  1. Sorry for being late!! Here is my debrief.... I am from engineering background, so quantitive was quite natural to me. Therefore didn’t put much effort on quantitive- practiced from OG (10th and 11th), Kaplan and Princeton. However occasionally gone through the posts in Testmagic forum. Verbal was real pain- particularly the time management in verbal section. Therefore put all my energy for verbal section. I gone through Erin’s posts in Testmagic and Sentence Correction (Erin’s other site) and Vreddy’s posts in Sentence Correction, and prepared my own notes on finer points of GMAT sentence correction. For practice, I downloaded 1000 SC , 1000 CR and 1000 RC and gone through the questions in timed condition. For SC and CR, at a time I used to take 25 questions for each and for RCs, 4 passages.. My self allotted time for 25 SC and 25 CR questions was 60 min and for 4 RC passages was 40 min. Initially strike rate was very poor- around 60% but gradually it improved. During weekend I took full length test from Kaplan, Princeton, 800 Score and Powerpreep. I divided 75 minutes block in 4 segments and checked my position after every 10th question. I strictly maintained this schedule – Minute left-------------------------Question reached 58 min ------------------------------11 th 40 min ------------------------------21 st 20 min-------------------------------31 st – this way in balance 20 min I could attempt rest 11 questions in much relaxed condition. This time management really helped me in real GMAT. I am a slow reader and my last RC passage in the real test was of 110 lines. That mammoth RC came when I was at 34th question. This extra time in last lap helped me keep cool and finish the test 1.5 min. before the schedule. Another thing I want to mention that I always used Hard pencil at the time of practice or test, I felt that writing with pen naturally makes my concentration but writing with pencil irritates me. But as the test centers provide Hard pencil, I practiced with pencil and gradually became habituated with it. That really helped me. I am happy with my score and now busy with my application process. Happy New Year and All the best to future GMAT aspirants. Please keep the forum alive. It is a great effort of Erin and other active members.
  2. At present I am out of my country and extremely busy with my official work. But definitely will post my de-brief within few days. Please bear with me. BEST OF LUCK TO ALL GMAT ASPIRANTS!!!!
  3. Ultimately finished my GMAT - got 730 ! Thanks Erin and all the Testmagicians
  4. Bob, OG explanation is not clear to me. Why OG says Illogical and awkward construction attempts to make merges the second verb of restrictive clause parallel to powers and does not split; punctuation makes clear this seperate action cannot be the case?
  5. OG-11th Edition Question-62 Thanks! It is clear now
  6. As I said earlier- A is not correct . This question is from OG. So we can't doubt the answer key. In my original post I explained OG logic. Erin/800Bob please help!
  7. A 1972 agreement between Canada and the United States reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump into the Great Lakes. A) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities had been allowed to dump B) reduced the phosphate amount that municipalities had been dumping C) reduces the phosphate amount that municipalities have been allowed to dump D) reduced the amount of phosphates that municipalities are allowed to dump E) reduces the amount of phosphates allowed for dumping by municipalities Why A is wrong? Why can't this sentence be read as - 1972 agreement reduced the amount, the dumping amount which was allowed prior to 1972 agreement. What I mean to say - e.g. before 1972 , allowable quantity for dumping was X, 1972 agreement reduced this amount. OG says D is correct - Since the dumping continues into the present, the past perfect verb had been allowed should instead be the present are allowed I think D changes meaning. How one can assume that dumping still continues- there could be another agreement, which might have banned phosphate dumping altogether.
  8. According to some analysts, the gains in the stock market reflect growing confidence that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come in for a "soft landing", followed by a gradual increase in business activity. A) that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come B) in the economy to avoid the recession, what many feared earlier in the year, rather to come C) in the economy's ability to avoid the recession, something earlier in the year many had feared, and instead to come D) in the economy to avoid the recession many were fearing earlier in the year, and rather to come E) that the economy will avoid the recession that was feared earlier this year by many, with it instead comming I don't have any problem of selecting correct answer by POE, but I was wandering about the use of past perfect. What is the grammer point of using past perfect in the clause that many had feared earlier in the year, when simple past may serve the purpose? Is it correct to use past perfect in this situation because there is nothing to show the order of events? BTW A is correct answer.
  9. Pedigreed dogs, including those officially classified as working dogs, must conform to standards set by organizations that issue pedigrees. Those standards generally specify the physical appearance necessary for a dog to be recognized as belonging to a breed but stipulate nothing about other genetic traits, such as those that enable breeds originally developed as working dogs to perform the work for which they were developed. Since dog breeders try to maintain only those traits specified by pedigree organizations, and traits that breeders do not try to maintain risk being lost, certain traits like herding ability risk being lost among pedigreed dogs. Therefore, pedigree organizations should set standards requiring working ability in pedigreed dogs classified as working dogs. The phrase “certain traits like herding ability risk being lost among pedigreed dogs” serves which one of the following functions in the argument? (A) It is a claim on which the argument depends but for which no support is given. (B) It is a subsidiary conclusion used in support of the main conclusion. © It acknowledges a possible objection to the proposal put forth in the argument. (D) It summarizes the position that the argument as a whole is directed toward discrediting. (E) It provides evidence necessary to support a claim stated earlier in the argument
  10. Sorry I misread the question.... A is the evidence which will support to ESTABLISH Monroe's conclusion. So Monroe's conclusion is suppoted by the incident presented in A Had the question been- which of the following evidence will provide strongest support for Monroe's conclusion, then A would have been correct. B is the further application of Monroe's conclusion. In the question stem it is stated that Monroe's conclusion is correct (however much falacious it may be). We should not chalange Monroe's conclusion. We should consider Monroe's conclusion is correct. The question stem asked for an incident which can be supported by Monroe's conclusion, assuming that Monroe's conclusion is correct. Therefore B is correct
  11. Monroe's interpretation : ONLY hot pepers is responsible for his sickness. He ignores the possibility that the sickness can also be caused by his poor appetite. How the effect of poor appetite is refuted in B? Suppose two independent facts, A and B, are present , and the result, C , happens: we are not sure what causes C. But when A is present but B is absent, and C happens we can coclude that A is the contrubuting cause for the happening of C. With this understanding I am not ure how B is the right answer!!!!
