  1. Hey Swadeep, Excellent score man....Best of Luck for ur Apps......
  2. Hi everyone, First of all I would like to thank Erin for creating such a wonderful forum and all those people who have kept the forum alive with their wonderful posts. I must say this forum was a great help to me in my preparation, although I am just a touch dissapointed for I was targeting a score of 730+.:( I am a final year Mechanical Engineering student in IIT Kharagpur and plan to apply after 2-3 yrs of work experience.I gave the exam because the score will be valid for 5 yrs and therefore I can concentrate on other aspects of my application in the future....I hope I have taken the right path. My prep material consisted of the OG,Thomson Arco Study material ,1000 SC and Spidey's notes( amazing ).I got hold of the OG when I was in the last week of my prep.My advice for all the aspirants would be to get hold of the OG ....It is the best. I prepared for around 2 months....had to balance my prep with my course program.... Verbal was the portion which I was a bit vulnerable...Quant never posed any problems for me and all I had to do was to avoid making any silly mistakes. My Practice scores: Thomson Arco Test 1 : 710 Thomson Arco Test 2 : 690 Thomson Arco Test 3 : 690 Thomson Arco Test 4 : 750 PowerPrep 1 : 760 (I had been thru the OG by this time ) PowerPrep 2 : 710 In the actual test the AWA topics pretty simple although I should wait for the scores:D.I tried to make maximum use of the breaks and relieve the tension. In the end ,the ETS survey was quite irritating. The administrator advised me to keep on pressing "NEXT"....I was a bit nervous before the last NEXT but the 720 score defused the tension...... Lets see what is there for me in the future.....My campus placements start next sem....hope to get a kick start for the journey to my dream school:)
  3. Agree with Krish....Actually We use "when" not "while" to talk abt something taht occurs at the same time as an event/action of a longer duration. Therefore since the marriage is an event taking place while bill's tours( longer event) were on...therefore when shud be used
  4. Choice between B & C......I choose C
  5. Hi Ketcon, i am not that good at sc but i guess i have an idea..... (E). even if they are able to afford household appliances which would have been a miracle to their grandparents. ©. even if they can afford household appliances their grandparents would have found miraculous i think the word miraculous is used here as an adjective to describe the "household appliances"....therefore i think miraculous makes a better choice than "been a miracle" for that purpose..... I hope i am right:idea:
  6. “This past winter, 200 students from Waymarsh State College traveled to the state capitol building to protest against proposed cuts in funding for various state college programs. The other 12,000 Waymarsh students evidently weren’t so concerned about their education: they either stayed on campus or left for winter break. Since the group who did not protest is far more numerous, it is more representative of the state’s college students than are the protesters. Therefore the state legislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students.” The author here presents an argument that assumes that non participation of majority of students in the protests following the fund cuts is an indication that the ones who are not protesting are not concerned about their education and since the section of students protesting is a very small number, the legislature need not pay heed to the protests. The argument makes a couple of baseless assumptions that need to be pointed out. The first assumption that the ones who are not protesting are not concerned about their education is completely flawed. Students who have stayed back or left for winter break might be having valid reasons to do so.Students have a number of assignments, projects , part time jobs and internships to pursue and it might not be possible for them to neglect those activities and join active protests. Besides some sudents might have been contemplating other means of protest ,which they believed would be more effective than protests. Students are like common people when it comes to participating in protests. Some tend to give their own work more priority, some weish to sit back and observe the protests and some choose to remain inactive not because they are not concerned but because they cannot do it. Another reason for the majority of students to stay back and not participate might be that the impact resulting out of the fund cuts might not be grave enough to trouble the students. Another faulty assumption is that the students protesting do not represent the state’s college students because they are very few in number. The conclusion reached by the author on the basis of the avove mentioned assumption is that since majority of the students are not paricipating the section of students leading the protests can be ignored. The author might have not considered the fact these students may be the elected or selected representatives of the college for this particular purpose and thus need to be treated with proper respect and not shoved away just because they do not have the numbers to back them up. The author needs to modify the basic assumptions on the basis of which the original argument has been constructed. The perspective needs to be changed in order to accommodate the students’ view pont as well and not judge them merely by the number of representatives.
  7. Hi All, Could u please rate my esay and comment on it. The following appeared in an announcement issued by the publisher of The Mercury, a weekly newspaper. “Since a competing lower-priced newspaper, The Bugle, was started five years ago, The Mercury’s circulation has declined by 10,000 readers. The best way to get more people to read The Mercury is to reduce its price below that of The Bugle, at least until circulation increases to former levels. The increased circulation of The Mercury will attract more businesses to buy advertising space in the paper.” In the announcement the publisher attributes the decline in the sales of The mercury to the advent of a lower priced competitor The Bugle. The argument has a couple of faulty assumptions and conclusions. Firstly this assumption is not very convincing because Newspapers are a cheap medium of news distribution and presence of lower priced competitors seldom has an adverse effect on the sales of a particular brand. There might be other aspects to this argument which have not been presented like the quality and the content of the presentation. The bugle might be scoring over The mercury by the virtue of it being a more attractive material. For example in Kolkata The Statesman which had been once the premier news paper brand is today languishing with a handful of customers. It failed to evolve and adapt in the face of the competition and despite being one of the cheapest news papers around has vanished into oblivion. However in order to proceed further we may assume that the price factor might be the most and important factor in determining the market share. In that case the solution that has been presented seems to be of a stop-gap kind of arrangement. The newspaper intends to drop its price below that of the bugle until the market share is wrested back. The assumption that an increased circulation will attract more advertisements is not entirely flawed but not concrete either because the advertisements rates in the mercury might not be attractive enough. Therefore without analysing this factor it is inappropriate to make assumptions. Secondly the abstract fails to propose a long term solution for the problem and instead ends up proposing a solution on implementation of which the The newspaper might end up losing more than gaining. In conclusion therefore the statement could modify its line of reasoning and a bit more introspective data could be used to propose a solution.
  8. “The common notion that workers are generally apathetic about management issues is false, or at least outdated: a recently published survey indicates that 79 percent of the nearly 1,200 workers who responded to survey questionnaires expressed a high level of interest in the topics of corporate restructuring and redesign of benefits programs.” The argument here tries to falsify the notion that workers are generally apathetic to management issues by presenting results from a survey that shows that 79% out of 1200 workers showed keen interest in the topics of corporate restructuring and redesign of benefits programs. The argument here is not entirely convincing because of a few faults. Firstly the notion itself can be challenged because it is not the case everywhere.Companies where the management and the workers have regular problems, every managemnet decision is carefully observed because every decision might directly affect the interests of the workers. In companies where such friction is not present the level of mistrust is quite low but still the workers maintain a quiet observation of the management and its activities.. Secondly the survey questionnaire focussed on topics like corporate restructuring and redesign of benefits programs. These topics are the most eagerly follwed topics in any organisation because the outcome of these issues have a direct bearing on the job prospects of the people involved with the company. Thus I feel that the above argument is poorly construced and not supplied with enough evidence to support the claim itself leave alone the conclusion.
