  1. Hi everybody. Just came from the test center-math 48(87%), verbal 38(85%) overall 690(92%) . I'm surprised that with these individual scores I didn't get more than 690. This is not to say that I'm not satisfied with my score but it seems that ETS values math score more than verbal. My friend's individual scores were 51-math and 33-verbal and he got 690 as well even though 3 points difference in our math scores was more than compensated by 5 points difference in verbal. Now about the test. Math was quite tricky. Lots of DS questions several with statistics and probability. A couple of questions from coordinate geometry. Many questions with long word problems. The level of difficulty rises very quickly and one can expect difficult questions from the very begining. I got bogged down on one question and am sure that all of the answer choices were wrong. That blody question cost me valuable 7-8 minutes. Sometimes difficult questions were followed by very easy ones and I used to panick, but these easy questions most probably were experimental. Verbal was not that hard. Quite easy SC and CR questions. One so called bold face CR but easy as well. I have to confess though that RC was not easy and I got two passages in succession. Overall, verbal was easier than I expected. At the end of the test I thought my verbal would not be more than 34.
  2. Manson is off after 0,4,8,12....evenings pass Kathy is off after 1,7,13,19...evenings pass So if you look carefully, you will see that the sequence in Manson's case is infinite even number of days and in Kathy's case infinite odd number of days. This means that they will not have an evening off together if this pattern continues. Hope that helps.
  3. Please somebody help me. The commission proposed that funding for the park's development, which could be open to the public early next year, is obtained through a local bond issue. (B) that funding for the development of the park, which could be open to the public early next year, be (E) development funding for the park, which could be open to the public early next year, is to be This question is from the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and the correct answer, B is obvious. However, what I can not understand is that in the explanation ETS says that in E which modifies development funding, while in B which modifies the park. Can anyone explain why. I'm really confused.
  4. For simplisity let us denote ladies with umbrella---------------A=60 wearing black shoes-------B=75 having a white handbag---C=85 wearing a ring--------------D=90 There must be at least 60+75-100=35 ladies sharing A and B 60+85-100=45 ladies sharing A and C 60+90-100=50 ladies sharing A and D Similarly 35+45-60=20 ladies sharing A,B and C. Finally 20+50-60=10 ladies sharing A,B,C and D.
  5. I think A is correct because If you choose C, you will have a run on sentence.
  6. Erin Please help........... 1) It is an oversimplified view of cattle raising to say that all one has to do with cattle is leave them alone while they feed themselves, corral them, and to drive them to market when the time is ripe. (A) all one has to do with cattle is leave them alone while they feed themselves, corral them, and to (B) all one has to do with cattle is to leave them alone to feed themselves, to corral them, and © all one has to do with cattle is leave them alone while they feed themselves and then corral them and (D) the only thing that has to be done with cattle is leave them alone while they feed themselves, corral them, and (E) the only thing that has to be done with cattle is to leave them alone while they feed themselves, to corral them, and The correct answer is C. I think that all of them are wrong. One thing that I can not understand is why in the C the verb leave is without to. I thought the correct expression was all one has to do with cattle is to leave……. 2) In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding, in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor. (A) in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics (B) in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers © partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics (D) partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers (E) partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers The correct answer is E. Well, had it been develop rather than acquire I would have guessed. My question is whether it is possible to use the verb acquire in this context---to acquire smth. in smb. 3) Acid rain and snow result from the chemical reactions between industrial emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids. (A) with atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids (B) with atmospheric water vapor producing h igh1y corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids © and atmospheric water vapor which has produced highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids (D) and atmospheric water vapor which have produced sulfuric and nitric acids which are highly corrosive (E) and atmospheric water vapor to produce highly corrosive sulfuric and nitric acids The correct answer is E. Is it correct to say A and B result from smth. to produce smth. 4) Building large new hospitals in the instate area would constitute a wasteful use of resources on the basis of avoidance of duplicated facilities alone. (A) on the basis of avoidance of duplicated facilities alone (B) on the grounds of avoiding duplicated facilities alone © solely in that duplicated facilities should be avoided (D) while the duplication of facilities should be avoided (E) if only because the duplication of facilities should be avoided The correct answer is E. I can not understand what’s wrong with A and B, let alone that E sounds especially awkward. 5) In June of 1989, Princeton Township approved a developer's plan to build 300 houses on a large portion of the 210-acre site of the Battle of Princeton, one of only eight Revolutionary War battlefields that had remained undeveloped. (A) one of only eight Revolutionary War battlefields that had remained undeveloped (B) one of eight of the only Revolutionary War battlefields that have remained undeveloped © one of the only eight undeveloped Revolutionary War battlefields that remains (D) only one of eight Revolutionary War battlefields to remain undeveloped (E) only one of the eight remaining undeveloped Revolutionary War battlefields The correct answer is A. Since approval of the developer’s plan does not immediately make The Battle of Princeton developed, and the rest 7 sites still stay undeveloped, is not past perfect had remained wrong in A? On the other hand, D and E change the meaning of the sentence. 