Hi, Even though this post maynot be apt in this section, i thought i can get some help here. I have an interview date on Jun 17th. My I-20 will be dispatched only on 13th or 14th june and hence I wont be able to make it to the visa interview which is on Jun 17th. My friend asked me to take her slot on 7th july. But after I cancelled her appnt her slot never showed free. I kept checking for about an hour from 3.AM to 4 AM but it never showed "A"(available). I just dont know how this damn system works. I guess that slot is taken now. Anybody knows anything about when the slots are shown available or knows anybody who wants to exchange/cancel their appnt, please contact me. My visa appnt will be in chennai Any advice/tips are solicited Diablo

It depends on the number of courses you take. Usually you have to finish around 30-35 Credit hours for the whole MS program. With this information, you can calculate how much you will have to end up spending. You spend = 7020 * 2- 30 * 260

How many TMians are going to Columbia University?? Please respond
-
Job prospects are good I guess.
-
Work Ex does give you an advantage. However, I dont think writing GRE would be a good Idea. Rather publishing a few good papers may make all the difference.
-
Agreed. 100%. Even then you get 6 month benefit. In other colleges 2 years.
-
Surprising!!!

I thought I had aid at UFL- G. The confusion is clear now. No aid there. So back to square one. @Meeraj: The cost per credit hr at Columbia is 1000$ which is not very high. The living expenses are high which can be managed by oncampus Jobs. Moreover, its a 1 year course, you will be earning quickly so money shouldnt be a major issue.

I have heard that UIC has a very good aid scene
-
I dont know how you could take their scores as a benchmark for getting admission. I would suggest applying to atleast 5 - 6 universities.
-
My admits are all in CS from these univs SUNY SB Columbia UFL NCSU SUNY BUFFALO UTD UMBC (Tuition waiver + TA)
-
I dont think you have go higher on GRE Score. You have to go higher on the number of school you apply to :D I dont know what position you were in ? But having applied to only ONE school beats me!!
-
My choice goes below TAMU - Cheaper + good location for Jobs. NCSU - Best of the universities listed above. I am not interested in ECE

Columbia isn't my favorite choice right now becuase of the following reasons. 1) Its bang in New York, so finding a decent appartment , getting used to New york life etc could effect my grad life. I can call it a major distraction. 2) Its expensive and the campus is very small :D 3) I have heard that there are great opportunities at CU atleast in terms of job prospects...but the university I am considering also supposedly has good job prospects(SUNY SB).

I got dinged at UMN TC. I had called them up and found out around 2 weeks back :(
-
I guess it depends on whether you take up a financial Job or Tech Job. I know a person who has completed Masters in CS at columbia and whose starting salary was more that 90K$. She was inducted into a financial company.
-
What makes you say that??
-
If you get a much better score aid chances will improve. If at all you want aid badly apply to those schools which are not greatly ranked but have a lot of funding. I can see that you have good academic profile

I guess i was not clear the first time. Here I go again... Will the I-20 Form contain the expenses for 2nd year as per what I mentioned in the Certifcate of financial capability? I was told that I-20 will only contain expenses of first year. Is it true? --Diablo

In an I-20, will the expenses be mentioned for 1 year or both the years? Will I run into trouble if I show lot of money for 2nd years fees? i.e Do i have to show the same amount of money for 2nd year during the VISA interview?? --Diablo

Do you have to take courses that are related to your intended area of specialisation or can you take courses at random? How does this affect a person's chances of getting RA ? I had mentioned in my SOP that my interests are in networks and theory of computation(Algorithms in particular). I am wondering how i can strike a balance between the two or if I have to let go one of them? :hmm: --Diablo
