......totally a crap. I cared nothing for it. I get to know that I should take it into consideration this time. Actually I have no idea how to write it. Need some tips for it since I have to finish it before I get to London. Any helps?
  10. Firstly, I really appreciate your sincere comments, onono. Suppose that I target 2007/8, how can I spend the whole one year given to me after finishing MSc.? That is the main problem. Yes, I really dont want to apply for 2006/7 with that burdens. Getting a job? Im so curious what you've done and doing after finishing MSc. econ. If I can get into an I Bank in London or anywhere, then NOTHING to LOSE!!! But Im suspicious that I can make it since Im not an English, nor EU national. I passed US CPA examinations a few years ago, but I think it's almost useless. Im supposed to apply for Finance PHd., not Econ. Different from the viewpoints of TM econ people, we, our nationals, think and have observed that Top Finance Phd. is almost impossible to get in for us. We even say that there's almost no ranking among Finance programs. Actually, those programs have chosen around 4~8(at most) people each year, and these small seats make it more competent than Econ. So just being admitted into one of Top 50 Finance phd. programs is my goal. What do you think about this viewpoint? If that were my goal, do you still think that the fact im currently enrolled in LSE's MSc would not add much weight to my application? My stats at undergrad. are not bad, though I hadn't cared much for study in the first and second years. At a top tier Univ. in my small~~~~home country, gpa(overall) 3.9/4.5 3.7/4.0 gpa(third and fourth yrs) 4.32/4.5 4.0/4.0 including one year of study at UBC in Canada I got half A+ and half A taking maths and econs at UBC. GRE 640/800 Maths and stats (all UG level) Calculus1,2 / (Honours)advanced calculus1,2(UBC) / real analysis(Lebesgue measure) / intro. probability(UBC) / mathematical statistics / (Honours) linear algebra(UBC) / applied linear algebra(UBC) / ordinary differential eqn.(UBC) / and several math-related basic courses in econ and business dpt. /econometrics 1,2 I applied for 2005/2006 half of randomly-chosen Top 20 US econ PHd and failed all. The followings would be added in my 2006/7 application package. Now I can add one semester of grad school in my home country which I just finished before this summer vacation. Micro theory, econometric theory, and real and complex analysis (all graduate-level) Though feeling highly dubious of the effects, I can additionally fill up these to my package. So I concluded that I apply this time again not to Econ but to Finance. Any thoughts? Horrible scheme, huh? :yuck: Thank you in advance. QUOTE=onono]Welcome Lacrimosa2! Here is what I think about PhD application. If you want to get into PhD for the academic year of 2006/2007, I think that the fact that u're currently enrolled in LSE's MSc will not add much weight to your PhD application esp if you're applying to very top economic departments and esp if you have already one pretty good and advance undergrad economic courses. This is because the deadline for those applications will be very early (around Dec/Jan, am I right? not so sure about this!) and you will not get your degree final result by then. This means that it is unlikely that u'll be able to get good recommendations from LSE's professors because they're likely to heavily base their letter of recommendations on your exam performance. Yes, you'll get to do x'mas mock exam on three core subjects (micro, macro, and econometrics). Although it has nothing to do with final result, you can use it to support your PhD application since it is a precursor of the performance in your final exam. However, there are a few problems with this. First, the result come out around mid-december, it might be a bit too late to use the result for PhD application by then. Second, it is hard to perform well on all of the three subjects given that there is such a short period of time for studying for them. Last year, I prepared very well for two subjects and I have no time to left for another one (consequence is that I fail that another one!). Third, although it is a precursor for the performance in the final exam, it is not a good one. In final exam, the material to be examined will be EVERYTHING -- a lot more intense than mock exam. Although there is a lot more time to prepare for it (given that u've planned your study well and finish your dissertation before its deadline so that u'll have time to prepare final exam), the material which one need to cover for final exam will be huge! In short I think it will be hard for you to apply for PhD in the academic year of 2006-2007 due to the above reasons. If you want to try, go for it! -- if you do, I think your undergrad econ training will be counted more relative to the uncompleted courses at LSE. If you want to apply for PhD for the academic year of 2007-2008, you'll certainly be able to use LSE MSc to support ur PhD application. If you perform very well in final exam, it will brighten up your profile a lot since the courses at LSE are very good and well recognized! Lastly... To andyecon, I think LSE is not free on funding. They still struggle to increase funding for their PhD students, not to say MSc (very hard to get for MSc courses -- MSc is actually how the department makes money!). Unless you have done very advanced courses during ur undergrad and have performed exceptionally well, it is unlikely that you'll funded for MSc. I know a few people at the LSE who get full funding at the LSE for MSc, but they're kinda exceptional.
  11. Thank you ONONO!~ It really helps! I am feeling worried about life at LSE. Can you or other guys just give some tips to me who should apply for phd. programs as soon as I get there?
  12. Hi,there.:) As I jotted down on the other thread. Im going to LSE this following term. Since I know there are several past and current LSE guys in TM, I want to ask some questions to some of them, who can see this. Students are also required to attend the Introductory course EC400 Paper Course number and title 1 EC413 Macroeconomics for MSc Students or EC442 Advanced Macroeconomics 2 EC411 Microeconomics for MSc Students or EC441 Advanced Microeconomics 3 EC402 Methods of Economic Investigation or EC443 Advanced Econometrics Notes Only one of the Advanced-level courses (EC441, EC442, EC443) may be taken. Students must obtain the permission of the relevant course proprietor.>>> Q1. Is the last note "Only one of xxx may be taken" seriously regulated? No way to take two or more advanced courses even if I get a permission from Prof???? I knew a guy who got his PHd.in finance at Chicago, who also graduated from LSE, and I was heard that he took all three advanced courses at that time. I guess that it was possible only "at that time" since Mres/Phd program were made recently. I already took micro1,macro1, and econometrics theory in my local univ, so I guess advanced courses would be more helpful for me. Q2. If only one advanced course is allowed, which course would be more appropriate to me who wants to apply for Finance phd.???? Im choosing between mico and econometrics. Thank you in advance. :p
  13. I took advanced calculus 1,2 from Prof. Loewen !!!!! He is really nice~
  14. The former. I got paid monthly payment of US $10  opps, national security
