  1. Hello everyone, I took the toefl yesterdey and my score range is 213-270. I need to get 250 or above. I would be very happy if you could tell me how much I should get from the writing section.. Thank you in advance
  2. the official answer is D. (the one that's written in the answer key of a real gmat) I had found this question from one of the gmat paper tests. I think that ETS doesn't like the usage of "like" very much, "treat as" is the correct form.
  3. Before I started studying, I tried to identify the areas where I felt I did badly during my first attempt. In the verbal side, I thought that the area that I could improve myself the most was sentence correction. In my opinion, CR and RC are also areas that one can improve himself but not as greatly are SC. So, I went through OG and SC of gmat paper tests very carefully. In this forum and on wikigrammar.com, almost every question has been discussed, so I just made quick searches to find the relevant threads. and they were very very helpful. For CR, I just practiced more questions... For quant, I did nothing special, my weakness was in DS and word problems. I re-solved the difficullt problems in OG and kaplan800.
  4. hello everyone !! Today, I finished the test and I am happy with my score. exactly one month ago, I took the test and got 580. I had studied a lot.. finished the OG, kaplan, princeton, etc.... so, I was really disillusioned, after one week in misery, I decided to take the test again. So, this time I focused on verbal, especially sentence correction because in the first test, I had confronted many sentence correction questions one after the other in the beginning, which I think lowered my score. right now,I am so tired that I just don't know what to say :) I want to thank all the members of this forum whose posts helped me a lot. And also, thank you Erin !!, because reading your posts on this site and on wikigrammar.com and all the other material that you wrote on grammar really helped me improve my score. I also want to write about the test. A funny thing happened in the AWA part, my topic for the "analysis of an issue " part was actully the same as the one in my first test. I don't know if this is a common thing or not but I couldn't believe it during the test. The quant was actually easier than the quant part of my first test. Very very easy probability questions.... In the verbal part, in the beginning I had 7 sentence correction questions one after the other, then a very tough reading comp passage which I did pretty badly, the rest I just don't remember :) I know my score is quite low among the scores that we see here, but still with a 100 points improvement, I am more optimistic in my applications.
  5. A,B,D are wrong because of incorrect tense usage --- expressed and "are being stunted" in the sentence, there is a cause and effect relationship : because of the current hostility about...., smokers frequently express anxiety so in C, "when" does not imply this meaning : it means only when people refer to the current hostility, smokers express anxiety... D is parallel--- "referring" refers to smokers and it hase a cause and effect relationship.
  6. a very similar question was discussed in this thread : http://www.www.urch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1496&highlight=fanatics+regard+as+self-+patriots+eager+die which basically says : however ruthless the countermeasures= however ruthless the countermeasures are IMO, C is wrong because of inversion

  8. I think for most of the time "X is at least as strong as Y" will be more prevalent. Both of them are correct so, you will see only one of them
  9. for parallel construction X is at least as strong as Y is OR X is at least as strong as Y the sentence is like this : .... favored a clean act (which is) at least as strong as the present act (is) "at least as strong a Clean Air Act as is" in C, "at least as strong" modifies "favored" and also it is not constructed well
  10. I went through the absolute phrase notes, but I guess still it is not very clear for me.. in the "child care" question : 1.Child care already a solid part of the employee benefits package at many companies, more businesses are focusing on a newer family benefit known as elder care, servicing for older dependents. (A) Child care (B) With child care © Child care as (D) Being the Child care was(B) (E) With child care’s being the answer was B, what is the difference? images/buttons/quote.gif
  11. 1. Machines replacing human labor, there was wide anticipation that the workweek would continue to become shorter. (A) Machines replacing human labor, there was wide anticipation that (B) When machines replaced human labor, there was wide anticipation © As machines replaced human labor, it was widely anticipated that (D) Insofar as machines replaced human labor, it was widely anticipated(C) (E) Human labor being replaced by machines, there was wide anticipation that C is the answer my question is if we added "with" to the beginning of A (with machines replacing human labor...), would it be also correct?
  12. thank you for the explanation but still I have some doubts I read the explanation on this site about absolute phrases and it seems to me that the blue part in A is also an absolute phrase (http://www.testmagic.com/grammar/explanations/phrases/absolute-phrases-introduction.asp) so, by adding "with", the meaning changes I guess.. I didn't understand the diference in meaning between A and B?
