  1. Thanks arjmen and scoot for those encouraging words . After I did some analysis about my failure in the test, I realized the Math was not that tough and I screwed up the questions numbered 1, 4, 7 in the first 10 questions. :mad: I am planning to take it the test again very soon with a right frame of mind. WIll you keep you posted. Pen
  2. Folks, First of all I would like to thank each and every member not to speak of Erin for maintaining such a wonderful site , Kudos to you Erin. [clap] :tup: Very disappointing day for me. Just came back from the test with 540 in the pocket. I would like to share my experince while it is fresh in memory ( I guess it is going to stick with me for sometime ). I haven't participated very actively in this forum except popping my head once in a while. First time I scheduled my test on Apr 21st, as luck would have it, the computers crashed during my essay question. ETS made that test null and void. I rescheduled for today May 27th. Preparation: Kapan CD and Practice Q hit Ratio : 80% Verbal 80% Scores: 580, 590, 620, 620 Princeton 1,2 and 3 : 590, 640 and 690 Powerprep 1,2 : 590 , 660 ( I took the tests as diagnostic with 0% prep) Actual GMAT : Math 33 and Verbal 30 pathetic My obervation: Math is way way more difficult than the OG's hardest questions. The Data Sufficiency questions are very long with very convuluted words and it took me a while to understand the questions. 3 questions I just could not understand and moved on with a blind guess, I gave-in to ETS's game. From then on I started seeing easy questions and whenever I got a hard question , I just could not understand especially the DS involving word problems. My hit ratio in [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] last 100 questions was 83/100 with some really silly mistakes , but the ones in Real Test yukkkk!!!. :eek: , The irony is that I fiinished the Q with 16 minutes to spare, so go figure, Either I screwed up the math completely or I just could not handle the toughies. I tried to spend time in understanding the question, but found myself going in circles. Guys, please dont take [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] as the bible for Quant, you will get screwed once you come into the radar of tough questions. I was quite surprised that I got 4 probability [ one conditional prob ] and 3 perms and combs questions, not too tough. Number Properties : 8 Prob and perms-combs : 8 Geometry : 3 Word problems : 4 I dont remember the rest. Now Verbal, for this consider [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] as bible. The questions are of the same difficulty. I got 2 bold face which weren't that difficult. 3 complete the passage ( CRs ) and 5 monster SCs ( not too difficult but, ate up my time ). RCs were straight forward except 1 out 4 , started at question# 32. Science Passage with 75 lines , that I could not make head and tail and I guessed 2 of the 3 and moved on. What made me feel the heat in verbal was this: 1. Monster SCs with whole sentence underlined on more than one occasion 2. 2 or 3 very challenging CRs 3. 80% of the my RCs are inference questions , yes I do remember since those are ones I felt I was answering all the time. After my Math fiasco, I could not focus on verbal and was desperate to finish the test and get out and get drunk. I do not mean to discourage you in any way but, be strong mentally when you go out there on G-day. I was very confident of my problem solving, but I hate ETS for framing questions that I could not understand. Arjmen : Can you please point me to any resource where I get to solve some tough quant problems ?? I have seen you post some interesting questions. Folks, I need to get my hands on more CATs, if you can suggest a place I can get quality CATs, I would like to buy them Thanks and Good luck with your test. Again be mentally strong and dont give up in the middle.
  3. As usual he_hels and arjmen nailed it [clap] . The reason I posted the question is , in general, Given N trials and asked for the probability of exactly R occurence of an event with the given probability of an event occuring. N(prob)R = NcR* p^R * (1-p)^(N-R), Binomial Distribution
  4. the number n*(n+2) will be divisible is 3 if either n is divisible by 3 or n+2 is divisible by 3. Required Prob = P(n divisible by 3) + p( n+2 divisible by 3) P(n divisible by 3) = 33/99 since there 33 multiples of 3 p( n+2 divisible by 3) = 33/99 why n can only take 1, 4, 7 , 10 etc. Using AP 97 = 1 + (n-1) 3 --> n = 33 Therefore req probabilty = 2/3 :rolleyes:
  5. The probability that it rains in NewYork City is 0.8, what is the probabilty that it rains exactly 5 days in a period of 7 days in that City :(
  6. I assume there is no repetition of flowers of same color. If that is the case, we have an arrangement problem with n things n! hence 6
  7. We have A,B and C points in XY plane. To find the area of the triangle with these as vertices, 1. Complete the points to form a rectangle consisting of 3 right triangles and 1 triangle whose area we need to compute. 2. Since we formed a rectangle, it is very easy to compute the aread of it. Comes to 44 length 11 and witdth 4 3. Compute the individual areas of the right triangles. They are 11, 14 and 4 therefore the area of the required triangle is 44-29 = 15 cheers:rolleyes:
  8. A - > gives the impression that the attacks are dated and biased . The correct Answer should be B
  9. folks, I apologize for the delay in posting the OA. It is D. Twinsplitter, can you please explain the answer thanks murthy
  10. 1. Corporations will soon be required to report to the government whether they have the necessary reserves to pay the pension benefits earned by their employees and that the information be published in annual reports to shareholders. (A) earned by their employees and that the information be published (B) that their employees earned and that the information be published © that was earned by their employees with the information being published (D) earned by their employees, information that must also be published (E) earned by their employees and published the information
  11. 1. Climatic shifts are so gradual as to be indistinguishable at first from ordinary fluctuations in the weather. (A) so gradual as to be indistinguishable (B) so gradual they can be indistinguishable © so gradual that they are unable to be distinguished (D) gradual enough not to be distinguishable (E) gradual enough so that one cannot distinguish them there are so idioms here so ..that and so as to be Can someone throw some light ??
