  1. Hi DestinationUSA, first of all congratulations for the awesome admissions. "2. MIT - Transportation Planning ", I guess it is at ESD (Engineering System Division) department. I have few questions : - How did you receive your admission ? Email or snail mail ?and when ? - Is it for a Phd or a Master (MLOG) ? Thanks. Keep in touch...
  2. Hi g..., and where do you expect to go ? Toronto-Canada ?
  3. Dragonfinity, you are right when you say that those who do not receive any funding are second rate. But, I think that if one really wants to do a PhD in a school, he can work very hard in Master and obtain fellowship for PhD. Thus, RBGuy, just go to the school you like even if you don't have any funding now; just work hard in Master and you will get it. Keep in touch...
  4. Hi Manas, got rejection from Cornel, PhD in Operations Research. I received a snail email 3 weeks ago, it has been sent on the 17 of March. Best of luck.
  5. Hi dudes, does anyone has some informations about MLOG (Master of Engineering in Logistics) at MIT ? - The courses - Is it well ranked among other master in Manufacturing/Supply chain ? - Do you know someone who went there ? - fellowship - Last but not the least, life cost at Boston Thanks a lot. Keep in touch...
  6. Just received MIT's mail. I applied for a PhD in Operations Research, and that is the brief content of their response : " ... We are impressed by your background and qualifications. ...We are unable to admit you for the doctoral program for Fall 2005. We feel your educational aims might be best served if you first complete a master program in logistics. To this end, we suggest two alternatives : - Master ...contact the Executive Director...email - Master ...contact the Executive Director...email ... no application fee, and a decision will be made swiftly. ...a completion of either program will provide you the opportunity to determine if the PHD is right for you...You would be eligible to re-apply for PhD in January 2006. " Hey guys, what does that mean ??? It seems that my 7 years of experience in logistics didn't help me for direct admission to PhD program. I know it is KO for PhD-fall 2005, but for the master, do you think? Is it Ok for Master? I want to be sure, because I must take some important decisions right now concerning my job, private life, etc... I have already sent an email to the Executive director of the first master. Thanks for your help. Keep in touch...
  7. The answer is 3. 1. For x - x^12 goes from +infinity to 0 - 2^x goes from 0 to 1 so the 2 curves must intersect at one point, just use the Newton theorem that helps to find zero point. 2. For 0 - for x = 0, 0^12 = 0 and 2^0=1, so 2^x is above x^12 for x = 0 - for x = 2, 2^12 = 4096 and 2^2=4, so x^12 is above 2^x for x = 2 so the 2 curves must intercept at one point between 0 and 2 3. For x>2, x-> infinity lim 2^x > lim x^12 when x-> infinity (a simple rule says that exponential goes faster to the infinity than any x^n) so the 2 curves must intercept at one point between 2 and the infinity. Definitely the answer is D.Three(3). Keep in touch...
  8. Ok I got it using integral! Just draw a line segment [0, 1] Put the point x between 0 and 1/2 (due to the symetry, we will just get the value for 0 to 1/2, and we will multiply by 2 to get the total). What is the probability that the distance between x and y is less than 1/2 : - If y is at the right of x, we have p(x)*p(y) = dx * 1/2 - If y is at the left of x, we have p(x)*p(y) = dx * x Nowing that : - the probability for x to be at the position x is p(x)=dx, the differential increment - the probability for y to be at the right of x is that y is between x and x+1/2, p(y)=1/2 - the probability for y to be at the left of x is that y is between 0 and x, p(y)=x Thus, the sum is dx * ( x +1/2 ) So the total is I = 2 * Integral [ (x+1/2) * dx], x:0->1/2 I = 3/4 I guess, it is a little bit complex, but I'm use to that kind of integral solutions. 9. Matroid, great, great !!! I will try to do it using integral calculus. Did you take the GRE math test ? Keep in touch...
  10. Hi stanfordian, I just received an email from Management Science. I applied there for a PhD. Unfortunately, the committee did not approve me for admission. They didn't give the reason why they took the decision. I'm a little bit disappointed. Keep in touch...
  11. Hi stanfordian, thanks for the information. I'm a little more confident now. Well, thay said that the last day for the responses is tomorrow. I didn't get a response today so I guess I will get one tomorrow. Anyway, I will keep you informed.
  12. Hi stanfordian, thank you for your help. I applied in Management Science & Engineering, PhD. I didn't get any response from them. I was a little bit nervous, then I sent them an email last friday; they said they were getting decisions in and that I would have a response this week. I heard of 2 people who got their response last week (Tuesday & Thursday), one is wait-listed, the other is refused. Why are they taking so much time to send emails to everybody ? Do you have any idea about the way the admission committee behaves ? Thanks in advance.
  13. Minnie, don't give up !! You will hear better news in the next days/weeks.
  14. Hi shmslee, I applied to Cornell - Operations Research. I sent them an email yesterday and they said that the application committee is still working and they will deliver me a response within 2 weeks. Just send an email to EECS secretary and for sure, you will get a response. Best of luck. Keep in touch...
  15. Hi all, I sent an email to Cornell today because I was a pretty anxious due the fact that I didn't hear anything from them. And they sent me a response, saying that the admissions committee was still in the process of reviewing applications and I should expect a response within about 2 weeks. So I will wait. For those that are waiting responses from schools, just send them an email or call them and you will probably get a response. Keep in touch...