6) Although it claims to delve into political issues, television can be superficial such as when each of the three major networks broadcast exactly the same statement from a political candidate. (A) superficial such as when each of the three major networks (B) superficial, as can sometimes occur if all of the three major networks © superficial if the three major networks all (D) superficial whenever each of the three major networks (E) superficial, as when the three major networks each The correct answer from the answer key is E; but does each in E agrees with broadcast. I think the correct answer is C. 7) Because natural gas is composed mostly of methane, a simple hydrocarbon, vehicles powered by natural gas emit less of certain pollutants than the burning of gasoline or diesel fuel. (A) less of certain pollutants than the burning of gasoline or diesel fuel (B) fewer of certain pollutants than burning gasoline or diesel fuel do © less of certain pollutants than gasoline or diesel fuel (D) fewer of certain pollutants than does burning gasoline or diesel fuel (E) less of certain pollutants than those burning gasoline or diesel fuel The correct answer is E; but are not pollutants countable??? 8)Similar to rising interest rates, consumer and producer prices have been rising. (A) Similar to rising interest rates, consumer and producer prices have been rising. (B) Consumer and producer prices have been rising, as have interest rates. © As interest rates are rising, so have consumer and producer prices. (D) Consumer and producer prices have been rising, like interest rates do. (E) Consumer and producer prices, as interest rates, have been rising. The correct answer is B. Can we omit been rising in as have interest rates? 9) A substance from the licorice plant, 50 times sweeter than surcose, was recently discovered, is not only a natural sweetenerbut also prevents tooth decay. (A) A substance from the licorice plant, 50 times sweeter than surcose, was recently discovered, (B) A substance, which was recently discovered, from the licorice plant, 50 times sweeter than surcose, © A substance from the licorice plant, which was recently discovered to be 50 times sweeter than surcose, (D) A substance from the licorice plant, 50 times sweeter than surcose, which was recently discovered, (E) A recently discovered substance, 50 times sweeter than surcose from the licorice plant, The correct answer is C. I can not understand why which in C refers to A substance and not to the licorice plant, preceding noun.
  7. 1) Although Women's work has changed considerably in the past 200 years, the conditions under which women work have changed little since before the Industrial Revolution: the segregation of jobs by gender, lower pay for women as a group, jobs that require relatively low levels of skill and offer women little opportunity for advancement all persist, while women's household labor remains demanding. A) the segregation of jobs by gender, lower pay for women as a group, jobs that require relatively low levels of skill and offer women little opportunity for advancement all persist, while women's household labor remains demanding. B) the segregation of jobs by gender, lower pay for women as a group, and jobs that require relatively low levels of skill and offer women little opportunity for advancement all persist, while women's household labor remains demanding. C) the segregation of jobs by gender, the lowering of pay for women as a group, and jobs requiring relatively low levels of skill and offering women little opportunity for advancement all persisting while women's household labor remains demanding. D) job segregation by gender, lower pay pay for women as a group, relatively low level skilled jobs offering women little opportunity for advancement all persist, not to mention women's household labor remaining demanding. E) the segregation of jobs by gender, the lower pay for women as a group, the jobs that require low levels of skill with little opportunity for advancement all persist, as well as women's household labor remains demanding. I chose B because of the and in front of jobs that require.... that signals end of the series initiated by the segregation, but the correct answer is A. Am I wrong??? 2) The President of Japan's Nissan Motor Company, Carlos Ghosn, is a globalist with Lebanese heritage, French education, and Brazilian passport, who earned his spurs as an aggressive turnaround artist at Michelin and, later, at Renault. What's wrong with A???
  8. What do you men by two number of 3 squares diagonally ???
  9. B) Rolling a pair of dies we can have 6x6=36 outcomes. Since we are calculating the ways we can lose the game(have no pair of sixs in 25 rolls) we must deduct boxcar, so we have 35 otcomes per roll and 35x35x.......x35(25 times) permutations in 25 rolls. But this solution is valid only if 2/1 and 1/2 are treated as different outcomes. If this is not the case, then we have 20 different desired outcomes per roll and the answer is 20^25. c) Probability that we win the game is 1-Probability that we lose the game. The latter is equal to (35/36)^25 and so the probability that we win the game is 1-(35/36)^25.
  10. b) 35^25 c) 1-(35/36)^25 If you do not understand let me know and I will explain in detail.
  11. Erin, thank you very much indeed. I would say that your explanation gave me much more insight than [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. Thanks again...
  12. Hi Ulviya. There are two ways to solve question 2. 1) The way I did. You find probability that B wins(that means that A looses) and subtruct it from 1(the probability that A wins + the probabilty that B wins). To be honest, however, the question is little bit inacurate since it does not rule out ties. 2) The second way. The probability that A wins the next game is 1/2 but even in case if he does not he still has a chance because the overall score between A and B becomes 2-2. So in order for A to become a winner he should win either the next or after-the-next game. The probability of wining the next game is 1/2 and after-the-next game 1/2x1/2=1/4. If we sum up 1/2+1/4=3/4 note that this way is little longer.