  12. f© = c^2 + bc + b = 0, given C St1: b(b-4) = 0 means either b= 0 or b= 4 consider b =0 , C^2 = 0 mean c=0 given that c consider b = 4, C^2+4c+4 = 0 -> c = -2 St2: b> 0 insuf since you can multiple -ve values for C Hence Answer is A
  13. If m and n are both 2 digit numbers, and m-n= 11x, is x an integer? 1)the tens digit and the units digit of m are same 2)m+n is a multiple of 11 First of all, m and n are integers according to the given data since individual digits in m and are 2 digit numbers and both are not 0. St1: m can be 11, 22, 33 etc and 11-n = 11x n can be any 2 digit number not necessarily a multiple of 11 so Insuf St2: m+n =11--> take m = 10 and n = 12 m+n is a multiple of 11 but m-n = 2. take m = 11 and n = 22 m+n is a multiple of 11 and m-n is also a multiple of 11 therefore Insuf St1 and St2 : m and n can only take multiples of 11 hence m-n is a multiple of 11x means x-> integer cheers
  14. Yup the OA is 3/8. The key is not to consider having exactly 2 girls after you took care of having exactly 2 boys case.
  15. A Family wants have to 4 children. What is the probability that they will have exactly 2 boys or exactl 2 girls ?
  16. Twin, You did not fail me man, I have been expecting to see a great score from you since I started participating in the forum, You are a verbal Guru, please share some pointers on cracking the verbal :rolleyes:
  17. The rest of the sentence says the something has been unsuccessful. It is not logical to say that the amendment has been unsuccessful. The process of ratification has been unsuccessful. I agree with dwivedys
  18. IMO, A is wrong because of "their". Car owners who inflate their tires properly inflate should refer to car's tyres, not owner's tyres. B is the correct answer
  19. Thanks Goel_ar, huh, one more concept to practice :(
  20. A bin of computer disks contain a supply of disks from 4 different manufacturers. In how many ways can you choose 6 disks from the bin? Ans is 10. Any explanations to this problem ?
  21. Yet another way is the area is computed in 2 ways 1/2* PR* QS(=5) = 1/2* PQ(=3)* PS(=4) Get PR as 12/5;)
  22. magicwand, The way I do it just square both sides to get rid of the +ve and -ve equations. In this case (x+1)^2 = 4(x-1)^2 and solve for x you get x = 1/3 or 3. Now if the problem is a DS, then depending on st1 and st2 adjust the answer
  23. I was confused about the verb agreement. IT says "one of the substances" that tell or tells ???Again the answer with tells are all wrong for known reasons.
  24. I go with B. According to B, there is only one point on the X-axis that forms a right angle with lets say A(2,3). This thrird point is nothing but a perpendicular from A(2,3) onto X-axis so that the y coordinate is 0 and should be equal to 2,0 Hence B:blush: My Bad, the other possiblility as greyCellz says is having 90 degrees at A. Even then the third point is (x, 0) and the triangle being right triangle. A^2+b^2 = C^2 we can find x. Hence the Area. Alright we have 2 areas :eek:
  25. The idiomatic usage of require is different from require of. For example I require you to practice SC very thoroughly. Notice the "to" Now, require of is more like noun form of require which is requirement. For instance "Candian province of Ontario requires of both public and private employers" if you need to form a question what is it gonna be. What is the requirement of the public and private employers ?? The answer follows as: The requirement is "that" the employers pay .... am making sense ?? :(