  12. Monroe, despite his generally poor appetite, thoroughly enjoyed the three meals he ate at the Tip-Top Restaurant, but, unfortunately, after each meal he became ill. The first time he ate an extra-large sausage pizza with a side order of hot pepper; the second time he took full advantage of the all-you-can-eat fried shrimp and hot peppers special; and the third time he had two of Tip-Top’s giant meatball sandwiches with hot peppers. Since the only food all three meals had in common was the hot peppers. Monroe concludes that it is solely due to Tip-Top’s hot peppers that he became ill. If both Monroe’s conclusion and the evidence on which he bases it are correct, they would provide the strongest support for which one of the following? (A) Monroe can eat any of Tip-Top’s daily all-you-can-eat specials without becoming ill as long as the special does not include the hot peppers. (B) If, at his third meal at Tip-Top, Monroe had chosen to eat the baked chicken with hot peppers, he would have become ill after that meal. © If the next time Monroe eats one of Tip-Top’s extra-large sausage pizzas he does not have a side order of hot peppers, he will not become ill after his meal. (D) Before eating Tip-Top’s fried shrimp with hot peppers special, Monroe had eaten fried shrimp without suffering any ill effects. (E) The only place Monroe has eaten hot peppers has been at Tip-Top.
  13. OA is A I initially choose B. I had tough time to negate B. Then I found B is a very close restatement of the argument If screening tests are performed, then a person CAN receive the appropriate preventive treatment. Choice B is saying almost thing. Therefore A is correct. I don't know what I'll do in real GMAT with this type of question
  14. OA is E I have a doubt. The argument says: The fungicide of 10% concentarion is adequate to eliminate milddew. At the same time it will not cause any harm to the plant. So this is the optimum concentarion. However, a higher concentration fungicide may eliminate milddew more effectively (may be less frequent application of fungicide is required), but at the same time it may harm the plant. So effectiveness of concentration may dependent on concentraion. How E is relevant to the argument?
  15. OA is A. Though I selected A, I didn't have solid reason to eliminate E, except the word "only" in E. Those selected A, please provide insight
  16. Certain experimental fungicide causes no harm to garden plants, though only if it is diluted at least to ten parts water to one part fungicide. Moreover, this fungicide is known to be so effective against powdery mildew that it has the capacity to eliminate it completely from rose plants. Thus this fungicide, as long as it is sufficiently diluted, provides a means of eliminating powdery mildew from rose plants that involves no risk of harming the plants. Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends? (A) There is not an alternative method, besides application of this fungicide, for eliminating powdery mildew from rose plants without harming the plants. (B) When the fungicide is sufficiently diluted, it does not present any risk of harm to people, animals, or beneficial insects. © Powdery mildew is the only fungal infection that affects rose plants. (D) If a fungicide is to be effective against powdery mildew on rose plants, it must eliminate the powdery mildew completely. (E) The effectiveness of the fungicide does not depend on its being more concentrated than one part in ten parts of water
  17. There are tests to detect some of the rare genetic flaws that increase the likelihood of certain diseases. If these tests are performed, then a person with a rare genetic flaw that is detected can receive the appropriate preventive treatment. Since it costs the health-care system less to prevent a disease than to treat it after it has occurred, widespread genetic screening will reduce the overall cost of health care. The argument assumes which one of the following? (A) The cost of treating patients who would, in the absence of screening, develop diseases that are linked to rare genetic flaws would be more than the combined costs of widespread screening and preventive treatment. (B) Most diseases linked to rare genetic flaws are preventable. © The resources allocated by hospitals to the treatment of persons with diseases linked to genetic flaws will increase once screening is widely available. (D) Even if the genetic tests are performed, many people whose rare genetic flaws are detected will develop diseases linked to the flaws as a consequence of not receiving the appropriate preventive treatment. (E) If preventive treatment is given to patients with rare genetic flaws, additional funds will be available for treating the more common diseases.
  18. Since Mayor Drabble always repays her political debts as soon as possible, she will almost certainly appoint Lee to be the new head of the arts commission. Lee has wanted that job for a long time, and Drabble owes Lee a lot for his support in the last election. Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends? (A) Mayor Drabble has no political debt that is both of longer standing than the one she owes to Lee and could as suitably be repaid by an appointment to be the new head of the arts commission. (B) There is no one to whom Mayor Drabble owes a greater political debt for support in the last election than the political debt she owes to Lee. © Lee is the only person to whom Mayor Drabble owes a political debt who would be willing to accept an appointment from her as the new head of the arts commission. (D) Whether Lee is qualified to head the arts commission is irrelevant to Mayor Drabble’s decision. (E) The only way that Mayor Drabble can adequately repay her political debt to Lee is by appointing him to head the arts commission.
  19. I am sorry. My response was for Q-2
  20. For Q-2:What's wrong in B? B is Absolute Phrase
  21. IMO E is also grmatically correct. However as per SAE, it is prefferable not to use optional intransitive main verb "do" as a pro-form after the auxiliary. Therefore D is prefered
